It's not crazy to say Mizzou has the SEC's top-2 Heisman Trophy contenders right now with Brady Cook and Luther Burden, right? Right?

I think that's entirely fair to say right now. Of course, I wouldn't go as far as to say either of them are atop the Heisman rankings, as I think there are a handful of Pac-12 QBs currently leading that race.

But Burden is certainly in the driver's seat for the Biletnikoff Award at the moment. He has an SEC-best 43 catches for an SEC-best 644 yards and 5 touchdowns (tied for 4th in the SEC) through 5 games and has been absolutely electric with the ball in his hands.

Week 8 had plenty of noteworthy developments in the SEC

Mizzou — Luther Burden III is just fine
By my count, we've seen Burden leave a game banged up at least 4 times this year. It comes with the territory for a slot receiver who entered the weekend leading Power 5 in receptions. That included last week against Kentucky when he entered as the nation's leading receiver, but was held to just 2 catches for 15 yards. Well, he had more than double that with 1 highlight-reel touchdown grab in the middle of the first quarter on Saturday:

Georgia couldn't land Luther Burden III as a 5-star recruit, so can it corral him this time around?

When Kirby Smart hosts a 5-star recruit and that player commits to another program just days after a trip to Athens, it's noteworthy. It's the type of thing that makes even the non-recruiting-obsessed crowd step back and take note.

Well, Luther Burden III has been making everyone take note since the day that he committed to Mizzou.

Burden became Mizzou's 2nd-highest-rated recruit in the 247sports rankings era behind only Dorial Green-Beckham, who also opted to stay in-state as the nation's top receiver back in 2012. (OK, technically Burden was just across the river in East St. Louis, Illinois, but ...)

He stayed true to Mizzou, and Mizzou stayed true to him. Not only did Burden start from the jump as a true freshman, but ahead of his sophomore season, the Tigers moved the 5-11 wideout to his more natural position in the slot.

The question is no longer about whether Georgia will flip Burden or whether he can live up to the hype. It's whether the Dawgs can corral him this time and keep control of the SEC East.

Of course, by "corral," I mean in a football sense. Any world in which Mizzou goes into Athens and hands the Dawgs their first home loss since 2019 includes Burden giving Georgia even more "one that got away" vibes.

If Mizzou coach Eliah Drinkwitz is genuinely concerned about Luther Burden III's availability for the Tennessee game and not just showing some gamesmanship, that's a huge deal.

Mizzou's offense has plenty of good players, but it's only one got one of him.

Arkansas' announcement that Sam Pittman will be back in 2024 neutralized one of the major undercurrents of this matchup, but there are plenty more: Missouri's bid to clinch a spot in a New Year's 6 bowl; KJ Jefferson's future following what may or may not be his last game as a Razorback; Harrison Mevis' whole gestalt. As for me, I'll be tuning in Friday to watch Luther Burden III, because time flies, life is short, and opportunities to appreciate a talent like Burden's in a college uniform are fleeting. Sometimes it's good to remember all the other stuff is just the dressing, not the main course.

ESPN finally ranks top 10 wide receivers in college football

ESPN has finally decided to rank the best 10 wide receivers ahead of the 2024 college football season.

1. Luther Burden III (Missouri)


Missouri star takes the top spot after an absurdly productive sophomore season, posting 86 receptions for 1,212 total yards along with nine touchdowns as he was one of the stars on a Tiger team that really broke through under Drink.

Some of Burden's teammates will be different, but not quarterback Brady Cook, so you can see how Missouri might keep pace with the offensive production they got a year ago. If they do, it will be because Burden has elevated his game...
