Throughout the years some people have tried to brave Niagara Falls inside a barrel. Others have made the wet trek into the falls via a tour boat.

John Daly, however, challenged Niagara Falls in a different, and albeit safer, way Wednesday night.

The heavy-hitting PGA Tour veteran, who helped coin the phrase "grip it and rip it," attempted to become the first man to drive a ball from one side of Niagara gorge to another, teeing it up from Table Rock platform in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The event was part of ceremonies opening Thundering Waters Golf Club.

Daly hit 20 balls from a platform in attempting to span the 342-yard distance onto Goat Island, N.Y. The closest he got was on his second try when the ball caromed off the bottom of a wall just short of the target. Daly has averaged 305 yards off the tee this season, good for sixth on the PGA Tour.

"I have hit some towering drives in my time," Daly said a few months ago, "but to try and clear Niagara Falls would be an awesome feat."
