Alabama picked up its sixth commitment for the Class of 2014 this week when Houston, Texas linebacker Zach Whitley pledged his commitment to the Crimson Tide during a Skype call with Alabama head coach Nick Saban, according to multiple reports.

Whitley, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker from North Shore High School, is rated a four-star prospect by ESPN, Rivals.com and 247Sports and is rated the nation's No. 5 inside linebacker prospect according to the 247Composite rankings.

Whitley chose the Tide over offers from Texas, Texas A&M, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame and others

"Their graduation rates for the last three years have been very high," Whitley told ...

5-11, 190 Newton County ATH Jamoral Graham became State's second verbal in the '14 class.

Graham is ranked as the third best player in the '14 class by 247Composite and a four-star.

Offensively as a junior Graham rushed for 495 yards and six touchdowns, and he had 24 receptions for 464 yards and five more scores. He totaled 21 tackles, one interception and seven pass break-ups in the secondary.

"I feel comfortable on either side," said Graham. "It really doesn't matter to me. I do enjoy receiver more, and I love having the ball in my hands.

"You get the ball more on offense and don't touch it much on defense. But it doesn't really matter where I play at Mississippi State."

"I am just working out this summer, and I am only going to Mississippi State's camp," said Graham. "I am shutting down my recruiting, and that feels good not to have any pressure going into my senior year."

MSU's first 2014 commitment was Memphis Westwood athlete Nikia Cathey.

St. Paul 4-star linebacker Tre Williams committed to Auburn over Alabama...

"I went to Auburn because that's a whole family from the coaches to the fans to the players," Williams said during an interview on the Afternoon Sports Drive on WNSP in Mobile Wednesday afternoon.

"A lot of people say that Bama has a lot of linebackers, but I really don't look at (it like that) because either way I have to work hard for my spot. I have nothing guaranteed. If I would've committed to Bama, I really don't care who is playing in front of me or who's there, I'm still going to work hard for a spot."

Williams also said he was told that he would play as an inside linebacker at Auburn, but that could change "on how much bigger" he gets. "I could play the middle or Will or even the Star position."

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/05/auburn_commit_tre_williams_say.html

The depth at Bama is apparently not being lost on recruits though Williams did stay with "The Family Line".

Auburn gets verbal from Moncrief

Two days after landing the top prospect in the Mobile area in St. Paul's linebacker Tre Williams, Auburn reportedly got another commitment from the Gulf Coast area on Friday. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College safety Derrick Moncrief committed to the Tigers on Friday.

Moncrief, who also had offers from Oklahoma State and Kentucky, said Auburn "just felt like home."

"They make sure you get your grades," he said. "The facilities are just amazing. I just want to be a part of the championship run they're going to be on."

Moncrief (6-3, 226) was a three-star prospect coming out of Prattville in 2012, and is now considered a four-star prospect by 247 Sports, which ranked him as the top junior-college safety in the country.

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/05/auburn_gets_commitment_from_ju_1.html

Moncrief noted that he is trying to get his Community College teammate WR D'haquille Williams, to come be "part of the fam".

Williams is 247's No. 1 Juco prospect in our nation.

Tiger fans have been anxiously waiting for LSU to make a strong move on the nation's No. 1 junior college wide receiver D'haquille Williams and on Friday evening they got their wish in more ways than one.

Williams, a 6-foot-3, 213-pounder out of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, had an extensive conversation with LSU running backs coach/recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson and the end result was the five-star wide out giving Wilson and Les Miles his verbal commitment.

Saban: not all Alabama scholarship offers are committable

Bama's scholarship offers at some positions, most notably quarterback, are non-committable and pending an evaluation at summer camp.

QuoteBama has non-committable "offers" out to two Georgia high school quarterbacks, Gainesville's Deshaun Watson (committed to Clemson) and Pierce County's Tyler Harris.

"It is our philosophy at certain positions that we really like to learn a lot about players and one of the best ways to learn about a player is when they come and visit you, because you're limited in terms of the contact you can have with them off-campus," Saban told al.com.

"To get some of them to come here in the summer I think is a really big tool in evaluation as well as an opportunity to get to know guys, to see if they have the right character and attitude to fit in your program."

Elijah Hood, five-star running back from Charlotte Catholic, who committed to Notre Dame in April, tweeted a vine on Tuesday night of a letter marked with the Alabama logo being flushed down a toilet.

"Dang," a voice says, "Nick Saban hooked your boy up. Roll Toilet."

Hood, of course, isn't the only high school kid who's ever jabbed at rivals or said something he might later regret on Twitter. Former Auburn signee Zeke Pike sparred openly with Alabama fans after committing to the Tigers in 2011.

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/06/heres_one_prospect_who_doesnt.html

None of the big three listed Hood as having an offer from Bama. The report states that the envelope was hand written (no word if multi-colored caligraphy was used).

Hood also dropped a big one on the SEC school's graduation rates in some Twitter exchanges: "The sound of getting crushed by bama's what? Failing grad rate for African Americans? ..."

http://www.ajc.com/weblogs/college-recruiting/2013/jun/04/5-star-flushes-alabama-letters-down-toilet-twitter

Hood has apparently deleted his on-line video (perhaps on inspiration from Gordon Gee)

Sometimes the stars just don't align. So it was with the Class of 2011 in the state of Alabama.

A glance at the Press-Register's final Elite 18 list from 2011 shows that five of the top six prospects in the state that year are either no longer with the teams that signed them or are, in the case of Alabama's Marvin Shinn, expected to transfer before this fall.

The announcement last week that Auburn linebacker Chris Landrum plans to transfer to Jacksonville State brings the number of departed or departing players off the 2011 Elite 18 to six - seven if you add former Auburn defensive lineman Devaunte Sigler, who just missed the list.

Contrast that with the fact that only five players on the 2011 Elite 18 are expected to start or contribute significantly in 2013 to the programs that signed them.

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/06/numbers_dwindling_from_state_o.html

With off field and performance issues, signing stars is only one step.

Georgia a second 'home' for Auburn as it ramps up recruiting efforts under Malzahn

Quote"We're always going to be home first (in Alabama), and Georgia, with us being so close to the line, we really consider Georgia home as well," Auburn's tight ends coach Fountain said. "Coach (Gus) Malzahn's focus this year is he wanted to get things right in our own home state and of course Georgia, that's going to be our main care. We'll do some recruiting outside of that but that's going to be our main focus."

Auburn is making strides in its quest to "get  [stuff]  right" inside Alabama, where the Tigers have picked up four commitments from the recruiting hotbed inside and near Mobile, an area usually dominated by Alabama since Nick Saban's arrival in 2007. Auburn receivers coach Dameyune Craig, a Mobile native, is the man responsible for the Tigers' success in the area under Malzahn.

Eight of Auburn's nine commitments are from the states of Alabama and Georgia. Fourteen of Auburn's 34 "top targets" hail from Georgia, according to 247sports.com. Twelve of the players have four-star ratings or better.
