When the news broke Thursday afternoon that an NBA player - who is still playing - interviewed for the UAB head coaching job, it raised plenty of eyebrows.

But that's what Jason Terry, a 17-year NBA veteran, did, yesterday just hours before his game with the Houston Rockets against the Chicago Bulls, a 103-100 loss in Houston.

Terry interviewed with UAB athletics director Mark Ingram and others in the early afternoon before the evening game, where he scored three points in 18 minutes off the bench.

UAB is interviewing candidates in Houston, site of the Final Four, this weekend in the search to replace head coach Jerod Haase, who left for Stanford a week ago. Interim head coach Robert Ehsan interviewed earlier this week in Birmingham. Auburn assistant Chuck Person interviewed Thursday afternoon.

Terry confirmed the interview to ESPN after the game.

"It went well," Terry told ESPN. "UAB is in an interesting situation, the success they had, but Coach Haase's immediate departure left that job open. I have deep roots in the Birmingham community -- uncles, cousins, aunts -- and so I'm very familiar with the area. So we'll see what happens. It was a good meeting that I had."

Good news for Robert Ehsan meant that Jerod Haase has to do some more searching.

Haase had offered Ehsan the same position of associate head coach at Stanford, where Haase left UAB from on March 25 to take the head coaching spot.

But he also made clear his feelings on how the 33-year-old Ehsan should be his successor. After more than a week, Ehsan was promoted to the top spot officially on Monday.

"I couldn't be more excited," Haase said. "I'm fired up. It's not the best thing for me because having him at my side has enabled me to be successful and chase my dreams, but it's the best thing for him and I'm very happy for him."

Ehsan will be introduced at a press conference on Tuesday.

Tom Bowen met with Tigers basketball players Friday, he told them to trust him. The school will make a great hire in replacing Josh Pastner, Bowen assured them. And it's going to do it quickly, he said, using the same approach it did four months ago when it hired football coach Mike Norvell.

That search, which officially got underway on Nov. 29, was wrapped up in a tidy five days. It began with Bowen telling local media in a Sunday news conference that "urgency is a priority" and it ended four days later with Memphis drawing national praise for its hiring of a rising young star in the 34-year-old Norvell, who had been considered one of the nation's top offensive coordinators at Arizona State.

The U of M released an eight-paragraph statement announcing that it planned to use the same search advisory committee and follow the same procedures in replacing Pastner that it did in hiring Norvell four months ago.

Bowen said in the statement that he won't comment on the search until its conclusion. Rudd tweeted Saturday that he was unable to attend the Tigers' football scrimmage in Nashville "due to other commitments."

Was he meeting with a candidate for the job?

Rumors swirled for a short time on social media Saturday that Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall was in Memphis. But those reports went unconfirmed.

Memphis' top target remains a mystery. But that's not likely to remain the case much longer given how quickly the U of M has to move in replacing Pastner.

Beard took the UNLV job when it was the best job he could get. Then something happened that he couldn't have possibly predicted. Georgia Tech hired Josh Pastner. Then Memphis hired Tubby Smith. So now Texas Tech is open and interested. And Texas Tech is home. His daughters live in Texas. And Texas Tech has more money than UNLV, the latter of which is run by an AD who's future seems uncertain.

Simply put, Beard would be insane to not at least listen. And if he takes the job, I understand. He'd be doing what he thinks is best for him and his family at this moment. And how do you fault somebody for doing that?

Story: Now that most of the chairs in this season's game of coaching musical chairs are filled, here is one take on the winners and the losers:

WINNER: Vanderbilt. In landing Bryce Drew, Vandy appears to have won the coaching carousel lottery. Drew, 41, has five years of head-coaching experience, having led Valparaiso to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a runner-up finish in the 2016 NIT. Still famous for the 1998 NCAA tourney buzzer beater he hit as a Valpo player to beat Mississippi, Drew would seem to have the pizzazz to finally allow Vanderbilt, a "basketball school" that has never made a Final Four, to get to the proverbial "next level."

LOSER: Pittsburgh. The knock on Jamie Dixon in his 13 years as Panthers head man is that, in 11 NCAA Tournament trips, he only made it to the round of 16 three times with one Elite Eight. So Pitt's solution was to hire Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings — who in 17 years at Vandy, made it to the round of 16 twice.

LOSER: Georgia Tech. The Techsters fired Brian Gregory after the ex-Dayton head man concluded a 21-15 season. Tech then hired a coach, Josh Pastner, who went 19-15 this past year at Memphis.

WINNER: American Athletic Conference. The American — the football-playing remnants of the old Big East — has added an NCAA championship winner (Tubby Smith at Memphis), a longtime NBA head man (Mike Dunleavy Sr. at Tulane), and a coach who is genuine Duke royalty (Johnny Dawkins at Central Florida).

LOSER: UNLV.
