Pel didn't really get us to the tourney that year.  He accompanied  the team that Stan Heath built to the tourney.  I wasn't really a Heath fan but it did seem a bit unfair that he missed out on that.  If you don't believe me see what happened to Pel's teams in the years after.  Related to that.....Heath's selling point when we hired him was that he had made it to the Sweet Sixteen the previous year.....but that trip was with someone else's team. So.......
Using that logic, you are seeing what Mike can do with his own team for the first time THIS season.  You take Madden off of last year's team, and you probably have at least 5 more losses, and nobody is talking about how great last year was.

Heath left the program in an absolute Hog pen.  There's are a plethora of reasons Dana Altman flew in one day, took the job, and left it a few hours later.  It's because of the mess Heath left.  There was no discipline, there were drug and academic issues all over the place, and that left Pelphrey with a huge mess to clean up.

Pelphrey was left with horribly unbalanced classes, and the recruiting job Heath had done left Pelphrey with one of our worst recruiting classes ever.  Pelphrey immediately pulled in a Top 25 class going into his second year, and slowly cleaned up the APR mess that Heath had left him.  You saw steady improvement the next two years, Pelphrey had a Top 10 recruiting class signed, and he had pretty much finally balanced out the classes, but he was let go after year four.

Now, Mike has the balance of the classes all screwed up again, and is about to give us one of our worst years in the last 45.  He could easily finish with a year worse than anything that Pelphrey ever had.  At least Pelphrey's worst was his second, trying to dig out of the hole Heath left.  Mike's is going to be in his fifth, which is completely unacceptable.
