Why is there bad blood?  I've never understood why there is bad blood between Gus and Arkansas?

Houston Nutt and Reggie Herring started it and Jeffie fed it.

If Nutt would have swallowed his pride and let Gus do his thing, we would have probably won the SEC in either 2006 or 2007. Nutt would have continued as coach or he could have retired at the peak in 2007 and became AD, and let Gus takeover.

However, he couldn't get out of his own way.

It's ironic gus is being blamed of doing the same thing now with his new OC

I'd prefer that we go a different direction, rather than bringing back Malzahn. I know that Nutt and his MSM were giving Malzahn hell when he came to Arkansas, but he recruited and signed 5 players from his Springdale team for the UofA and then left them here with Nutt(less) when he decided to leave, rather than share the OC title with an idiot who thought ladders and cinder blocks were football training equipment. His (in my eyes) deserting his players soured me on Malzahn and I'm still not over it. I never root for his Auburn team and wish that they would lose each and every game.
Your point is well taken, but I don't think Malzahn had much choice but to leave when he did.

Nope, we will see how many are still wanting him after he intentionally runs the score up on us this year. If he can score 70 he will and I fully expect them to do so.

I'd be happy with Gus, not sure why there is so much hate.

Bear Bryant
Jimmy Johnson
Barry Switzer
Kenny Hatfield

and yes, Gus Malzahn.......    shall I go on with a list of Arkansas either born and raised, or played for the UofA, coaching prodigy's that were spurned by the UofA as two on this list are two of only three coaches to ever win both collegiate national championships as well as SuperBowls (and all 3 have Arkansas ties)?

I've always thought Gus would be a great fit here..never understood why so many people hate him.  The dude wins where ever he goes and yes he is in a better recruiting area at Auburn but I believe he could recruit better here than about any other coach we have had.

i think gus would take the job.  better then CBB and better then miles.

gus knows all these nwa high school coaches.  if you want in state players to go to the ua, ...gus' system is better suited for arkansas' high school talent.

Jumping from Auburn to Arkansas in the 1960's would have been a step up. Nowadays it would be a big step backwards.

So people are mad because Gus brought recruits to Arkansas was the Co-OC then left Arkansas because he got a better paying job at Auburn to be the lone OC then gets a job at ArkSt. has them playing at a high level and then leaves that job to take the HC job in Auburn which IMO is a top ten job and people are mad at Malzahn? Seems like he made moves to progress in his profession. This post alone shows half the issue with Arkansas sports. If Malzahn wanted this job I'm all for him.

Re: Gus Bus

I find the Gus style of play more enjoyable to watch.  He's built a power running team from spread formations. Also he has somewhat ditched the HUNH since that style puts too much pressure on your defense.  I also, like how Gus will adjust his philosophy to his players.  Something CBB can't seem to grasp.  He started at Auburn the same year CBB started at Arkansas, and nothing is more of a sign of how both coaches have built or maintained their programs than last year's game..Auburn 56-3 (and possibly) this year's game.

Gus overall 40-19 SEC 21-14 -- CBB overall  27-29 SEC 10-24.

Gus is winning in the SEC -- CBB isn't!

I'll take anyone (aside from Briles) that can win games in the SEC.

To drill down on their comparative won/loss records each coach has lost five OOC games. Gus lost to #1 FL State NC game, Whisky, Oklahoma in Bowl, Clemson #1 and Clemson. Bret has lost to Toledo, Texas Tech, Rutgers, VA Tech and TCU. Additionally, Gus plays cross division rival Georgia each year while Bret plays Missouri. Itís fairly easy to say Gus has played a somewhat tougher schedule than Bret as they are both playing SEC West opponents each year.

Unless Auburn falls apart the second half of this season he will probably be far removed from the hot seat. He would be stupid to come back to AR where so many petty fans would make it miserable for him.

Nutt was actually responsible for throwing the Springfield 5 under the bus, not Gus. Any man with a sense of pride would not accept a demotion after being named SEC OC of the year. Nutt put the handwriting on the wall for Gus that he, Gus, would have no control over the offense when he was demoted to co-OC. Gus probably saved his career by leaving AR when he did.

He took a cut in pay, went to Tulsa as Co-offensive coordinator, which is the title that he would have held, had he stayed at Arkansas and shared that title with the Dallas Cowboys film study guy (his name escapes me). It just really upsets me that Malzahn talked those boys out of going to other schools (two were doing the Gator chomp in the end zone at War Memorial after one had scored a TD in the HS All Star game, another to Notre Dame) and then because Nutt and the MSM made Malzahn's professional life hell, he left those kids after selling them on following him to Fayetteville.

Neither.  Not one REAL Razorback fan would stop supporting or watching the Hogs.  The last 2-3 years of Nutt were HELL, but I still watched every smoke draw.  The only, ONLY folks who would bolt, have Ole Miss jerseys from 2008 tucked in the back of their closet.

There's not.  Except for folks who still hold Nutt's coin purse.  There are still folks here who question Mike Irwin when he opines on the matter.  And there is ZERO folks closer to the situation than him on this site.

Are you serious?? Mike Irwin is the one who posted that Gus has blood on his hands over what happened in 2006 too. That's why there is bad blood between Arkansas and Gus.

Hog fans have a Bitter Ex mentality when it comes to Arkansans who have ties here and are successful elsewhere. Either that's it or they are butthurt about the beatdowns Gus gave in high school.

He was very divisive among boosters and upper echelon people around the program.

Gus is getting top talent and still having aubbie fans talking about him being on the hot seat.  He's not a program builder or able to sustain, he flutters when good things fall in his lap.

Arkansas will look in another direction

Winning cures all and there isn't as much bad blood as some would like to believe. Many boosters would welcome him back.

2.  His mama should have taught him better
3.  It shows a certain lack of awareness of his surroundings(TV cameras)

  • It's not revenge he's after. It's a reckoning.

And?

He is competing for a sec title. And has the pick of recruits in the southeast. You canít do that when your university is more in tune with Manhattan, Kansas or Des Moines, Iowa.

Ouch, the truth hurts

Gus?  No thanks.  Charlie Strong I'd welcome.  If he was willing to come.

I must have been out of touch for a period of time , would someone please fill me in on what Gus did that made so many detest so badly. I was always of the opinion that HDN did Gus wrong. He went elsewhere and wound up at AU where he then is supposed to win witch includes us. Someone pleas fill me in on what I missed.
You are exactly right. Nutt and Frank ran him off. Frank only wanted him because he was pressured to bring the Springfield Five to the hogs. When they all didn't turn out and the parents off three of the boys jumped Frank, some say with Malzahn's egging, he was pushed out.
Before he ever coached a game for the Hogs, I personally witnessed Nutt ridicule him at a Razorback club meeting.
