Tennessee fired head football coach Butch Jones on Sunday, a day after a 50-17 loss to Missouri dropped the Volunteers to 0-6 in SEC play this season

Brady Hoke has been installed as interim coach, but who might the Volunteers pursue to be Jones' permanent replacement?

Tennessee has issues in terms of recruiting base, but still has plenty of tradition, a willingness to spend money on coaches and a fan base starved for a winner

Here are coaches who could be on the Volunteers' list:

QuoteJon Gruden, TV analyst/former NFL coach
Gruden has been the dream candidate in Knoxville for years, primarily because he has ties to Tennessee as a former graduate assistant coach, the husband of a former Vols cheerleader and the father of a current UT student. And he's still only 53. But Gruden's been out of coaching for nine years and makes $6 million per year on Monday Night Football, so would he really give up his current lifestyle to return to the sideline?

Coaching Rumors: Tennessee coaching search may be 'over' with announcement looming http://sec.news/2A7Hznk   #VFL

QuoteIf this proves to be accurate, it may mean that the person involved has had time to finish out their regular season with the team they're working with now.

Speculation on a name for such a report doesn't seem fair.

Tennessee fans have been longing for Jon Gruden, but his name has fallen into the background in recent days. SEC Country's Mike Griffith has zeroed in on Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, Duke coach David Cutcliffe and Washington State coach Mike Leach as contenders for the position.

Tennessee's season came to a close on Saturday after a 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt at Neyland Stadium on Saturday.

QuotePer Chris Low, Tennessee has settled on Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and Iowa State coach Matt Campbell as the top 3 candidates. Low, appearing on SportsCenter this morning,  also added that he expects the school to name a coach in the next 48 hours.

If the reports about Schiano being aware of Sandusky being a pedophile and keeping quiet about it are true - good for the Tenner fan base.
I wouldn't want him, either.

Report: Greg Schiano seeking buyout from Tennessee after deal falls through http://sec.news/2AbAIJw   #VFL

QuoteThat would be virtually unprecedented in terms of coaching searches, but so was the backlash that Tennessee fans unleashed after the news of Schiano's hiring leaked on Sunday.

There were complaints and threats from fans, former players, media and even members of the state government. There was one particularly pointed protest to Schiano's hiring, referencing the Schiano's alleged knowledge of the Jerry Sandusky scandal when he worked for Penn State from 1991-95.

Tennessee's coaching search will march on from here.

It is interesting to see moral outrage from UT fans about Schiano/Sandusky. Where was that outrage when Butch Jones was accused of overseeing a culture that led to multiple sexual assaults? I'm sure the fact UT football was looking up when suit hit had nothing to do with it.

Heard that UT is also over trying to convince the current NC State coach, Dave Doeren, to uproot and move southwest to Knoxville. Also understand that in reaction to such a possible move more than a few NC State fans aren't exactly unhappy with the courting and wouldn't exactly be going into mourning if ole DD flew the coup.

The wheels continue to grind on and on in Knoxville. What are they down to by now: something like their 10th choice. Gee, perhaps Tenny isn't quite as plum job that many over there think. Perhaps the most delusional fan base in America right now.

Man, talk about a total cluster....You supposedly make an offer only to have to rescind and amend. Yep, that really looks good considering what happened over the weekend with the original "hire". Does ANYONE know what the heck they're doing over in Knoxville ??? However, I do have to readily admit I could care less; keep the idiocy going for a while longer so we can all continue to get our giggles and grins over the whole confused mess.  :) 8)

AM | Where has Tennessee's crazy coaching search turned?

To Baton Rouge, where former #LSU coach Les Miles resides, per @GrantRamey.

A late-night text from Les, too.

QuoteNew UT athletic director Phillip Fulmer has contacted Miles about the open job in Knoxville, Tennessee, 247Sports.com reported on Saturday evening.

Miles texted The Advocate in response to the report: "No real news!!" it said.

Miles would likely be interested in the position. The 64-year-old is hungry to return to coaching, something he's stressed since LSU fired him last September after 12 years in Baton Rouge. He still lives in the city, recently selling his home and purchasing a new one.

Miles is the latest name to surface in a coaching search that's resulted in a fired AD - UT replaced John Currie with Fulmer earlier this week - and a host of rejections, from Purdue's Jeff Brohm to NC State's Dave Doeren, among others. 247Sports also reported that speculation remains that USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin, a former Vols quarterback, would be open to joining Tennessee's staff as a coordinator and associate head coach.

Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, who held the same position in 2015 at LSU, and former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin have also been rumored as candidates for the gig. Tennessee fired Butch Jones 10 games into the 2017 season, making a change after a five-year run that produced a 14-24 SEC record.

Miles won two SEC championships and a national title during his time at LSU. The school still owes him about $8 million, delivering it in monthly payments for the next five years as part of his buyout of a contract he signed after the 2012 season. The buyout is mitigated based on his future pay.

Miles has not hidden his wish to return to coaching. He last interviewed for the Minnesota opening in January and was, reportedly, a candidate at Houston and South Florida last year.

.@DavidBazzel just addressed Kevin Steele's absence from Broyles Award presentation

QuoteAuburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele missed the events for the Broyles Award on Monday and Tuesday, including the presentation of the award, because he was in New York interviewing for the head coaching job at Tennessee, a source confirmed.

AL.com reported Steele was a candidate for the head coaching job at Tennessee last week and a source confirmed he met with Volunteers athletic director Phillip Fulmer on Sunday and interviewed with Tennessee officials in New York on Tuesday.

ESPN reported Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker was also in New York interviewing with Fulmer, who is in town for the National Football Foundation's annual awards and induction of Peyton Manning into the College Football Hall of Fame, for a second time.

Steele, who was a first-time finalist for the Broyles Award, was not introduced with the other finalists in Little Rock, Ark. on Tuesday and missed a dinner with the finalists Monday night.

"He had some conflicts with, I just presume maybe some future job opportunities, and so Kevin could not be here today," David Bazzel of the Broyles Award said Tuesday. "He regrets it and he hates it, but we understand and coach Broyles would understand. We wish him the best he had an unbelievable year this year."

Greg Schiano was to make $27 million as coach at Tennessee

QuoteFOIA: Greg Schiano was set to be paid $4.5 million a year as the head coach at Tennessee, according to a memorandum of understanding.

Suspended athletic director John Currie was the only Tennessee official, however, to sign the memorandum of understanding.

Tennessee chancellor Beverly Davenport or Tennessee Chief Financial Officer David Miller did not sign it.

"Tennessee believes the absence of their signatures makes the MOU a non-binding legal document and thus off the hook for any compensation to Schiano."
