Someone has got to build a fire in him..He can play much better than he did tonight..We need him to be at the top of his game. Would make a huge difference this year.

TexomaRazorback

I think I know someone with initials Mike Anderson than knows how to build a fire.

RockChalkJayhawk

This wasn't his type of game.  Although he didn't play poorly, he will play much better against teams that play more of a classic half-court offense. FAMU plays like a YMCA team, wild, out of control, taking bad shots.  They are awful.

Mickelson had a couple nice passes out of the low-post double.  Missed a few lay-ins that he probably should have dunked, and he needs to rebound better, but overall there wasn't that much available to him this evening.

I am anxious to see how he plays in these next few upcoming games because the Hogs will definitely need him to step up.

daprospecta

He doesn't have that dog in him yet.  Marc Gasol reminds me of a somewhat finesse player with fight.  He has to get that fight but for me it just turned on one day at practice(going up against Jason Peters and Shawn Andrews everyday will do that to you).  It may be tomorrow or it may be next year but when it turns on, there usually isn't an off button.

I am always ready for Hog Ball!

The football season has no bearing on my excitement for basketball season to begin.

I know I'm in the minority, but I rank Hog basketball above Hog football every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Has a lot to do with the era in which I grew up, but for me personally there is just nothing better than watching the Hogs run up and down the court!
Woo Pig Sooiee!  Can't wait for the season to tip off.  I'm hoping for a much more competitive team this season.

Danny J

I love Hunter but he has to learn to dunk when close. He misses at least 2 close shots a game that should be dunked. He could add 4 points a game if he would just go up strong and slam it. I sit right behind/beside the bench and the frustration tonight especially was very visible. He is getting down on himself and someone needs to take the time to coach him up. He is getting better on D. He is not out of position quite as much as he was last year. I think he will continue to get better.

Mickleson is soft like a puffed marshmallow. Hopefully he gets a mean steak in him.

I don't think he's soft at all.  He's just slow-twitch, which has made him foul-prone from being out of position and given the way the Hogs play, he's always behind the pace of the game.  He's THE slow guy on a fast team.

He's the one guy who doesn't fit this style of play.  In fact, I was a bit surprised when he still came here after Pel was fired, given Anderson's teams style of play.

That said, I still see him showing improvement.  I know he is a good kid and I know he works hard and gives you everything he has.  There are just going to be certain nights where he will be more effective, particularly nights where he has better match-ups that he did tonight.  But I do agree with those who indicate he needs to do a better job of rebounding, making outlet passes, and starting the break.

It's not gonna happen!  He is who he is and all the hoping, wishing, excusing and wanting will not change his DNA!  He's soft, timid and non-aggressive.  As I said before the season started, he is a spot player at best.  The sooner everyone comes to terms with that, the less disappointed you will be.  I can guarantee that he will not be encouraged to stay after this season.

Dogtown Donkey

He just does not have that big man mentality on offense. He does on defense because he loves to block shots in the paint, but he's more of a face-up from 15 feet guy on offense. That's just who he is.

To me what would have been a very nice pairing is Alandise Harris + Mickelson. That would have allowed Mickelson to be the face up high post, and Harris would have been the low block player and nice compliment to Mickelson. As of right now, we don't have a true low block post-up player eligible to play (Powell is the closest we have, but even he is not a true low block player) and that's where we'll struggle this season.
Hoping the Hogs basketball fortunes change for the better this season.

You may be right, but I do hate admitting it. I was really hoping he could change his game some and toughen up down low.

I know one thing, if he wants a shot at the NBA he's going to have to mix it up a little. I likened him to a Dirk Nowitzki type player but it's not quite turning out that way.

HotlantaHog

Players DO get better over the course of four years. I wouldn't give up on him being a great player over time.

Hawgphish

Soft, slow twitch, slow....all means the same.

Players find the "eye of the tiger" in the off season by dedicating to the sport.  There is no reason that we don't see evidence of the weight room on him and others.

I see what you're saying, but isn't it a shame, with Mickelson's size, that he is the one standing around outside and the 6'5 guy is banging down low? It's hard to understand why he just doesn't get inside and do something!

labb

On offense, I think that Hunter just needs to get mad at the rim when he is under the goal. Tear the thing down. Quit the mansy pansy stuff and just dunk the ball.  He is much better at 15' that he is at 3'. No more chill pills. Get mad. Get intense. Be a force. He can do this.

YES!

poloprince

I sense a transfer in his future if he doesn't pick it up his rebounding and his ability to make bunnies in front of the rim.

The Great Hogsby

As big as he is the ball should never go below his waist when he gets it down low. He should try to rip the goal down every time he's down there.

Soft, very soft.

...is soft. I hope he develops toughness while at the UA. There is no need for him to put the ball on the floor when he catches it down low. Just slam dat!!!

Hunter needs to go to a Big Man camp or 2 next summer & stay there until practice starts. That's the only way we will see a difference in his game. His game is more suited for a small forward than a Center/Power forward type. He has no back to the basket game what-so-ever but if you put him 15 feet out then he looks awhole lot better. But on this team he never will be out there enough to be effective. SO instead of going back to Jonesboro eating up mama's food trying to pick up weight he needs to apply for as many big man camps as possible to fully utilize his size like he haven't done yet.

RazorAg

Hunter is an aggressive player; he just doesn't look aggressive when he makes an offensive attempt.  Why?  Feet and balance.  He actually has pretty good feet and balance for a 6'10 player, but the problem is when he presses and tries to make a move and absorb contact, he goes on skates.  It's not unlike what Rickey would do last year when drove to the rim.  Watch him closely guys.  He's often off balance.  Some of this has to do with lower body strength and some of this has to do with experience executing down low.

The other thing that is showing up early this year is weak hands.

Dominicanhog

7 pts.. 3 rebs..1.3 blks in 16 minutes, getting better every game, more confortable..  I see 3 years of upside.

Smithian

I don't think people understand Hunter Mickelson's style. He was recruited as a skilled, offense first center who was better suited on the perimeter than down low. The guy so far has lived up to expectations and looks a little better this year. We're getting the player that Kansas, Baylor, Kentucky, and others also recruited. The only surprise may be his shot blocking.

The idea he doesn't work hard, should transfer, etc is very misguided. I guess people were expecting him to be Marc Gasol or Kendrick Perkins, but that isn't Hunter Mickelson.

I think this will be the 1001 time I've said that Hunter has the tools, the coordination and the intensity....he  just needs to lock himself in the film room, get about 3 hours of post moves and footwork as done by Kevin McHale, 1985 Boston Celtics and then slowly employ these moves into Hunter's own game....he'd be a monster

ad: Hunter already has the most difficult part of McHale's game down, that 15 foot fall away jumper....now if he can get the up and under move down, its lights out

The only problem with HM is that some fans are just expecting too much from him. He is only a sophomore and will be a kid that slowly develops over time. He will play a valuable role on this team this year and for the next couple of years. From reading posts seems people are disappointed that the kid isn't playing like a lottery pick. He was never that kind of talent coming in.

ErieHog

He's a sophomore that holds the freshman record for shot blocking,  having passed Oliver Miller last season while averaging better than 2 blocks a game, and holds the Razorback record for consecutive games with a block to start a career.

Let's not pretend like he's a total and utter project.  He's a work in progress who holds multiple program records.     The offense and rebounds will come.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

It's there. Just appears sporadically.  Saw it last year on the spin move dunk. Blocking is there. He took power dribbles and backed down the defender in this last game a few times. First time we've seen that. It's coming, he patient. He will be very good next year and his sr year. He wants it.

Questions...how can you all constantly complain about lack of rebounding (constatnly blaming Anderson) while excusing the fact that the tallest person on team doesn't?
How can you complain about lack of inside scoring, yet praise the "outside touch" of the team's tallest player while dismissing his propensity for blowing point-blank shots?

MA should start calling him "tip-toe" ...his version of playing above the rim.  He doesn't really seem to jump.  I really like Hunter but am wondering if maybe he would do better at a lighter weight since he seems to be more of a finesse player as opposed to power.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!

The Razorbacks, along with Kansas, Baylor, Kentucky, and others, didn't offer Hunter Mickelson with the hope he'd come in and be a big time rebounder and back to the basket scorer. Everyone knew the player he was.
