It is time to report about three JUCO players who have committed to Arkansas this month.

The first to commit is current Eastern Oklahoma State College SS Hunter Wilson.  From a story that I saw, he is from Spiro and grew up dreaming about playing at Baum Stadium as a Razorback.  Wilson transferred to JUCO from Stephen F. Austin this year.  In 2015, Wilson started 37 games for SFA with a triple slash of .252/.325/.333 so it appears he is more of a singles hitter at this time.

The next to commit is Iowa Western SS Jared Gates.  Gates triple slashed .400/.455/.578 last year although I do not know the competition he faced.  Still looks like an excellent pickup and could be Nomura's replacement at 2B depending on who does and who does not make it to campus.

Earlier today, Lamar CC C Jacob Giron committed.  Giron triple slashed .355/.429/.677 in limited PAs, but it appears he has some pop in his bat.

Bernal, Nomura, gassaway, and pennell will all be gone for sure. That's a lot to replace right there

I think that a couple or three pitchers (Tacco, Teague and Jackson especially), maybe Eagan, Shaddy and Bonfield could be added to that list (I think Bonfield is a draft eligible sophomore, someone correct me if I have uttered in error) if he/they have  breakout years.

I don't remember us recruiting this many shortstops ever like we have the last couple of recruiting classes?  Is it because we haven't had a top not SS in a while or is DVH trying to get more athletic by transitioning these shortstops to other positions?  We signed a bunch in '15 class and have several in the '16 class it seems.

Most HS INFs that are going D1 will typically play SS.  They could transfer to 2B or 3B at Arkansas.  That being said, Stobbe and Williams are two of the best SS that have committed to Arkansas in a long time.  I hope we get at least one if not both of them.  For as good as our program has been, we haven't really had that elite SS like other SEC programs.

But to your answer your question, I think it is due to the fact that we seem to be signing more position prospects in the past.  A lot of years, we would have more than enough depth on the mound, but if one of our starting 9 went down, we would struggle.  It looks like we are trying to change that and have a whole lot more depth on offense.

Perfect Game put on their Twitter that Matt Cronin was outstanding down at Jupiter.  He got upto 92 mph.  He pitched a complete game shutout

It just seems when DVH starts signing JUCO guys it is because some of the incoming freshmen have indicated they are leaning toward signing if they get drafted.

how many dont get to campus

Yeah... though it does seem like Arkansas has done a much better job the last few years of going after players in the 200-500 range who are likely to make it to campus instead of guys who never have a chance.

I would hate to be a college coach though, because the ranking/size/talent of a guy when you offer might be night and day at the draft a year and a half later.

Through the grapevine have heard Rortvedt the catcher goes pro. Unbelivable talent.
It will be hard to get he and Stobbe on campus because the MLB teams will want them badly

Per d1baseball:

Arkansas continues to rack up a deep 2017 crop, this time landing LHP Brady Disher. A two-way standout, Disher projects to hit for power from the left side and shows high upside on the mound.

Hogs have hit a wall at the wrong time of the season.  I will go on record now and say they may not even get out of their regional.  The hitting has been carrying them with a few good pitching outings but they just don't have the reliable pitching they need to get back to the CWS.

Greenwood RHP Connor Noland is visiting today.  We are his first SEC baseball offer.  A&m is his first SEC football offer.

Tortfeasor

A 2017 kid in TN was interested in the Hogs. He received several offers and committed to MS St this past summer. Fastball clocks around 92-93. May still have some interest in the Hogs.

Arkansas is all over Noland and 2018 LHP Evan Hiatt from LR Catholic.  Hiatt is the real deal and has several offers.  Hogs are also showing interest in 2018 LHP Kaleb Hill from Watson Chapel.  These three kids are high level pitchers all within the state and are all 2018s

Scott7703

There are multiple kids in greenbrier I wish our coaches could land. Both Wallace brothers are high end division one players and there is a lefty pitcher committed to miss st that I wish we could land.

Lefty already has Tommy John I believe. I wonder if that deterred DVH

2018 LHP Evan Hiatt from LR Catholic has committed to Arkansas this evening.  This kid projects to be a Friday night starter.  He is a couple of years away and I know some MLB scouts are on him but this is very good news for the future of the program.

Got to see him pitch when he was 13. Even at that tender age you didn't have to be an MLB scout to see that this kid was something special. Great velo and I mean a devastating change up. Got to wonder if he ever makes it to campus.
Leftys with a wicked change have always been money in college ball, I really, really hope this kid makes it to campus.

The younger Wallace is one of the best hitters in the country in 14u.

The 2018, 2019, and 2020 classes in AR are very, very deep.  2018 has top notch pitching.  2019 has position players and bats.  2020 has both.  I know these are young kids and years away but these kids do provide a good base for the future.

JHicks3636

The problem with getting too excited about baseball recruiting is the fact that so many go directly to pro ball. You never know what you really have until after the MLB draft each year.

PorkRyan

I guess DVH is changing his philosophy on recruiting the younger guys.  It is a sign of the times I guess.  We played a 14u tourney in Dallas last weekend and the team that won had two 8th graders already committed to Miami.

Kevin

I hope the draft does not kill this draft class.  We need some studs
