Kahlil McKenzie set to start a different climb when he arrives at Tennessee in two weeks. http://bit.ly/1FajdRI

QuoteKNOXVILLE -- In a little more than two weeks, Kahlil McKenzie will trade the hill for "The Hill."

And one of the biggest recruiting prizes Tennessee has landed in the past few years will swap his status as a five-star prospect for the life of a college freshman.

As one would expect, the big defensive tackle is excited to begin his career with the Volunteers after a long wait through the recruiting process, his commitment last July and signing day in February.

High hopes and greater expectations surround McKenzie's awaited arrival as he continues the Tennessee legacy started in the 1980s by his father, Reggie, and uncle, Raleigh. But the only standard that matters is his own.

"I hold myself to probably a higher standard than anyone, probably outside of my dad," he told the Times Free Press last week. "I like to hold myself very accountable. I like to go out and earn things and prove people right or wrong. I want to prove people right for that five-star rating. You want to prove people wrong who say you're not.

"That's the main focus of mine, and those are my own expectations. I'm going to come in, and it's going to be a nose-to-the-ground kind of grind. I want to get myself in good shape so I can start putting in some work and trying to contribute to this team and help us win some games next season."

McKenzie has been too busy working hard -- with his focus on losing weight and improving conditioning -- to count down the days until his June 8 arrival in Knoxville. After weighing in at 350 pounds at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl...

10 SEC games we're most looking forward to in 2015 http://es.pn/1J2s2S9

QuoteOct. 3, Arkansas at Tennessee: Who wants to be taken seriously? Who wants to go from the next big thing to the real thing? Because that's what this matchup is about, isn't it? We've read and heard all offseason about how Arkansas and Tennessee are on the verge of breaking though, and with good reason. The Razorbacks were one of the toughest outs in the SEC last season, taking conference champ Alabama down to the wire. The Vols, on the other hand, reeled off five wins in their last six games, including a convincing bowl win over Iowa. But there might be room for only one team to rise in the SEC -- who will it be?

What Athlon says about UT http://dlvr.it/B0Fh66

QuotePreseason Rank: No. 22

Predicted SEC finish: Second in the SEC East

Predicted Record: 8-4 overall, 5-3 in the SEC:

Predicted Bowl Destination: Citrus Bowl vs. Wisconsin

Unit Conference Rankings:

Quarterback: No. 3.

Running Back: No. 5

Wide Receivers: No. 3

Offensive Line: No 10

Defensive LIne: No. 5

Linebackers: No. 6

Defensive Backs: No. 6

Their Bottom Line Explanation: "The Volunteers are headed in the right direction under coach Butch Jones. With 17 starters back, along with the addition of a top-10 recruiting class, finishing second in the East is a realistic outcome for Tennessee in 2015. Quarterback Josh Dobbs gave the offense a spark last season, and he is surrounded by a talented group of skill players and four returning starters on the line. Eight starters are back from a defense that limited SEC opponents to just 5.4 yards per play last year. Tennessee will no doubt be improved in 2015, but with a depth chart full of underclassmen and a tough road schedule, this team might be a year away from a trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game."

A look at the top five O-tackles Vols will face in 2015: http://bit.ly/1JcbveI  via @GoVols247

QuoteDENVER KIRKLAND
Junior, Arkansas
Size: 6-foot-5, 343 pounds.
2014 season: Kirkland, a large kid from a solid Booker T. Washington High School program in Miami, hasn't struggled at all adjusting to life in a smaller environment. He started all 13 games for the Razorbacks at right guard, grading out at 79 percent for the year, allowing only one sack and being penalized just three times despite playing more than 750 snaps. He was a rock for the Razorbacks, who produced a pair of 1,000-yard rushers — no other NCAA Division I FBS program did that — and closed strong to get back to a bowl game after going 3-9 in 2013. Arkansas also led the SEC with just 14 sacks allowed. Perhaps that was partially a byproduct of running the ball so much, but it's still an impressive stat. Georgia and Auburn ran a ton, too, but the Razorbacks allowed fewer sacks than either the Bulldogs or Tigers.

Why he's on the list: How good was Washington at guard in 2014? Arkansas coach Bret Bielema moved him to left tackle this spring, saying he typically wants his best offensive lineman at left tackle. It'll be interesting to see how Kirkland's large frame translates to offensive tackle, but the Arkansas staff seems to believe he'll handle it just fine. And considering how well Arkansas runs the ball, we tend to believe that staff knows what it's talking about in that area.

DAN SKIPPER
Junior, Arkansas
Size: 6-foot-10, 307 pounds.
2014 season: After playing in all 12 games and starting the final eight at guard as a true freshman in 2013, Skipper made a big change to left tackle heading into his sophomore season in 2014. Skyscraper Skipper was durable and solid in his new spot, playing more than 700 snaps and graded out higher than 80 percent, which led the team, according to statistics provided by Arkansas' sports information department. And we don't need to repeat the statistics we mentioned earlier, but obviously Arkansas made plenty of noise in the rushing department in 2014.

Why he's on the list: Skipper's move from left tackle to right tackle for the 2014 season could be seen as a demotion of sorts, since left tackle is a much more acclaimed position typically reserved for a team's best O-lineman. But that move was viewed as a reward for Kirkland and a way to get Arkansas' best five O-linemen on the field. It wasn't a slap in Skipper's face. Ja'Wuan James played right tackle for four seasons at Tennessee, and that didn't stop him from becoming a first-round NFL Draft pick. Skipper has fantastic length as a pass blocker, and obviously his height doesn't hurt him in the ground game, either. He seems like a worthy member of this top-five list.

Tennessee coach Butch Jones said 2014 loss to #Gators was turning point for Vols' program: http://bit.ly/1SEAV9g

QuoteVols coughed up a 9-0 lead in the fourth quarter as UF freshman quarterback Treon Harris came off the bench to rally the Gators to a 10-9 win.

Jones recently called the Tennessee's 10th straight loss to the Gators, "the lowest point I've had in my career."

Vols had not come as close to beating the Gators since a 21-20 loss in 2006, when another freshman quarterback, Tim Tebow, played a vital role off the bench for UF.

"Any time you lose is very disappointing," Jones said at this week's SEC meetings. "But obviously Florida's a rivalry game. It means a lot to our fanbase, just like it does to Florida's fanbase."

Gator Nation has reveled in its dominance over Tennessee since 2005. But Jones enters his third season well positioned to end the losing streak.

Jones said the Florida loss was a catalyst for the Vols. Tennessee went on to beat South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Iowa, 45-28 in the Taxslayer Bowl. The Vols also played Alabama tough, losing 34-20, and were in the game until late against SEC East winner Missouri, falling 29-21.

Meanwhile, the Gators would fail to build on the win, with home losses to LSU, Missouri and South Carolina that led to coach Will Muschamp's firing.

"It was a turning point," Jones said of the Florida loss. "We could have let all the outside noise and clutter and distractions really creep in when really we were a very immature football team. We didn't have much experience. Our guys really did a good job of hanging together. Our small core of verteran players did a great job keeping everyone focused.

"I thought that was kind of a galvanizing moment for our football team."

Top five guards #Vols will face in 2015, headlined by a 350-pound TD tosser: http://bit.ly/1RCJGiA  via @GoVols247

Quote1. SEBASTIAN TRETOLA
Fifth-year senior, Arkansas
Size: 6-foot-5, 325 pounds.
2014 season: Everyone remembers Tretola for one particular play during the 2014, and we understand why, but the fact is this big California native is more than just a 325-pound goliath who happens to be able to throw a football. He appeared in all 13 of Arkansas' games last season and started 11 times, eventually settling in as a key member on the biggest and arguably the best offensive line in the SEC. Arkansas was the only team in NCAA Division I FBS football with two 1,000-yard rushers in 2014, and Tretola helped pave the way for them while also helping lead an offensive line that led the SEC with just 14 sacks allowed.

Why he's on the list: Tretola is certainly one of the SEC's best guards, and certainly one of the toughest guards Tennessee will see during the 2015 season. Last season he graded out at 79 percent — which was tied for second on a fantastic offensive line — and had a few games that were much better than that. Tretola graded out at 90 percent with seven knockdown blocks against Texas Tech and added seven more knockdown blocks in the Hogs' upset win over LSU before getting five more the next week in an upset win over LSU. And it stands to reason that he'll be an even better player as a senior, especially when remembering he came from the junior college level and last season was his first in the SEC.

Athlon: Tennessee on the Rise

QuoteEntering Butch Jones' third season on Rocky Top, Tennessee is poised to take another step forward in the East Division in 2015. The Volunteers improved by two games from 2013 to 2014 and closed last year by winning four out of the last five contests. Jones continues to elevate the talent level in Knoxville, and Tennessee returns 17 starters from last season's 7-6 team. With a full year from quarterback Joshua Dobbs, combined with better play from the offensive line, the Volunteers should easily improve off last season's scoring mark (28.9). Tennessee's defense is also poised to take a step forward. End Derek Barnett is one of the nation's best, and cornerback Cam Sutton should be in the mix for first-team All-SEC honors. This unit is where recruiting has paid big dividends for Jones, especially with freshmen Kahlil McKenzie (DT) and Kyle Phillips (DE) adding to a good core of linemen for 2015...

Five SEC Defensive Player of the Year candidates http://es.pn/1FwecTu

QuoteTennessee DL Derrick Barnett

Some defensive ends feast on weaker competition, running by or running through inferior offensive linemen. But Derrick Barnett's numbers weren't inflated in 2014. If anything, he performed best when the moment called for it. Of his ridiculous 20.5 tackles for loss, 18 came in conference play. Twice he had three sacks in a game: at Ole Miss and at South Carolina. And did we mention he did that as a true freshman without the benefit of early enrollment? He was relying on his talent then. With some seasoning and maybe a few veteran tricks up his sleeve, he could be a more well-rounded force in 2015.

Tennessee has made another addition to its special teams in the form of a graduate transfer

QuoteTennessee has made unannounced additions in the form of running back/wide receiver David Abernathy IV, who was signed by then-Bearcats head coach Butch Jones. Nathan Renfro, a graduate transfer from Maryland, has previously joined the Vols' roster.

Abernathy averaged a hair over 25 yards per kickoff return and compiled nearly 1,500 yards from scrimmage in four years as a Bearcat.

Defensive back Lemond Johnson is no longer on the roster.

Abernathy is the great-grandson of Ralph Abernathy, Sr., a close friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his successor as president of the SCLC.

Take Two: Top dark horse Heisman candidate in SEC http://es.pn/1FGF6bE

QuoteIf recent history taught us anything, it's that you don't have to have a ton of on-field experience to break out and have a Heisman season (see: Manziel, Johnny in 2012, and Winston, Jameis in 2013). If a redshirt freshman can win the trophy, I think it's reasonable to assume that a junior who has five starts under his belt can do it too -- someone like Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs.

The Vols are trending up and some have gone so far as to say they could win the SEC East in 2015. If that happens, Dobbs likely will be a big reason for that rise. He's a dual-threat quarterback, capable of beating teams with his arm and his legs. He showed grit, poise and leadership during his time behind center in the second half of last season.

The 6-foot-3, 212-pound Dobbs helped lead a late comeback win over South Carolina with 301 passing yards, 166 rushing yards and five combined touchdowns in his first start, and he was 4-1 as a starter. A full season starting could see him approach 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards, and if that goes along with a lot of Tennessee wins -- maybe a 10-win regular season? -- it might be enough to get him a seat at Heisman ceremony.

GoVols247's Second-Year Surge series continues with a look at #Vols Soph LB Elliott Berry: http://bit.ly/1f8UA1q

QuoteELLIOTT BERRY
Position: Weakside linebacker
Size: 6-foot-0, 217 pounds

After considering the obvious — he's a converted safety — it's quickly apparent that Berry's quickness and athleticism and pass-covering ability are all pluses for his role at weakside 'backer, and he's a tough kid (all the Berry boys are tough) who doesn't mind to stick his nose in there and support the run. And on more than one occasion in practice, he's been all-but run over by a bigger back but somehow still gotten that back on the ground, which to be candid is something smaller linebackers have to do from time to time...

Tennessee's coaches aren't wrong when they bemoan their lack of proven depth at linebacker. That's true. They're not even stretching the truth.

Berry, for all his potential on the defensive side, seems likely to be the Vols' third-best or fourth-best option at weakside 'backer. Reeves-Maybin is a clear-cut starter and All-SEC candidate, and McDowell is someone who seems likely to be on the field in some capacity as at least a second-teamer in 2015, and the Vols also have incoming options like Quart'e Sapp and Austin Smith who could fight their way into the mix. They also have multiple middle linebackers who have experience on the weakside and can move back there at a moment's notice.

Berry, because of his lack of experience and lack of ideal size, is going to need an exceptionally good summer and preseason camp to have any hope of cracking the main rotation as an every-down weakside 'backer. It's much more likely to see him contend for a spot on the field in loose-down situations — even then he'd need to outplay some very good (and also very young) players...

Arkansas and Tennessee trending upward heading into this season, when they'll play for the first time since 2011. http://timesfreepress.com/news/sports/college/story/2015/jun/17/arkansas-tennessee-share-high-hopes-2015-coll/309943/ ...

QuoteCall it the Mirror Bowl, the Expectations Bowl or the Trending Upward Bowl.

Whatever the label, the Southeastern Conference football matchup between Arkansas and Tennessee on Oct. 3 inside Neyland Stadium possesses a lot more intrigue than it would have a couple of years ago. Arkansas coach Bret Bielema and Tennessee counterpart Butch Jones will be guiding teams that capped 7-6 seasons in 2014 with resounding bowl victories, which has their respective fan bases salivating for more.

"There is a lot of momentum in our program," Jones said on a recent conference call. "We had 63,000 people at our spring game, and we thought at 8 o'clock that morning that we were going to have to cancel it with the threat of severe weather. I think our players have fed off the positive momentum, but they've been extremely focused in terms of their capacity for work and their mental effort and intensity. They brought it each and every day this spring, and that's what you want.

"You want the expectations, because this is a very proud football program, but we also understand that we have a long, long way to go in the development."

Arkansas and Tennessee are rotating, cross-divisional foes who last met in 2011 and are not scheduled to meet again after this season until 2020...

All of those are strong contenders for Tennessee's second most difficult game of the year.  But, phrased as, "which game makes me most nervous after Alabama?"  It's Arkansas.
I've had an opportunity to talk with several Vol fans and I can say at this point they are definitely nervous about our game. At least according to them it has nothing to do with the schedule making this a "trap" game. It all boils down to the physical nature of the Hogs play. They envision a situation where they get into a very physical, pounding offense and defense being put up by Arkansas. They're concerned that such an approach will begin to wear on them as the game goes on and by the end of the game their tongues are hanging out and they're too sore to move. Personally I think it should be an intriguing and competitive matchup.

I don't think it is going to be an "easy" game and if Butch Jones is going to help them turn the corner, this would be a good time to do it given that they return 20 in their two-deep on both offense and defense.

One thing that they have to overcome is scoring more TD's when they get in the RZ than they did last year. Oh, they had a good RZ conversion % last year coming second in the SEC at 92.6% behind league leading Missouri at 93.3%, but that is deceiving given that out of 54 trips to the RZ last year, 33 were TD's and 17 were FG's. With fewer offensive drives last season Arkansas entered the RZ 56 times gaining TD's 36 times and scored FG's 8 times, and there probably could have been more had we not been so insistent on pounding the rock into the EZ.

Yet Tennessee only averaged 21.7 offensive points per game in the RZ compared to our 21.2 points. Tennessee also leaned on 7.2 non-RZ points and we, with a less than dynamic and effective passing game at times, managed to score an average 10.7 non-RZ points per game LY. I expect that number to go up for us this season, but Tennessee's might also.

The Tennessee game should be a good game and I am sure that there may be at least one record set that day, the number of times that they play "Rocky Top" in Neyland.

There's a thread on secrant today asking everyone to rank the difficulty of games on their schedules.  I was surprised by how many people had Arkansas ranked high.  The average was probably in the 3-4th spot, with some ranking us higher, but few ranking us much lower.

BatesvilleHOG

The Vols have a stout DL, one star at the corner, two big talented receivers, and a slippery que ball of a QB with no eye brows.

I no scare.

Should be a very competitive game but I just don't think there is a single team on our schedule who can stop our offense for 4 quarters except us. We should win the game but of course the Vols will be the favorites, especially if they beat Bama the week before. Both teams could potentially be 5-0 going into Knoxville so this is definitely one of our biggest games this season. Could also see a possible rematch in Atlanta. I will definitely be in Knoxville for this one.

It's not Alabama, but Florida.  They play us between Florida and Georgia, then get an open date before Alabama.  I'd love to think that they might be overlooking us, but I doubt that happens.

regi

They should be concerned about Arkansas. They have a lot of questions on defense, I think they are a little over valued. UGA and Mizzou will finish ahead of them again, and Mizzou may only have 7 consensus 4 or 5 Star players on the team. Total.

That clears that up, didn't think You would mean the other. Don't be so defensive, I asked because I was giving you the benefit of a doubt

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound that way, Lefty. My apologies.

Don't apologize, just making my intentions clear. I respect your opinion

Losing gracefully isn't taught in second-tier programs. See Arkansas, Cincinnati, et al.

Honest question.   Am I the only one that reads the thread and then posts (with a few rare exceptions)?

So everyone one of the nationalized incidents were justified? There is no race problems with policing? If that is what you believe.....well bless your heart, it must be hard going through life with the obstacles you must have to overcome. Do they send a bus to come pick you up?

Depends on the length of the thread.  If it's really long, I won't bother reading through it all, because I know most of it will have nothing to do with the topic.  I try to read threads all the way through, though.

and so it begins, the inferiority complex begins to creep into the back of Razorback fans minds...its the Vols, 'oh my God' and they have Butch Jones and a quarterback, some kid named Dobbs who had a few good games at the end of last season... yet we Razorback fans can't seem to really have faith in what we did the whole of last season....we beat ourselves, literally in two games and we have a 5th year QB returning along with the best tandem RB's in the conference, maybe the nation and without a doubt, the most dominant OL in the SEC....yet, the doubt creeps in like the moonlight through a crack in the roof...oh, its there and its as though we embrace low expectations, after all, no one really gets hurt that badly when you don't allow yourself to really believe the Hogs can be THAT team....yes, THAT team which has a magical season...its happened to lesser, it can happen to us...thanks for analyzing the game, but I see the Vols as just another win for us on our way to knocking that door down

No, as I said above, those folks don't need anything positive to happen in order to break out into that song. Crap, seems as if they play that doggone song a million times.

Man, isn't that the truth!!  I want the seven points any way we can get it.  I never did understand why Chaney was so insistent on pounding the rock three or four times in a row from the one yard line.

I look forward to Enos offense and I suspect his approach will be to take what the defense gives us.

There's a thread on secrant today asking everyone to rank the difficulty of games on their schedules.  I was surprised by how many people had Arkansas ranked high.  The average was probably in the 3-4th spot, with some ranking us higher, but few ranking us much lower.

This is the first year I have ever heard so many opposing fans express concern about playing the Hogs.  On the Finebaum show the other day an Alabama fan called in and said he expects Bama to go 11-1 with their only loss coming from Arkansas in their Homecoming game.

When the physical nature of your team's play puts fear in the minds of your opponents your doing a lot of things right and Bielema is only going to be in his third year.  I can only dream of how good we might be, year after year, once he gets his production line working at full capacity.

UT and OU....I would not attend that game, matter of fact if I do watch it, the sound will be muted...the OU band plays one song,  "Boomer Sooner", and the UT fans won't allow their band to play anything but the "Rocky Top" sing a long....if, by the end of the game hearing those two songs dozens upon dozens of times isn't enough to run you "bat shiod" crazy, you have a greater tolerance for pain than I

for all of you guys worried about UT....this song has been a standing pre-season tradition for all the new incoming freshman to perform in order to get used to the "special ways" they have on ol' ROCKY TOP....

Fans fear, players have developed respect. The Alabama players won't "fear" us, but they will have more respect for us than they have probably had in a few years.

Guerry Clegg: SEC West still best, but the East is picking up steam

Quote• Tennessee will have a break-through season.

Despite having their first winning season since 2009 -- and that was just 7-6 -- the Volunteers have been picked to as a preseason Top 25 team.

Totally buying.

It would not surprise me even mildly if the Volunteers win the East. The Vols were two plays away from finishing 9-4 last season, losing by three to Georgia and by one to Florida. They also lost by eight to Missouri, so that's a touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Tennessee's top 25 players are good enough to contend for a championship. The Vols, like most rebuilding programs, have lacked depth. But Butch Jones hauled in another excellent signing class. Now, rather than being counted on to come in and start, these freshmen can come in and contribute as valuable backups, and push the starters to work harder if they want to keep their jobs.

If Josh Dobbs plays to his potential at quarterback, this could be a very dangerous team.

I said fewest times meaning the day would not be a good one for them to celebrate so thus they would be playing it less than normal. Get it?

SEC program on the rise: Tennessee http://es.pn/1H8OVVz

QuoteIt's not just that Jones is guiding the program with a steady hand, providing Tennessee's first legitimate coaching stability since the days of Phil Fulmer. It's not just that the Vols play in the SEC East, which is a much easier division to win than the difficult West. And it's not just that Jones' staff is recruiting at a high level, inking back-to-back top-five classes in 2014 and 2015.

Although Tennessee still had some major holes to fill -- for one thing, the Vols broke in an entirely new starting offensive line in 2014 -- both of those embarrassing trends ended last fall. Tennessee won four of its last five games, including a thrilling overtime victory against South Carolina and an impressive bowl win over Iowa, to finish at 7-6.

Now the Vols are getting some preseason attention as dark-horse candidates to win the East this fall...
