RB Strong, WR Ballard won't be at Mizzou this fall

QuoteStrong, a running back from East St. Louis, has spent the last year and a half at Hinds, Miss., Community College and hoped to enroll at Mizzou in time to play this season. But he's expected to need another semester of junior college course work this fall and won't be at Mizzou until January 2017...

Ballard, a standout wide receiver from McCluer North, also isn't expected at Mizzou this fall, a source confirmed. Ballard was a late addition to MU's 2016 recruiting class, signing with the Tigers April 1.

"All the big schools knew I had a grade problem and then backed off," he said in February. "So I sat back and watched to see who still recruited me knowing it would all pay off in the end. When my senior year came around, everybody started coming back slowly, like Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, all the big schools. I looked at them like, you didn't believe in me, so why should I believe in you? Mizzou was recruiting me through thick and thin, so I made my commitment to Missouri."

If Ballard attends junior college for two years, he could re-sign with Missouri in 2018.

QuotePadres drafted wide receiver and outfielder A.J. Brown in the 19th round. The true freshman out of Starkville has already enrolled at Ole Miss, where he plans to play baseball and football. If he signed with the Padres, he'd still be eligible to play football for the Rebels but not baseball. The four-star football signee was ranked the No. 5 wide receiver and No 38 player overall...

#LSU DE Sione Teuhema missing from roster, but remains in "limbo"; Jake Clise, Miquel James gone; Frosh jersey #s http://bit.ly/28JOOBn

QuoteDefensive end Sione Teuhema, a rising junior, was not listed on LSU's updated roster released Monday, but team spokesman Michael Bonnette said Teuhema's situation remains "in limbo."

Walk-on quarterback Jake Clise and walk-on running back Miquel James were also not listed on the roster, and both appear to have left the program.

A part of LSU's 2014 signing class, Teuhema was suspended a month into spring practice for unknown reasons. Coach Les Miles said then that he's unsure "the suspension will conclude ever."  A month ago the coach said he hadn't made a decision on the rising junior's future. Teuhema will "make" the decision for himself, Miles said then, by taking a class this summer.

Teuhema had participated in the first month of spring drills before Miles announced the suspension on April 9. It's Teuhema's second suspension in the calendar year.

During spring practice, Teuhema was moved to the Buck position, an outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid role in LSU's new 3-4 defense. He was playing behind starter Arden Key, along with Isaiah Washington. It's a "natural position" for Teuhema, defensive line coach Ed Orgeron said before his suspension.

Sione is the brother to LSU starting offensive lineman Maea Teuhema. The Texas natives signed with LSU a year apart. Maea is a 2015 signee who started as a true freshman last year.

Clise, fourth or fifth in the QB pecking order last year, joined the University of Richmond in January, according to richmond.com. James was a walk-on from Kentwood who played in one game of his career against New Mexico State in 2014, running for 24 yards on two carries in that game.

QuoteGeorgia freshman defensive back Chad Clay has been dismissed from the team following a second arrest in less than three months.

Clay was booked into the Athens-Clarke County Jail Wednesday on a charge of theft by taking and released a short time on $1,500 bond...

"Unfortunately, Chad will no longer be a part of our football program," Smart said, via DawgNation.com. "It is very disappointing, and we wish him the best in his efforts to continue his education."

It was the second arrest in less than three months for Clay, who was also arrested April 12 along with fellow freshman Julian Rochester after being charged with discharging a BB gun in their dorm room. The two were charged with two felonies in that still-pending case...

.@mzenitz analyzes the impact of two recent transfers on the Crimson Tide's secondary: http://trib.al/X3Oyz2A

QuoteNick Saban wasn't expecting Maurice Smith to transfer.

The senior defensive back was Alabama's first-team nickel back during the Tide's spring game in April and was the favorite to win the starting nickel back job entering fall camp. So, according to a source, Saban was surprised when Smith asked to be released from his scholarship earlier this month.

Alabama was already thinner depth-wise at safety following the departure of sophomore Shawn Burgess-Becker. Losing Smith makes the Tide even thinner. It also leaves Alabama dependent on some inexperienced defensive backs to play roles they may not have played with Smith on the team.

When the Tide was in its nickel defense during the spring game, which was most of the time, Marlon Humphrey and Minkah Fitzpatrick were the two outside cornerbacks. Smith was the nickel, playing inside, covering slot receivers and tight ends, blitzing, defending the run and taking care of the other responsibilities that come along with being Alabama's nickel back.

With Smith gone, the Tide may have to move Fitzpatrick inside to play nickel back when it goes into its nickel and dime defenses.

The reason: Alabama looks for its nickel back to have both cornerback and safety characteristics. You need to be able to cover, ideally have decent size, have to hold up against the run, need to be an aggressive outside blitzer and have to understand and be able to play zone coverage.

There are limited options on the roster with Smith gone, especially with junior cornerback Tony Brown, the second-team nickel back during the spring game, facing a suspension that would sideline him for part of the season.

Former North Carolina RB Ty'Son Williams accepted into school at South Carolina, decision forthcoming

Quote"I was accepted for the fall," he told SEC Country.

Williams has yet to make up his mind if he'll join the Gamecocks as a walk-on running back. He'll do so "if everything goes good."

Since Williams has been accepted by the university, he's now permitted to speak with Will Muschamp. Because they weren't permitted to speak before Tuesday, Williams would like to hear what the head coach has to say before he reaches a decision.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, no meeting had been scheduled. But that's not the only item on the docket. Williams would also like to iron out a few details with the university.

Since South Carolina and North Carolina are scheduled to play in 2019, the fifth and final year of Williams' eligibility, he would initially join the Gamecocks as a walk-on.

Georgia State and Appalachian State are also under consideration.

Georgia preseason depth chart preview: Offensive line

https://www.dawgnation.com/football/georgia-preseason-depth-chart-preview-offensive-line

QuoteSmart: "I think the toughest job is staying injury free and trying to find eight guys, nine guys to rotate in there."

The question now is where everybody goes. Brandon Kublanow, the only senior returning starter, is also the only one who, barring something cataclysmic, will have a definite position: Center.

Every other spot could see some movement before the North Carolina game. The coaches have a set lineup they'll come out with on the first day of preseason practice, but there will be a month, especially the first two scrimmages, to see if there should be tinkering.

"I'm sure some things will move," Kublanow said. "That's how it always is in fall camp, you've got guys shuffling everywhere."

Still, Georgia's offensive line – at least as far as who will be out there for the opener – offers a lot more certainty than the rest of the skill [sic] position [sic].

QuoteLSU returns more starters (18 of a possible 22) than all but three of the 128 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, according to figures compiled by Phil Steele. When it comes to returning starters, the Tigers are tied for the most in college football. Wyoming, Louisville and Kent State.

Defensively, LSU returns nearly 80 percent of its tackles and 82 percent of its sacks. On offense, the Tigers return 100 percent of their passing yards, passing touchdowns and receiving touchdowns. They get back 99.5 percent of their rushing yards and 89.4 percent of their receiving yards.

But, oh, what about those new guys, right? Who replaces the four spots vacated by Jerald Hawkins (left tackle), Jones (linebacker), Vadal Alexander (right tackle) and Jalen Mills (safety)?

In Dave Aranda's 3-4 defense that's referred to as the "Rover," similar to a weakside linebacker, the spot Jones played last season expect stiff competition from a player coaches are high on – Devin White, a 6-1, 255-pound true freshman from Springhill –

LSU freshman Caleb Roddy moving to TE

QuoteRoddy, a 3-star defensive end from Denham Springs (La.) High School, will spend his freshman season playing tight end.

The 6-foot-5, 275-pound freshman was listed as the No. 19 strong-side defensive end in the 2015 recruiting class, but largely fits the bill as a run-stopper in a 4-3 defense. Instead of shifting outside to linebacker or putting on weight to play up front in the 3-4 front, Roddy will add some much-needed depth to a tight end corps headlined by starter Colin Jeter, Desean Smith, Foster Moreau and Jacory Washington.

Sumlin, entering his fifth season at A&M, gave a preview the upcoming season and update any goings-on with his roster

QuoteSumlin said freshman defensive end Alton Robinson has been released from his scholarship to pursue other opportunities. Robinson, a former Converse Judson star, never reported to the A&M campus this summer. Camp starts Monday.

Robinson was arrested in Bexar County last February on charges of felony robbery, after police said he stole his ex-girlfriend's purse by ripping it off her shoulder. Sumlin said A&M released Robinson from his scholarship because his "legal issues were not resolved."

The official word from Bexar County District Attorney's Office on Thursday: "The case is currently under review."

Freshman receiver Quartney Davis of Langham Creek has undergone surgery for a torn ACL and will redshirt this season, Sumlin said. Receiver is one of the team's deepest positions.

Freshman defensive tackle T.D. Moton of Shreveport has been cleared to play at A&M and will report on Friday, a pleased Sumlin announced. Moton has been fighting for nearly two years to gain entrance academically to A&M, and defensive tackle is a position of need for the Aggies.

Freshman running back Rakeem Boyd of Stratford is still going through the NCAA clearinghouse to try and gain admittance to A&M, Sumlin said.

Sumlin described last week's controversy at a "Chalk Talk for Women" as a "learning experience" for all involved. A risqué presentation loaded with sexual innuendo before about 700 women led to two-week suspensions for offensive line coach Jim Turner and special teams/tight ends coach Jeff Banks. Sumlin said other assistants will handle those duties the first week of camp, in the duo's absence.

Florida OL Antonio Riles suffers potential season-ending injury

Quote"Antonio Riles went down today with a leg," Florida head coach Jim McElwain said on Monday night. "I have no idea how serious it is."

Riles started the first six games last year for the Gators, and played in 11 total. The junior was expected to compete for one of the guard spots on the Florida line. Last year, Florida gave up the most sacks in the SEC.
