Tuscaloosa is a weird town—somewhat impoverished.  Not an exciting atmosphere despite their history.  Fairly run down place to have a flagship university.  Guess it's Alabama, though...

I drove through there a couple years' ago coming home from Atlanta.  It looked like a city dump.  Nothing there impressed me.

The outskirts of Tuscaloosa are pretty dumpy (strip malls and the like) but the downtown area has its charms. There and The Strip are where you'll find the nightlife.

The university campus is gorgeous IMHO and Bryant-Denny is a great place to watch a game.

If you want an unusual restaurant recommendation, check out Cypress Inn -- it's across the river from the university.

I went in 99.  It was right after Nutt had left Clint in the ULM game too long.  Needless to say we did not win.  No desire to go back.

Luckily for you, I'm sure most of the Bama fans will feel sorry for us for the beat down they're gonna give us as opposed to just talk trash like the Barners would do. You'll probably get some pity, maybe the Bama fans will give you free beer at their tailgates. Always find the bright side!

This is a game we should forfeit and accept the 2-0 whipping and use the time to try and put together enough game to not get killed by Gus.  Need to save face here.  Maybe even keep several players from getting injured.  This BAMA squad has been taught how to make the players suffer.

Hmmm so would forfeiting and losing 2-0 count as covering?  If so I've got a brilliant idea for paying the buyout.

Bought tickets before season started hoping we could compete.  Tried to back out but our hotel in Bham wont let us cancel.  Going to try to enjoy the atmosphere and cross it off my list of SEC stadiums.

One thing you'll notice is the difference in the way the crowd interacts with the game compared to the Hog fans (wms OR RRS). 101k STANDING and into it the entire game.

That's for sure..when I was there in '11 Tyler had to call a TO within the first couple mins of the game it was so loud..makes DWRRS sound like a high school game.

My best friend and I are heading down to Tuscaloosa to tailgate and support the Hogs. We may get beat but I'm still looking forward to having a good time down there and checking out the atmosphere. Is there anyone on here making the trip as well and would like to do some tailgating?  Anyone have any suggestions on where to go for drinks or meals?

Can’t believe you’re not asking for advice on where to pick up hot girls....  boy, guess things have sure changed since I was younger.....

How much are NWA hotel prices affecting football attendance?
« Reply #18222 on: October 18, 2017, 03:20:08 pm »

There is a glut of cheap tickets available for every Razorback football game these days, but if you check hotels right now room rates are pricing the fans who might purchase them out of going to a night game.

It is a factor that to keep in mind when you see the dwindling attendance, especially for the last two games of the season, and one that will need to be addressed in the future as the UA continues to add even more seats in a stadium it has very rarely sold out since expansion despite news releases telling us otherwise.

(This is not a GSD post. The time has come for no more games at WMS.)

It will change when the hotels start seeing a drop-off in business or competition drives the price down.

Unfortunately, the hotel problem is serious at all the other SEC locations.  I guess they'd rather have a half full hotel at sky high prices than a full one at justifiably reasonable prices.

Losing has more to do with attendance than anything.  Hotel rates are all supply/demand based.  If they weren't sufficiently booked they would be burning off the excess inventory with lower rates on sites such as Hotwire.  Hotwire rates are as high as I've ever seen them, meaning hotels are at or near capacity.  I just checked a couple of Bentonville hotes where friends have gotten last minute rooms at very affordable rates before, and they are booked full.  Also they have always been high for game weekends and required 2 nights stays etc.

If had a .500 or better record and season was looking up people wouldn't GAF about hotel rates.  They would stay with friends, pay the hotel rates or just make it a late night and drive home after the game.

I checked many of the games on stub hub at the start of the season and they weren't at extraordinarily low prices, because people had hope for the season.  The availability and price have more to do with people's perceived view of the rest of the season than hotel rates.

Ran into this exact issue when trying to book a hotel for the game this weekend. I booked a hotel 3 months ago in Conway because I could not find a decent prices anywhere around Fayetteville.

Supply and demand is a beautiful thing. Living in Fayetteville I've never had to check hotels out personally but from what I hear the demand is high and supply is low. Until that changes, prices won't.

I'll tell you what is and will continue to compete with hotels..AirBnB.  My sister has rented her house in Fayetteville out for 2 football weekends already. The prices may be a tad higher than a hotel but for the price the guests get several rooms, a kitchen, private yard/hang out area.  I can see this being more popular if hotels fill up or charge higher rates.

AirBNB/VRBO or stay in another city. I've found a house for rent for the weekend for as cheap as some of the nicer area hotels on game weekends.

This is craft fair weekend in NWA. Crazy that they would schedule it on a game weekend, but I imagine they probably had the date set before the SEC announced the football schedule. There won’t be any hotel rooms within 50 miles this weekend.

It's a factor for sure.  Even with cheap tickets, you're pretty much going to spend a thousand dollars a weekend minimum up there when you go to a game.  I will agree that since every game is televised that it is all about the experience these days instead of actually wanting to see the game.  That said, we have to be good enough at least that the game doesn't piss you off.  No need to spend between$1 and $2k in a day or two just to watch crappy football and fight the crowds.  If you just want to go up there and see something, wait until basketball season and you can actually get into some restaurants and the like without having to compete with 75k people.

I can't help it if you are a pauper and spend accordingly.  $500 for two nights at a hotel, dinner a couple times, tickets, $100 gas for the Denali and you are at $1k easy.

IMO that's not a major problem. The real issue is the team's performance. I can PROMISE you that were the team winning on a consistent basis the vast majority of fans who had to stay overnight wouldn't really give it much thought. Having said that, as it always is in a free enterprise system it's a question of supply and demand. If the demand is going down due to lack of fan support and interest prices WILL come down. Empty rooms don't pay for themselves.

One last thought: the reality of life is that most, not all, fans will find a way to scrape together enough money to be able to attend and stay if necessary. While prices might keep a few away, I can assure you that the fan who can get truly excited with a team's performance and success will scratch around and find enough loose change to be able to pay for game attendance.

Obviously supply and demand matter, but prices are stickier than they should be ... hotels are resistant to lower prices even if they are not fully booked.

I agree it is a problem.

Some of the cancellation policies are just ridiculous too.

Then why are you even commenting in a thread that SPECIFICALLY posited the question as to if hotel prices were affecting attendance?

Because I stay when I don't fly up the day of the game, and I don't spend 2k, and you don't have to spend two nights. I never have been forced to spend two nights, I occasionally do as I've had children attending up there for the past 8 years, and will for the next 6. So, as someone who has been coming to games up there, I find that hotel prices haven't increased that much. In fact, the opening of Crystal Bridges has raised the average price of a room up north, more than the football game pressure.

Hasn’t mine. We typically make reservations about three months before the season starts. Usually find rooms for $125 to $175 a night, which isn’t bad at all.

Hasn’t mine. We typically make reservations about three months before the season starts. Usually find rooms for $125 to $175 a night, which isn’t bad at all.

I'd say I average $150/night, I don't ever recall spending $200/night.
