Scarblog: Sweet 16 is nice but it's past time for Alabama to go farther

QuoteC.M. Newton and Mark Gottfried each took Alabama to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 once. Wimp Sanderson set the standard by advancing the Crimson Tide to the regional semifinals six times.

Nate Oats is on pace to surpass Sanderson before his well-deserved new contract expires. When Alabama plays North Carolina on Thursday night in the home of the LA Lakers, it will be the third Sweet 16 game for Oats and the Tide in his five years as head coach, the third in the last four years, actually, and the second straight.

Only Sanderson has gotten there with that kind of frequency.

In the SEC, only Kentucky with 48 regional semifinal trips - according to the conference media guide - has reached the Sweet 16 more than Alabama, which is making its 11th visit to this round. That ties the Tide with Florida, one more than LSU with 10. Tennessee also will play its 10th Sweet 16 game Friday night against Creighton.

That's the good news for Alabama. The bad news: The Crimson Tide has the worst Sweet 16 record of any Division I program in the nation at 1-9.

Alabama has lost at this point in the Big Dance as a 1 seed (2023), a 2 seed (1987, 2021), a 4 seed (1982, 1991), a 5 seed (1986) and a 7 seed (1985, 1990). The teams were not seeded in 1976 when, in a regional semifinal, Alabama came closer than anyone to beating eventual undefeated champion Indiana.

Under Oats, Alabama lost in the regional semifinals as a 2 seed in 2021 to UCLA in overtime and last year as the No. 1 overall seed to San Diego State as a nine-point second-half lead vanished in a hailstorm of missed shots (Brandon Miller among them).

Cohen: Bruce Pearl finally explains why K.D. Johnson entered the transfer portal

QuoteAfter three years at Auburn, K.D. Johnson announced Tuesday that he plans to enter the transfer portal.

It ended a run at Auburn where he became a fan favorite for his oft-described "psycho" play on the court.

At his season review press conference, head coach Bruce Pearl explained why Johnson is leaving. It came from his meeting with Johnson at the of the season and the clear realization that if Johnson wants more playing time in his final year of eligibility, it won't happen at Auburn.

"What I anticipated in my meetings with K.D. was that our roster in the backcourt, particularly with Denver Jones returning, it's gonna be a bit more of the same for K.D.," Pearl said Thursday. "In other words, coming off the bench, not quite being able to play as freely as he would've liked to play. There's only so many minutes, only so much opportunity. We just talked about the fact that: Would the joy of the game be more if perhaps he was someplace else and had more of an opportunity to do more of what KD does. Our discussion was really, really good."

Johnson's playing time decreased each of his three years at Auburn including a bench role the final two years.

Quote from: SoonerSooie on March 26, 2024, 07:19:27 amI flat don't understand the "obsession" or seeming so, of some posters about Muss leaving. He has one bad year after three straight incredible years, and some on here think it is time for him to go????????!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously? And just who, pray tell, would be the replacement?

And yes, I am aware that some have reported that Muss himself has (perhaps) put out feelers. No idea if that is true, but that does not negate the point of my post. What team / school in its right mind would even consider getting rid of a humongously successful coach with his track record because of one bad year???

Good grief, Charlie Brown.

To be clear, his last two years have been less than incredible. The Sweet 16 run masked a lousy '22-'23 SEC record, and '23-'24 was a record breaking disaster. If he fails to recognize that trend, next year may be his last whether he wants to leave or not. I hope he benefits from this year's failure by examining the causes.
