Jeff Gordon: Anderson aims high with Mizzou recruiting

College basketball is a talent business. New Missouri coach Kim Anderson gets this — as his initial moves indicate.

QuoteTim Fuller's earlier career zig-zagged a bit, but he hit the recruiting trail for real at Louisville under Rick Pitino.

Thanks largely to Fuller's arrive in Columbia, Mizzou expanded its recruiting range back into Quin Snyder territory.

Keeping Fuller on staff was a huge plus. His presence helped the program to stay on course despite the head coaching change.

This week's addition of Huntington Prep coach Rob Fulford appears to be another positive move for Mizzou. Fulford made Huntington Prep into one of the country's better finishing schools (sic) for Division I prospects.

Anderson kept key 2014 recruits JaKeenan Gant and Namon Wright on board and set high targets for 2015 and beyond.

Also compliments Anderson for retaining top assistant Brad Loos.

Great story on @CoachAndersonMU by @vgregorian in today's @KCStar http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/vahe-gregorian/article635530.html ...

QuoteTwo months into it, Kim Anderson still marvels at this: He's the head coach of the University of Missouri's men's basketball team.

This was the one thing he forever had wanted. It also was the one thing he had reconciled, or at least compartmentalized, that he'd never have.

"Life-long."

July is recruiting season for Anderson -  http://www.columbiatribune.com/sports/mu_basketball/july-is-recruiting-season-for-anderson/article_2e9f53e2-8dd3-55bb-8f15-cfa4c9ebc5b9.html ...

QuoteKim Anderson was scheduled to touch down in Atlanta on Wednesday with plans to remain in and around Georgia through the weekend.

Missouri's new basketball coach won't have time to take in any sights, except from his car window as he drives to gyms in Suwanee or Duluth or as far away as North Augusta, South Carolina.

Today marks the start of the second of three NCAA-mandated July evaluation periods, during which college coaches lay eyes on prep prospects who are competing against each other in showcase events.

Georgia — and just across the border in South Carolina — is the epicenter of the action over these five days with the Nike EYBL Peach Jam, one of grassroots basketball's premier events, taking place in North Augusta and the Under Armour Association Finals being held in Suwanee.

"I haven't had the opportunity to see as much as maybe some other guys, some other head coaches, so I think that's a critical facet of it — me being able to watch them and evaluate them," he said.

He didn't scout the same caliber of prospects or attend the same events the past 12 years while coaching at Division II Central Missouri. Previously, Anderson's trips were about evaluating which players could help him win but weren't so good that they would wind up in Division I.

QuoteMissouri basketball assistant coaches Brad Loos and Rob Fulford will each make $160,000 in their new positions under first-year head coach Kim Anderson...

Neither Loos nor Fulford will work under length-of-term contracts, said Robert Schwartz, the university's custodian of records. Loos previously coached under Anderson at Central Missouri. Fulford was the head coach at Huntington Prep in Huntington, W.Va., before he joined Mizzou's staff this summer.

Associate head coach Tim Fuller, a holdover from former coach Frank Haith's staff, does not have a new contract listed on Mizzou's athletics website, but he has received a significant raise: Fuller's salary increases from $270,000 under his former contract to $325,000...

Anderson's five-year contract will pay him a guaranteed salary of $1.1 million and can reach $2.45 million if he hits all his incentives in his first year on the job.

Haith was set to make $1.75 million at MU next season. He agreed to a seven-year deal at Tulsa worth a reported $1.85 million per year.

Anderson's contract, released in June, pays a base salary of $300,000, plus four guaranteed clauses of $173,000 each, designated deals for apparel, TV and radio appearances and public relations responsibilities...

Kim Anderson pleased with summer progress, freshmen class

QuoteAnderson is particularly excited about a bumper crop of freshmen.

"All of them stood out in different ways," Anderson said. "I thought Jakeenan really got better. With him, just having the opportunity to come play against this level of competition every day was important. He improved.

"Namon improved. He shot the ball pretty well. We had to play him at the point for a while just because of personnel, but I think that helped him become a better ballplayer."

Gill-Caesar, who played for new assistant coach Rob Fulford at Huntington Prep in West Virginia, reclassified from the 2016 recruiting class and might emerge as Missouri's best wing next season.

"He's a good basketball player, and the thing about Teki is that he's a solid player," Anderson said. "I think he can shoot the ball, he handles the ball, he passes the ball. He's a basketball player as opposed to being a one-dimensional guy. He's a multi-dimensional guy. He can rebound. He's got decent size. I was thrilled to have him come, and I think he'll have an impact on our team."

Isabell, who arrived on campus in late July, proved to be even better than anticipated.

"When Tramaine got here — he's been a point guard, and he is a point guard — but the thing that impressed me was he shot the ball really well," Anderson said. "He's a guy that, if you're going to play multiple point guards, he can shoot the ball well."

Meanwhile, Allen's hustle and his desire to play defense caught Anderson's eye.

"D'Angelo impressed with his activity, his energy," Anderson said. "We've got to find a position. He's kind of a 3/4."

Anderson isn't allowed to discuss players he hasn't signed While he surely was disappointed when Columbia Hickman guard Jimmy Whitt chose Arkansas over Missouri on Tuesday, Anderson sees a bright future.

#Mizzou students try out for walk-on spot with Tigers - Columbia Daily Tribune http://www.columbiatribune.com/sports/mu_basketball/mu-students-try-out-for-walk-on-spot-with-tigers/article_5a8e84a3-70c6-536b-a967-84bf5cafd8e4.html ...

QuoteEleven students — among the best MU's Student Recreation Complex has to offer — had completed all the requisite paperwork in advance and showed up Wednesday evening to give it their best shot, hoping they could do enough to catch the attention of someone on the staff who could give them a the opportunity to win a place on the Tigers' roster.

"I think what you look for at first is, 'Can this person help us in practice?' " Director of basketball operations Bryan Tibaldi said. "It's hard to say, 'Oh, that kid can help us win a game,' but can he help us in practice? Can he push our guys? Can he take instruction and do what's asked of him?

"You want your walk-ons to pick up on things quickly, help your practices run smoother."

Tibaldi was a walk-on at Michigan State, though his preferred status allowed him an opportunity to win a roster spot without having to go through a one-shot tryout such as Wednesday's.

Strauss: Mizzou team is a work in progress

QuoteIt's a matter of record that this is a transitional season for hoops in CoMo. First-year coach Kim Anderson is still tinkering with his rotation, still looking for a shred of offensive consistency, still wondering what a reasonable expectation is for a team that gave 121 of Saturday's 200 minutes to freshmen and sophomores.

Sophomore forward Johnathan Williams III averaged 5.8 points per game last season, which makes him the Tigers' leading returning scorer. Not surprisingly, offense is not the Tigers' specialty.

Following a 5-5 start that includes Saturday's 74-58 loss at Mizzou Arena [to Xavier], it's fair to say Anderson continues to search for what might make this team special, if not now, at some point before the next presidential election.

Style points are in short supply here. These Tigers can assume nothing. We already know they're unpredictable enough to lose a season opener at home to UMKC. As with most inexperienced teams, it should look better in February and March, better yet next season.

That said, the present can get downright sketchy...

QuoteMissouri fans have had a hard time watching. It's hard to accept the decline in a program that less than three years ago entered the NCAA Tournament fresh off a Big 12 Tournament championship and with a top-five national ranking.

The Tigers' hard fall happened as multiple recruits didn't perform up to expectations over the past two seasons. Eight players have left with eligibility remaining within two years of their arrival. Those facts lead to questions about the ability of former Coach Frank Haith and his assistants to evaluate, attract, retain and develop talent.

In the wake of all those departures there have been significant holes in the foundation of the MU program, which is suffering from a dearth of experience.

Anderson has few proven performers to depend on as he takes on the daunting task of trying to rebuild the Tigers into regular NCAA Tournament participants vying for a place among the upper echelon of the Southeastern Conference...

Anderson said Montaque Gill-Caesar's struggles are related to extra attention. "He's doing fine. He's just got to settle down."

Anderson said "We have to become more vertical team. We have to get the ball to the hole more, and that'ill create shots for other people."

#Mizzou has 111 assists and 153 turnovers this season. Anderson said he doesn't think he's had a team that's had a minus-42 differential.

Anderson just missed crossing paths with Oklahoma State Coach Travis Ford, who played in 1989-90 at #Mizzou. Anderson was at Baylor.

Anderson said #Mizzou continues to be a bad practice team and that has to improve. "Sometimes it takes a while to jump start guys."

Auburn beats #Mizzou 85-79 at Auburn Arena despite 21 points from Shamburger, 16 from Clark, 12 from Isabell. Both teams 1-1 in SEC play.

Kim Anderson said #Mizzou's Montaque Gill-Caesar's health is improving, but he still didn't sound optimistic about him playing Tues at UK.

Anderson said Cinmeon Bowers' ability to keep on the glass, get his own misses and eventually score was big. He had 20 points, 14 rebounds.

Auburn defended Johnathan Williams III as well as anyone has since December arrived. He had nine points, eight rebounds, five turnovers.

Jerry Tipton: First-year Missouri Coach Kim Anderson turns 60 on May 12. With Social Security looming, he did not see the window of opportunity remaining open to become a Division I coach.

"I thought it was closed," he said at SEC Media Days in October. "No doubt. I didn't think I'd get this opportunity."

Anderson, who played for Missouri in the mid-1970s, had coached for Central Missouri the previous 12 seasons (career record of 274-94). He led the Mules to the 2014 Division II national championship.

Then last spring, Missouri hired Anderson to replace Frank Haith. He'll be coaching against Kentucky in Rupp Arena on Tuesday.

Quote"A Division II coach doesn't get this opportunity very often," Anderson said. "I hope I represent a lot of really good Division II coaches, and I hope that we do well. I'm excited about being at Mizzou and having this chance."

Anderson described himself as the benefactor of good timing. Norm Stewart, the coaching icon of Missouri basketball, retired in 1999. The next three coaches were not connected to Stewart's tenure: Quin Snyder, Mike Anderson and Haith.

"I think there was a desire for a connection from the past," said Anderson, a Missouri native who played for Stewart. Guiding Central Missouri to a national championship helped, too, he said.

Of course, the move from Central Missouri to Missouri brought big changes. For instance, media day in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association had the coach go to a room on campus and tape a five-question interview that was posted on the Internet. Reporters clicked on which coach they wanted to hear.

"So this is a little bit neater," Anderson said at SEC Media Days, which were held next to a golf resort in Charlotte, N.C.

At Central Missouri, he had two assistants and a graduate assistant. He said his Missouri staff included three assistants, a strength coach, a basketball operations guy, a video guy, two secretaries, an equipment manager, a trainer, two graduate assistants, eight managers and six student workers.

"I said, 'What do you guys all do?'" Anderson said. "I quickly found out there's plenty to do."

More from Kentucky's 86-37 win over Mizzou

QuoteMissouri shot just 27.1 percent from the floor. The Tigers missed 17 of their 18 three-point attempts. Jonathan Williams, who came in as the team's leading scorer at 13.7 points per game, missed all 10 of his first-half shots and ended up one-of-13 for the night. The 6-9 Williams scored three points and grabbed just two rebounds.

"I think he tried to do too much," said Missouri coach Kim Anderson.

"I think our length bothered him," said UK coach John Calipari.

Missouri averaged just 0.599 points per possession, second-lowest against Kentucky this season. Montana State averaged 0.400.

The 37 points was the fewest by Missouri since a 41-36 loss on Jan. 9, 1950 at Oklahoma. Tuesday was Missouri's largest loss since a 111-56 loss at Kansas State on Jan. 3, 1998.
