Former Mississippi State wide receiver Chris Smith was shot and killed in Meridian on Friday night, coach Dan Mullen confirmed to The Clarion-Ledger. Meridian police chief Benny Dubose said the incident occurred at Frank Berry Courts on 8th Street, according to WTOK. Dubose didn't immediately return a call asking for confirmation.

Smith was 26 years old.

Smith played for Mississippi State from 2009 through 2012. The Meridian native caught 130 passes for 1,422 yards in his four years. He also scored six touchdowns.

Chris was an important part of our first recruiting class and helped set the foundation for our success. He was a terrific teammate and his work ethic was impeccable. He earned his way onto the field as a true freshmen in 2009 and later received his degree from Mississippi State. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends.

The man suspected of killing former Mississippi State wide receiver Chris Smith was taken into custody on Monday afternoon

Meridian (Miss.) Police Department Sgt. Dareall Thompson revealed that Tirale Reed, 25, was arrested in Marietta, Ga., on charges of murder, felony firearm possession and shooting into an occupied dwelling, according to The Clarion-Ledger's Therese Apel.

Smith, 26, was shot to death in Meridian on Friday night. How exactly the tragedy unfolded remains uncertain.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose says Tirale Reed, the suspect accused in the murder of former Meridian High and MSU football player Chris Smith has been taken into custody.

"The investigation and the interviews of witnesses indicated that he was involved in the incident and that he did fire a weapon that led to the death of Mr. Smith," MPD Chief Benny Dubose says.

After police issued warrants for Reed's arrest, Chief Dubose says investigators spoke to Reed's family about how to move forward.

"Family members indicated that he wanted to turn himself in, but didn't know exactly how," he says.

He says they spoke to Reed, himself, Monday afternoon, who told them he was in Marietta, Georgia. Police asked him to stay at a business there and wait for authorities to take him into custody.

"At that point, we contacted Marietta police, and they arrived and picked up Mr. Reed without incident," the chief says.
