It was not a great year to be in the market for a big-time college basketball coach.

It's no longer as simple for athletic directors at big-time schools to wink at the stars from the next-tier leagues and flash their fat wallets. Because if those stars really are stars, they're already being well-paid by the programs where they work. They're already rich. Do they want to get richer? Sure. But they're willing to wait until the choicest programs experience turnover for whatever reason — the need for change, a coach heading to the NBA, maybe even a superstar retiring — and get richer there.

So the college coaching carousel felt more like one of those quick-drop amusement rides this spring. The fans' hopes gradually get built up as the vehicle climbs toward the top of the pole, slowly, slowly and —

St. John's and associate head coach Barry "Slice" Rohrssen (Glengarry Glen Ross) are finalizing a buyout agreement and will soon part ways, multiple sources told SNY.tv.

After leaving John Calipari's staff at Kentucky to return to his native New York for the 2015-16 season, Rohrssen served under first year coach and close friend Chris Mullin when the Red Storm finished 8-24, 1-17 in the Big East. Rohrssen had several years left on his contract.

"He definitely will not be back at St. John's next year," one source said.

Both sides declined comment for this story.

It remains unclear exactly what happened...

Rohrssen has also served as both the head coach at Manhattan and an assistant under both Ben Howland and Jamie Dixon at Pitt.
