Who said anything about hiring Hermann? For all we know he may be just another flash in the pan.

One thing is for sure, fatboy has underachieved here and I don't see that trend changing this year. Line up and take shots if you will, but it isn't going to happen.

And just to piss you guys off more, give Bobby Petrino last year's roster and he wins 10-11 games no problem.

Hey, the first 2 paragraphs may prove true, but the 3rd is epic comedy.  And I'm one of the few who think BP is an excellent coach.

And, seriously, can someone tell me how/why they were ranked?

Texas will be just fine in the Big 12...

They gave up 51 to a bad Big 10 offense...they may give up 90 to someone.

Why does anyone expect Herman to do great year one?  He's coaching a completely different style than strong.  This will probably be like CBP's first year here.  Probably 5-7 and, if he's truly capable, they'll be showing flashes late in the year with a solid, but unremarkable season next year.

5-7 each of the past two seasons. No real reason to expect this year to be any different. The fact they are top 25 is exactly why preseason polls are a joke.

i literally laughed at this when i saw it; the ranking, i mean. i'd love to meet the UT publicist.

As long as they score 91!!  :)

Besides, most in the Big 12 can't play the defense Maryland did.

That being said, I hope Texas continues their streak!!

Maryland wasn't a good defense, either, though.   They're about average from a B12 standpoint, and a bottom level defense in any other P5 league.

Sumlin got hired out of the University of Houston and that hire has not worked out real well for Texas A&M.

Herman gets hired out of UH, and loses his first game as Texas' Head Coach.

Briles, who got hired out of UH did win some games at Baylor, but he made the Baylor football program an unlawful cesspool.

A pattern may be developing that larger programs shouldn't be hiring a Head Coach from UH.

Not at all.  They still have to take down Jackson State, and the rankings have to be sussed out after.

He wouldn't have lost to A&M, Mizzou, or VaTech. Just a thought. Besides, what he does at Louisville is pretty irrelevant here. I just know what he did when he was our coach, and he could take a clipboard and beat the hell out of you way more often than not. Our present coach seems to recruit well and everyone likes him.but that is about it.

These are futile comparisons.  Simply not apples to apples.  But I agree, BP is a better x/o and game day guy than BB... it's not even close.  But BB is a cleaner, more respectable, more stabilizing guy...better recruiter.  I don't think BP was going to stick around much longer anyway.  In the end I think BP outperforms BB had he stayed this long.

Doesn't matter, though, because BB is the HC, and I seriously don't think we will do better than him.

Sigh. We would be playing with poor players with poor coaches and an offensive genius. There is a reason he has never lasted through year 5...anywhere.

because of )their name and the aura of Tom Herman and what he did at Houston. Herman may be a really good coach, but he is completely opposite of what TEX is used to.  TEX fans want good defense and ball control, running offense.  Basically they want......Saban.   Herman is offense offense offense, run a play, run a play, run a play and simply outscore the other side.

TEX fans are going to have to change their perspective cause Herman is nothing like what they are used to (back when they were winning like under Mack Brown).   When I think of TEX I just dont think of some gimmick offense and some Oregon hybrid team that just wants to outscore you.  It was weird to watch them today.   They really want what Saban brings to the table but Saban woudnt come there so they went after the flavor of the month in Herman.

Charley Strong was most likely on the right track to getting TEX what they want but the T-sippers were just not patient enough and when Herman came available, they felt they had to go after him or he might go to LSU.

The_Bionic_Pig

How did this thread go from Texas Sucks to a Love/Hate BP debate???

BP is a Offensive Genius but has very heavy input on Defense.

Nick Sabin is a Defensive Genius but has a very heavy influence on Offensive playcalling.

Brett is reminiscent of Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer (without the top 3-5 Recruiting classes) both former Offensive Lineman. Both rely heavily on their Coordinators to do their jobs micromanaging them.

But still are very much hands on.

All 3 have been very successful although BB has never had a top 15 Recruiting class (unlike the other 2)
