Lagway signs with The Network Advisory, Legacy Sports Advisors for NIL representation
by:
Pete Nakos

QuoteDJ Lagway is primed to be an NIL star at Florida.

The former Five-Star Plus+ prospect and top-ranked quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class is now enrolled in Gainesville, ready to start his college career with the Gators. Spring practice is just weeks away.

Despite not being able to monetize his name, image and likeness during his historic career at Willis, he can now legally turn a profit. He's now brought on representation, too, signing with The Network Advisory and Legacy Sports Advisors for marketing, brand partnerships and NIL representation.

Lagway will be working directly with Network Advisory's Justin J. Giangrande and Legacy's Deiric Jackson. Both agents have a history of working with Florida quarterbacks. An alum of Florida, Giangrande previously worked closely with Tim Tebow during his time in Gainesville.

"I'm excited to have The Network Advisory and Legacy with me on this journey," Lagway said.

DJ Lagway brings impressive resume to Gainesville
Gatorade National Player of the Year threw for 4,631 yards, 58 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 72.1% of his passes in his senior season. He's also been named the National Quarterback Club high school player of the year and Mr. Texas.

Florida High School Athletic Association set to discuss NIL proposal
by:
Pete Nakos

QuoteAfter months of drafting legislation to allow high school athletes to monetize their NIL, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) is set to meet next week to discuss its latest proposal.

The three-page proposal will be discussed at Monday's board of directors meeting and has been tabbed as a "discussion item." The latest edition is similar to a draft of the reform proposal that was first circulated on Jan. 19 after FHSAA officials met with lawmakers on the Education Quality Subcommittee in Florida's House of Representatives.

The most notable edition in this version is the addition of language making it harder for transfers to ink NIL deals. In the state of Florida, transfer students are eligible immediately to join an existing team. The NIL proposal would prohibit an athlete who transfers in-season from signing NIL agreements that season unless granted an FHSAA exemption.

"A year ago, they were targeting this summer," a source who has worked closely with the FHSAA on the proposal told On3. "From what I've been hearing, the governor's office has been putting a lot of pressure for this to happen through the FHSAA or the governor's office will just get it done. What some are fearful of, is unlike other states, Florida is open transfer. Now you compound NIL, how are they going to control it? That's why they're dragging their feet."

FHSAA proposal similar to other state associations
Currently, 34 local athletic associations allow high school athletes to participate in NIL deals without forfeiting the ability to play high school sports. The exact number of high school associations that allow NIL is still somewhat hazy because of limitations with some activities and pending state legislation. Nonetheless...

NIL Timeline: Moments that defined an error

by: Pete Nakos

QuoteNCAA prohibited college athletes from profiting from their name, image and likeness for more than a century.

That all came to a halt in the summer of 2021, as the prohibition on athletes monetizing their own publicity rights was lifted. In the 31 months since that moment, the future of college sports has shifted.

July 1, 2021
The NIL Era begins as the NCAA rushes to put together an interim policy after decades of mounting pressure, highlighted by the O'Bannon v. NCAA decision

August 2021
Roughly one month after the launch date of college athletes being allowed to monetize their publicity rights, booster-funded organizations called NIL collectives begin to form. Collecting funds to funnel back to athletes has become crucial in retaining yet attracting talent.

The first transfer portal window, including the one-time transfer rule, coincides with the start of the NL Era.

March 11, 2022

May 2022
The first real sign that college sports stakeholders are seeking Congressional assistance in the NIL space as the SEC's Greg Sankey and Pac-12's George Kliavkoff head to Washington

September 2022
With high schoolers able to monetize their NIL in the state of California, 2024 recruit T.A. Cunningham and his family moved from Georgia to California for his junior year of high school football. Initially ruled ineligible by the California Interscholastic Federation, he was deemed eligible by the end of September. Highly-touted prospects leave their home counties for the potential to make NIL cash.

Oct. 10, 2022
Nike makes its biggest statement yet in the NIL world, announcing endorsement agreements with Bronny James, Caitlin Clark, Haley Jones, DJ Wagner and Juju Watkins.

January 2023
After flipping his commitment from Miami to Florida in November, highly-touted transfer quarterback Jaden Rashada asks out of his National Letter of Intent after his NIL deal with the Gator Collective is voided. Rashada lands at Arizona State as news breaks the deal was worth upwards of $13 million. The most high-profile situation of NIL gone wrong

April 2, 2023
Iowa and LSU meet in the women's basketball national championship game, a back-and-forth game that shatters TV records with an average 9.9 million viewers. The Tigers pull off the win, but Iowa's Caitlin Clark and LSU's Angel Reese walk away as social media sensations primed for NIL success.

May 17, 2023
EA Sports contracts OneTeam Partners to facilitate college athletes' likeness for the 2024 EA Sports College Football video game.

June 9, 2023

Dec. 5, 2023

Dec. 15, 2023
A U.S. District Court judge in West Virginia issues a temporary restraining order, suspending all NCAA transfer restrictions through the end of the 2023-24 academic year. As more states sign on to the antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA's transfer rules, the NCAA sends out a memo stating multi-time transfers are free to transfer and play immediately in 2024-25 without securing a waiver.

Jan. 11, 2024
The NCAA levies its first real NIL sanctions against a school, coming at Florida State. The findings released by the NCAA Committee on Infractions describe Florida State offensive coordinator Alex Atkins facilitating impermissible contact between a transfer portal athlete and a booster. On top of the booster and NIL collective being disassociated, Atkins is handed a two-year show-cause and three-game suspension in the most drastic step by the NCAA to govern NIL activity.

Jan. 30, 2024
The NCAA formally launches an investigation into Tennessee athletics, inquiring about multiple alleged NIL violations centering around Nico

Feb. 2, 2024
With the NCAA facing multiple legal forces, struggling to enforce NIL rules and tampering in the transfer portal, the Big Ten and SEC announce the formation of a joint advisory group to find solutions and steer college sports into the future.

Feb. 5, 2024
A National Labor Relations Board regional director deems Dartmouth men's basketball players employees and calls for a union election.

Feb. 23, 2024
Federal judge Clifton L. Corker grants a preliminary injunction in favor of the attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia in the Eastern District of Tennessee, lifting the NCAA's policy of prohibiting booster-funded NIL collectives from communicating with high school recruits and transfer portal players. The landmark decision sets the tone for the remainder of the lawsuit and allows athletes to have free reign over negotiations. Corker wrote in his decision that "without the give and take of a free market, student-athletes simply have no knowledge of their true NIL value. It is this suppression of negotiating leverage and the consequential lack of knowledge that harms student-athletes."

Kentucky's Rob Dillingham, Reed Sheppard ink NIL deals with Pizza
by:
Pete Nakos

QuoteDonatos has struck NIL gold again in the Kentucky market.

The pizza franchise entered a year-long endorsement deal with Oscar Tshiebwe ahead of the 2022-23 season. Now the company is back in the Lexington market, working with the freshmen duo of Rob Dillingham and Reed Sheppard. Donatos has five locations spread throughout Lexington.

The Kentucky guards announced a new NIL partnership with Donatos in a video released Monday on social media. In return for using the special promo code "DonatsDuo," Big Blue fans can score a special edition poster of Dillingham and Sheppard.

"We're your official Donatos Duo," Sheppard said in the promotional video. "Order our favorite pizzas at any Lexington location and get a limited edition poster. My favorite pizza is the hot honey, and you can add banana peppers if you want it 'Reed Style.'"

"And I'm a fan of pepperoni, so I always go for The Pepp 150, so you should get that," Dillingham adds.

Sheppard, the son of Kentucky legend Jeff Sheppard, has carved out a role for himself as a true freshman. The former four-star recruit and top-40 prospect in the 2023 class is averaging 28.2 minutes with 11.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists. Plus, he's shooting 51.4% from beyond the arc.

He leads the SEC in steals despite coming off the bench.

Sheppard is the fourth Kentucky athlete to partner in an NIL deal with a racehorse. Last August, former Big Blue basketball star Oscar Tshiebwe also promoted Life is Good in a deal with WinStar. Plus, former UK quarterback Will Levis endorsed Clairborne Farm's War of Will and receiver Dane Key promoted WinStar Farms stallion Nashville in 2022.

Ole Miss-driven The Grove NIL Collective launches 'March to Victory' bracket challenge

by:
Pete Nakos

QuoteOle Miss-focused NIL entity The Grove Collective is back to creating innovative fundraising tactics.

The donor-funded organization launched its "March to Victory Bracket Challenge" on Monday. Powered by the sporting goods manufacturer Realtree, the month-long initiative aims to raise $10 million and surpass 10,000 Grove Collective members by the end of March.

Opposed to a traditional marketing campaign, The Grove is leaning into the idea of March Madness. And taking advantage of its university alignment, the collective is working hand-in-hand with Ole Miss Athletics, the Ole Miss Athletics Foundation and the Ole Miss Alumni Association.

Splitting the Ole Miss fanbase up into 16 regions, the bracket-style tourney will determine which area of the country raises the most dollars for the Rebels' NIL operations. Realtree has already offered to match $500,000 in donations.

South Carolina-driven NIL collectives Garnet Trust, Carolina Rise merge

by:
Pete Nakos

QuoteMore consolidation is coming to the donor-funded NIL collective space, this time in the SEC at South Carolina.

Gamecock-driven entities Garnet Trust and Carolina Rise merged on Thursday. The entity will continue to operate as Garnet Trust, an official partner of South Carolina Athletics, which launched in November 2021. More than 30 months into the NIL Era, booster-led collectives have been charged with payrolling top college football and basketball programs. While institutions have not stepped up and started revenue sharing, collectives are now facing donor fatigue.

Merging two collectives could be a smart way for a united voice in the South Carolina NIL market. The Garnet Trust collective services all South Carolina athletes and is on track to work with 200 athletes in 2024

QuoteGeorgia wide receiver Arian Smith has secured a unique NIL deal. He is joining forces with shoe company Caddix Cleats, which designs cleats to help reduce injuries.

Caddix recently released SmartStud technology designed to reduce the risk of non-contact ACL, MCL and ankle injuries. The company offers a range of options for athletes, including men's low and mid-football cleats, as well as women's soccer cleats.

First and 10: Why Brady Cook, Mizzou could be the SEC's biggest Playoff surprise
Matt Hayes |

QuoteThe buildout
Everyone in the SEC has similar NIL collectives. The amount of funds, for the most part, isn't going to allow one program to drastically outspend others.

So it comes to what it always has in the player procurement process: a hot team, and a staff that can reach players and convince them their best road to the NFL — and to a lesser degree (like it or not), their academic and personal development — is through their specific school.

Coaches are salesmen first, coaches second. Always have been, always will be.

Saban weighs in on NIL, revenue sharing in college football during time on Capitol Hill

by:
Pete Nakos

QuoteSaban announced his retirement as the coach at Alabama in January.

On Tuesday on Capitol Hill, he had his chance to explain how name, image and likeness shifted his job in recent years.

"Well, all the things that I believed in for all these years, 50 years of coaching, no longer exist in college athletics," he said. "So it always was about developing players. It was always about helping people when you're successful in life. My wife even said to me, we have all the recruits over on Sunday with their parents for breakfast. And she would always meet with the mothers and talk about how she was going to help and impact their sons and how they would be well taken care of.

"And she came to me, like right before our retirement and said, 'Why are we doing this?' And I said, 'What do you mean?' She said, 'All they care about is how much you're going to pay them.'"

Saban was also emphatic when asked about how NIL has reshaped the college sports landscape, specifically college football.

"It's whoever wants to pay, the most money raised, the most money to buy the most players is going to have the best opportunity to win," Saban said Tuesday.

Decade after Shabazz Napier's 'going to bed hungry' outcry, athletes have the food, the power

QuoteTen years have passed, but it feels more like a half-century.

That's how much industry disruption has occurred since UConn star Shabazz Napier's critical comments about the NCAA's collegiate model at the Final Four raised eyebrows and ruffled suits of the administrative class.

The 2014 Final Four's Most Outstanding Player said there were nights he went to bed "starving" because he didn't have enough money as a college student and believed athletes deserve "something in return" after seeing his jersey sold.

"I just feel like a student-athlete, and sometimes, like I said, there are hungry nights and I'm not able to eat and I still got to play up to my capabilities," Napier said in 2014. QuoteOakland long-range shooter and social media sensation Jack Gohlke has landed another NIL deal.

Gohlke has partnered with Formula Bot, the AI-powered data analyst that helps you work faster yet smarter with data. This is Gohlke's six significant NIL deal since he took March Madness by storm. His 32-point performance propelled 14th-seeded Oakland to an 80-76 win over third-seeded Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Along with the Formula Bot deal, Gohlke has signed NIL partnerships with Buffalo Wild Wings, OOFOS, The NIL Store, Intuit TurboTax and of course Barstool Sports.

"He's making the most of his moment in the sun," an NIL agent familiar with the times. "When you think of the NIL in the traditional sense, this is exactly what it should be. A March Madness hero cashing in on the national exposure. I love it. Get it while you can."

15 Club launches 500 Strong membership club at key time for Kentucky NIL market

by Pete Nakos

QuoteKentucky did not rush into the NIL Era in the summer of 2021.

Athletic director Mitch Barnhart took a measured approach, making sure the Wildcats navigated the new landscape of college sports carefully. With minimal direction from the NCAA, some institutions went full-throttle. The model was replicated across the nation after the first NIL collective popped up in Florida. Kentucky was one of the final SEC institutions to have a donor-driven entity.

The Wildcats are now making moves to compete with top collectives. In a week where all attention in Kentucky athletics is around the future of John Calipari, the Wildcat-driven NIL collective The 15 Club has formed 500 Strong, an exclusive membership club for top-level boosters.

The 15 Club launched in December 2021 but was relaunched and reorganized in November 2022. Managed by the NIL company Athlete Advantage, Kentucky's NIL club believes the new "VIP" level membership can elevate the football program. Ryan Maxwell, who serves as Athlete Advantage's general counsel, told On3 that 500 Strong draws inspiration from other NIL donor clubs across the country.
