Both football and baseball programs in the SEC beat up on each other during regular-season league play. The difference is the College Football Playoff has room for a scant four teams, the NCAA baseball tournament clears space for 64.

It's why all seven of the conference teams in the current top 12 own a legitimate chance to make the eight-team College World Series in Omaha, Neb. For instance, last season four of the eight CWS teams represented the SEC, with Virginia edging the SEC's Vanderbilt in the championship series.

NCAA announced the 16 host sites for next weekend's college baseball tournament which included the Bulldogs and the Rebels for the first time in the same year.

MSU will host a regional for the first time since 2013, when it advanced to the College World Series. Ole Miss hosted the next season in 2014 and also advanced to Omaha, Nebraska as well. Southern Miss wasn't named as a regional host.

NCAA will release the eight national seeds on Monday at 11 a.m. Mississippi State has never earned a national seed, but hosted the 2007 Super Regionals. Ole Miss last earned a national seed in 2009.

Over the final weeks of the University of Alabama baseball season, you could sense an edge of frustration in Mitch Gaspard's voice.

With most head coaches, that would hardly register. Big-time college athletics is a frustrating endeavor and baseball — where a championship team can easily lose 25 percent of the time — is especially so. With Gaspard, though, such responses were rare enough to notice. He never raised his voice or ranted. No podium met an untimely demise. He unfailingly answered any question, just as he always had. But it was clear that something was on his mind, even as he tried to maneuver a team that had been picked to finish 13th in a voracious 14-team league into an NCAA Tournament bid.

Now, we know what he was thinking.
