Column: The Lakers education of Julius Randle, with Kobe Bryant and Metta World Peace presiding. http://yhoo.it/1KCBklV

QuoteRandle is forever grateful about the way his boyhood idol climbed down from the posters on his bedroom and into his basketball life.

"The biggest person to help get me through this was Kobe – by far," Randle says.

Suddenly, everything had come to a crashing stop for Julius Randle, a McDonald's All-America who had fast-tracked through a teenager's trifecta fantasy: Kentucky, the draft lottery and the Lakers. He loves L.A., the sun, the surf, the glamour franchise that every young star believes can make them a transcendent star. And then on opening night, Randle heard the crack of his bone and crumpled to the court.

After losing his entire rookie season to that fractured tibia in his right leg –

Gator great Neal Walk dies at 67 - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20151005/ARTICLES/151009855 ...

Quote

Neal Walk, Florida's first college basketball star and highest-drafted player in school history, died Sunday night at a Phoenix hospital at 67.

Walk had been battling a blood disease on and off for seven months, according to close friend and former teammate Kurt Feazel.

A skilled, 6-foot-10 center, Walk was the first All-American basketball player in UF history. He finished his Florida career from 1966-69 with 1,600 points, which still ranks eighth on the all-time school scoring list. Walk averaged 20.8 points and 15.3 rebounds in his three seasons.

"He was a skinny kid, and he worked hard to become the best player in school history," said Feazel, who roomed with Walk at UF. "Off the court, he was like a brother to me. We were friends for 50 years and when we talked on the phone, he would call me brother."

Walk was taken second overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1969 NBA draft behind future Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

No Florida player has been taken as the first overall.

... || To former UK stars Anthony Davis, Cauley-Stein, return to Rupp for NBA exhibition feels like home: http://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/college/kentucky/2015/10/17/nba-cats-relish-return-rupp-arena/74129610/ ...

QuoteLEXINGTON, Ky. – Anthony Davis was only at the University of Kentucky for a year, hasn't lived here since the spring of 2012, but every time he's returned – for alumni games or, as was the case Saturday, an NBA exhibition at Rupp Arena – it's like he's coming home.

"It feels amazing, just brings back memories of when I played here," Davis said before his New Orleans Pelicans played the Sacramento Kings and former Wildcats stars DeMarcus Cousins, Willie Cauley-Stein and Rajon Rondo. "It's just amazing to realize the fan base that Kentucky has behind you. Whether you're in the league or you're playing here, they're still going to support you no matter what.

"Coach Cal don't hold that much weight around here anymore," Davis joked. "It just shows that I got much more power than Coach Cal."

Dean of SEC Beat Writers: One man, one vote

Southeastern Conference will announce its pre-season awards this week. Media vote for an all-league team, Player of the Year and predicted order of finish.

Here's my ballot:

QuoteAll-SEC team:

Guard — Tyler Ulis, Kentucky

Guard — Danuel House, Texas A&M

Forward — Ben Simmons, LSU

Forward — Skal Labissiere, Kentucky

Center — Damian Jones, Vanderbilt

Comment: The thought of all freshmen on the All-SEC team seems plausible. It appeals to the revolutionary in any voter. Say, Labissiere, Simmons, Jamal Murray (UK), Malik Newman (Mississippi State) and Antonio Blakeney (LSU). But how can you leave off the league's best point guard in Ulis, a physical/experienced talent in House and the steady/productive big man in Jones? Apologies to Ole Miss guard Stefan Moody (the league's most entertaining player), A&M glue-guy Alex Caruso, Vandy guard Riley LaChance, Florida forward Dorian Finney-Smith and Georgia guard tandem of Kenny Gaines and Charles Mann.

Player of the Year:

Tyler Ulis, Kentucky

Comment: As former UK star Sam Bowie once observed, a great big horse is better than a great little horse.

One observation from SEC-Media Day? It's ridiculous that UK's Jamal Murray wasn't on league's 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team. BUCKET GETTER. #BBN Observations @CBSSports: http://cbsprt.co/1OUKAXD  #BBN

QuoteJamal Murray, a 6-foot-5 freshman guard, was a late addition for John Calipari's squad and he may turn out to be the Wildcats' most important player in 2015-16. While the college basketball world waits on word from the NCAA in regards to the eligibility of freshman big man Skal Labissiere for the upcoming season, Murray continues to dazzle Kentucky's staff on a daily basis with his ability to put the ball in the basket.

The Wildcats return several key pieces -- Tyler Ulis, Alex Poythress, and Marcus Lee -- that have doses of collegiate experience, but none of those guys is a proven double-figure scorer.

In assessing how good former Kentucky All-American Anthony Davis can be, his NBA coach suggested historically good.

Quote"Obviously, I think he can be one of the all-time great players who've ever played in this league," New Orleans Coach Alvin Gentry said before the Pelicans played the Sacramento Kings last weekend in Rupp Arena.

Gentry cited Davis' size (listed at 6-foot-10) and speed (relative to other players of his size), plus one other less-obvious attribute.

"His knowledge of the game," Gentry said. "That's where people really don't understand. He's got a really good knowledge of the game for a 22-year-old."

It's easy to forget that Davis is 22 and would be an NBA rookie if all college players stayed in school four years.

Gentry mentioned another intangible.

"He's just all about the team," he said of Davis. "He's all about winning. Usually with the great ones, that's the first thing they think about: the team.

"When you add all those things together, barring an injury, he can be one of the best all-time great players to ever play this game."

Rajon Rondo, arguably the least appreciated former great Kentucky player, is enjoying something of a renaissance this NBA season.

Quotehe was leading the league in assists (10.8 per game). This after being traded by Boston, banished by Dallas and generally considered an undesirable within the last year.

Rondo signed a one-year, $9.5 million contract with Sacramento. Speculation quickly followed that he would clash with Coach George Karl. That hasn't happened, as Karl suggested when the Kings played an exhibition game in Rupp Arena.

"It's pretty much fun watching him recreate his career a little bit," Karl said last week. "He's kind of seized the moment and played at a high, high level. I really enjoy coaching him."

"I'm more so into reading now," Rondo said.
