Three seasons. Three losing seasons.

Trottsky

I think it was about 10 years. He had a couple of players who needed reeling in. That apparently led to a sour relationship with a new AD looking to make his mark.

Fired him a year too early (provided he wouldn't have had a good season next season.).  He had an experienced team coming back to go a long with some good incoming recruits (which included the 2nd best High School player in the State of Mississippi).  I wouldn't be surprised if they now lose all of those incoming recruits.

The AD apparently was feeling a lot of heat.

The aspect that should be kept in mind about Ray is that he inherited a colossal mess left by Stansbury.  The internal culture of their program was terrible, and Ray had that problem to deal with from the get-go.  Also, it should be kept in mind that during Ray's 1st season, for some of the season, Ray only had 7 available players (the starting 5 and 2 players on the bench).  One of the 2 bench players was a walk-on.

HOGINTENNESSEE

Not sure if I believe he is good coach or not, but I'm not sure anyone could have turned that program around in 3 years with the issues that he inherited.

Ray is from the Gene Keady coaching tree.  Keady is probably ticked off at MSU for not giving Ray enough time.

Ray is a smart guy.  He has a Degree in Applied Mathematics and Secondary Education.  He was an Actuary before he decided to get into coaching.  He left his Actuary job and he became a coach and a teacher at a High School in Iowa.

Ray will be better off getting away from the cesspool that is MSU.

Were we recruiting any of the guys that signed their LOI there? Surely a few of them will ask to be let out of their LOI, and their request should be granted......

As far as the MSU job goes; they'll probably hire some mid-major guy. It's an average job.

AD must read message boards.

Don't know if we were but that Weatherspoon kid sounds like a very good replacement for Qualls (if he should leave).

Honest question what do you think is a better job Mississippi State or Alabama?
State has been a better basketball school but Bama can pay more.

Mississippi State made an obvious mistake hiring a guy with limited major conference coaching experience and no head coaching experience.  I knew from the start Ray would be a colossal fail, but he did inherit a mess.  I can't say I see State hiring someone that will turn this around...and Stansbury was the best thing the program had going for them.

I really can't find a reason to put one above the other. They're both equally average, IMO. Both of them play in old arenas, both have had about the same amount of NCAAT success. Sure Alabama pays more, but it's still a school that doesn't care much about basketball...

I think barring any major problems, a basketball coach should be given 4 years minimally.

I know a guy who's daughter played athletics at miss st. He said stansbury was so crooked it wasn't even funny. And it was pretty well-known down there. With him now being at a&m and seeing the talent they're bringing in, I tend to believe my buddy even more.

True. Although I think it would be easier to get State fans to care about basketball than it would be Bama fans. Going to be interesting to see the level of hire both schools make. Auburn hired Bruce Pearl so anything can happen in a coaching hire.

It's Bama and I disagree wth State being the better Basketball program Bama has a lot more tourney appearances and more sweet 16's. Great players like McDyess, Sprewell and Horry.

However State does have a final 4 that Bama doesn't.

Auburn had just opened up a brand new basketball arena though. Coleman and The Hump are 2 of the 3 worst arenas in the league, by far. So neither school has shown that type of commitment yet, even though you can get some pretty good athletes at both schools.

A very slight edge to Bama, just because of the resources involved.

Real simple, they don't have the $300,000 to fire him. He has one year left on his contract, and they can't afford to buy him out.

Didn't think he would actually get things turned around, but to fire him after 3 years in a complete rebuild is a bit hasty. Hell, the guy won 6 conference games and had a veteran group coming back.

Kenny Payne, Cal's assistant at Kentucky, should be their top target. He is a Mississippi native. Was a great player at Louisville in the 80s.
