I've not spend any substantial time in Zurich, but I've twice done a day trip.

For 1 day, honestly I would just start somewhere like Parade Square then just walk around and explore the city, especially around the lake.


There are some tourist attractions that some people flock to I guess, but Zurich, and even more so Lucerne are very walkable cities and when I was there the thing I enjoyed most was just walking the streets.

If you're with the wife/kids, they may enjoy stopping at Cafe Conditorei, excellent pastries and even better hot chocolate.

thanks guys, ended up getting a hotel within walking distance of the main train station and then just walked along the river through the old part of town, hit Gross Munster and Frau Munster, ate in one of the local pubs with some awesome Schwartz Bier, the train ride from Zurich into Garmisch absolutely stunning BTW..
