QuoteLeBron James, Kyrie Irving and the Cavaliers will seek to bring the star-crossed city of Cleveland its first major pro sports championship in 52 years on Sunday.

On Dec. 27, 1964, in the NFL championship game, the Jim Brown-led Cleveland Browns roared away from a scoreless halftime tie to beat Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts 27-0.

Cleveland's coach was Blanton Collier — then only three years removed from being let go by the University of Kentucky.

Baltimore's coach was Don Shula — who had been an assistant to Collier at UK in 1959.

"I remember going into the game, there was a lot of talk about the teacher vs. pupil (coaching) matchup," Kay Collier McLaughlin, the middle of Collier's three daughters, said Friday.

Blanton Collier, who died in 1983 at 76, might have had the guttiest career in American football coaching history.

At UK, he succeeded Bear Bryant — arguably the greatest college football coach of all time.

In Cleveland, he followed Paul Brown — arguably the most significant pro football coach of all time.

A Millersburg native and Georgetown College graduate, Collier spent eight seasons (1954-61) as Kentucky's coach. Ten UK coaches later, Collier (41-36-3) is still the last one to leave with a winning record.

Yet, at the time, it was Bryant's shiny 60-23-5 record at UK (1946-53) that Collier's tenure was judged against.

"Daddy knew he had a good record at Kentucky," Collier McLaughlin said. "But I'm sure, on some level, what happened in Cleveland was satisfying because it showed (UK) what it had and let go."

QuoteMore than 100 Stallings-era players, coaches and staff members gathered in Tuscaloosa to relive the glory days. The whirlwind weekend took the group to a farm outside Eutaw, Ala., for Saturday morning of shooting guns, hitting golf balls and some fishing.

It was next to a skeet shooting range where Hape recalled his first meeting with Stallings, now 81 who coached Alabama from 1990-96. This was the summer of 1992 when the Killen, Ala., product was entering his senior year. He'd worked on a hog farm for three years, so he knew about working hard. That was his ticket to big-time college football, he thought.

So at the annual summer football camp in Tuscaloosa, Hape paid attention to every small detail -- ran everywhere full speed. A staffer approached him eventually with an invitation to ride in Stallings cart.

"Patrick, I don't care if you can play a lick of football," Hape remembered Stallings say to him. "But I see how you're working out there and we can make a football player out of you."

Hape went on to star at Alabama and played eight seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2004.

The group included Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, an Alabama receiver from 1990-92. He spoke at Friday night's dinner in Bryant-Denny Stadium along with Nick Saban

QuoteSEC — a league famous for its impatient fans and desperate administrations — the coaches on the so-called hot seat are not the ones you'd predict based on career accomplishments. It's not the guys who are doing the worst whose jobs are most in jeopardy. The coaches at the bottom of this list have little chance of being fired any time soon. Instead it's the coaches ranked just below Saban who are somehow most likely to get the boot.

This list considers the following criteria, presented in order of importance: national championships, conference championships, division titles, major bowl appearances, and overall win-loss record.

QuoteEvery Crimson Tide assistant football coach but Lane Kiffin will have their contract discussed by the committee. The offensive coordinator is entering the third year of his three-year deal signed before the 2014 season. He didn't receive a raise or extension last summer either.

The terms of Kiffin's buyout after being fired from USC in 2013 means Alabama effectively doesn't have to give him raises because he's due $3.4 million a year from USC. Any pay from Alabama only reduces the burden of the USC buyout.

QuoteBefore returning to college football as North Carolina's defensive coordinator in 2015, the former Auburn head coach worked for two years as a football analyst for radio and television.

"I love it. I love the challenge," said Chizik, leaning back in the leather chair of his spacious fourth-floor office overlooking the stadium.  "I love coming in and trying to establish a whole new foundation and a whole new set of beliefs. And I craved that in the two years that I didn't have it. That's why I came back, it's really that simple."

Chizik has continued to receive monthly checks of $209,000 apiece from Auburn. That amount has been prorated from the $700,000-a-year salary Chizik receives now from the Tar Heels to coordinate their defense.

More challenges await Chizik and the Tar Heels this season, starting with the season opener against Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Classic at Atlanta's Georgia Dome on Sept. 3. The Bulldogs represent a difficult task on several levels. Not only is it the first game of the season under a new head coach, but also a new offensive coordinator, questions at quarterback and uncertainty about the status of tailback Nick Chubb.

Chizik believes he'll have at least some idea what Georgia's offense might look like.

"The good news is we played Jim Chaney last year at Pitt," said Chizik, whose defense gave up 415 yards but won 26-19. "So at least we have a little bit of knowledge. Now how that changes based on the personnel that they have, I don't know. And then I'm sure Kirby's going to do defensively the things they've done when he was Alabama. I assume Jim Chaney's going to do what Jim Chaney's always done when he's been at Arkansas or Tennessee or Pitt or wherever he's been."

It's the second consecutive year the Tar Heels have opened against an SEC team in a neutral site game. They lost to South Carolina 17-13 last year in Charlotte.

All-Access: Does SEC football have its weakest group of coaches in years? Discuss.

Scarblog: Athlon doesn't think much of the current SEC coaching fraternity

QuoteACC has five coaches better than anyone in the SEC outside of Saban: No. 7 Jimbo Fisher, No. 9 Dabo Swinney, No. 12 Bobby Petrino, No. 15 David Cutcliffe and No. 16 Mark Richt.

Petrino, Cutcliffe and Richt are former SEC head coaches. Fisher and Swinney are former SEC assistants.

B1G has three coaches better than anyone in the SEC not named Saban: No. 2 Urban Meyer, No. 3 Jim Harbaugh and No. 4 Mark Dantonio. The Big 12 has three: No. 5 Bob Stoops, No. 6 Gary Patterson and No. 11 Bill Snyder. The Pac-12 has two: No. 8 David Shaw and of course, No. 13 Chris Petersen.

There's only one SEC coach in the top 16, but there are 8 in the top 30. Does that mean the league is now overpopulated with good but not great head coaches?

FYI, Jay Jacobs: Gene Chizik coached Auburn's last national title team

QuoteScarblog: Have you noticed anything unusual about Jay Jacobs' recent PR campaign on behalf of Gus Malzahn?

When Jacobs said Tuesday night - and not for the first time - that Malzahn has "taken us to two national championships," he's forgetting one inconvenient truth.

Malzahn may have been the head coach of the 2013 Auburn team that played for the BCS national championship, but he was not the head coach of the 2010 Auburn team that won the BCS national championship.

That distinction still belongs to Gene Chizik. As much as he deserved to be fired two years later, Chizik deserves to be recognized for steering that special 2010 team through an especially intense storm.

There's nothing wrong with giving Malzahn himself plenty of credit for 2010.

That said, as critical as his contributions were, Malzahn could focus on his quarterback and his offense that season. Chizik had larger concerns and greater responsibilities. It's a big step up from OC to CEO.

Worst SEC head coaching hires since the league split into divisions (and maybe ever)

QuoteWill Muschamp, Florida
To be fair to Will Muschamp, his tenure did provide some bright spots.

Lane Kiffin, Tennessee
To be fair, Lane Kiffin was only 33 years old when he took the job coaching Tennessee. The son of NFL coaching legend Monte Kiffin, Lane was one of the hottest names in coaching when he was hired in Knoxville, Tenn. However, the long-range effects...

Derek Dooley, Tennessee
As if the Lane Kiffin fiasco wasn't bad enough, Tennessee went and made another poor hire soon after. To be fair, Dooley was put in a difficult position...

Mike Price, Alabama
It's a story as old as college: kid comes to campus, gets drawn in by the party scene, loses control and his work suffers. Of course, it usually refers to a wide-eyed 19-year-old, and not a 57-year-old man.

John L. Smith, Arkansas
The coup de grace, if you will, is one of the most bizarre situations in SEC history.

QuoteSylvester Croom and Derrick Henry have more in common than might at first be supposed considering their age difference of 40 years.

Both played football at Alabama, where each earned All-American honors. Henry was a unanimous All-American running back last season. Croom was the first-team center on the American Football Coaches Association's All-American squad in 1974.

During the Alabama careers of both men, the Crimson Tide lost five games and won a national championship. In Henry's three seasons, Alabama went 37-5 and won the CFP national title last season. In Croom's four seasons, the Tide went 43-5 and received the UPI national title for 1973.

They also took home some hardware from the SEC after their final collegiate seasons. Croom earned the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the conference's top blocker in 1974. Henry received the SEC Offensive Player of the Year Award last season. He also won the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award and Doak Walker Award for 2015.

So it's not surprising that Croom, who is entering his fourth season as the Tennessee Titans' running-backs coach, had some insight into what he was getting when the NFL team drafted Henry in the second round on April 29.

"From my contacts at the university, his leadership qualities and intangibles were reported to be very high,'' Croom told Jim Wyatt of the Titans' official web site. "And so far, they have been. But until you go through that rookie year, everything is new to you, from Game 1 to the last game. Everything is new to Derrick and all the rookies, from how to train to how to prepare going into the season, and until you get through the first year, you just don't know."

Croom worked with Henry during Tennessee's offseason program. Croom said Henry has obvious physical talent, but the key to his success – or any rookie's – will be "the mental toughness, the mental discipline."

South Carolina pays tribute to Steve Spurrier with Arby's trip

Here are the longest-tenured assistants at each SEC school.

QuoteAlabama: Burton Burns, running backs/associate HC (2007)

Arkansas: Barry Lunney Jr., tight ends (2013)

Bret Bielema's staff has been continuously poached the last few seasons, but Lunney has been a consistent presence. Lunney is one of the top tight ends coaches in the nation, helping Hunter Henry turn into one of the best at his position in the country. Arkansas is a team that uses the tight end position most effectively, so Lunney's handiwork will be well-recognized.

Auburn: Scott Fountain, tight ends/special teams (2009)

Florida: Mike Summers, offensive line (2014)

Georgia: Kevin Sherrer, Tracy Rocker (2014)

Kentucky: D.J Eliot, Vince Marrow, John Schlarman, Jimmy Brumbaugh (2013)

LSU: Steve Ensminger, tight ends (2009)

State: John Hevesy, Greg Knox, Scott Sallach (2009)

Mizzou: Andy Hill, wide receivers/associate HC (1996)
Tigers were the model of consistency under Gary Pinkel. To try and keep that going, Barry Odom held onto Hill, the longest-tenured coach in the SEC. Hill has coached wide receivers at Missouri since 1996, five years before Pinkel even arrived on campus...

Ole Miss: Derrick Nix, running backs (2008)
Few coaches remained with the program after Houston Nutt's tenure, but Nix remained in Oxford.

South Carolina: Shawn Elliott, offensive line (2010)

Tennessee: Steve Stripling/Don Mahoney/Tommy Thigpen/Willie Martinez (2013)

A&M: Clarence McKinney, running backs (2012)

Vandy: Gerry Gdowski, quarterbacks/recruiting coordinator

QuoteDubose spoke today at the Legends Panel, alongside former Troy coach Larry Blakeney, at the AHSAA's annual summer convention in Montgomery. Former Alabama coach Ray Perkins and legendary Auburn coach Pat Dye were also scheduled to attend, but missed for undisclosed reasons.

Dubose said one of his greatest regrets was not travelling to Paris, Texas, and visiting with Gene Stallings when he was picked to replace Stallings as Alabama's head coach.

Dubose said he wasn't prepared to "be a manager of people," and Stallings could have provided guidance.

"I thought I had all the answers, and I didn't have any," he said.

"It's being able to recognize when there is a problem before they become big problems and make the necessary steps to fix them," Dubose said.

Dubose served as Alabama's head coach from 1997-2000, leading the Crimson Tide to an SEC title in 1999 after weathering a sex scandal only to be fired after finishing 3-8 in 2000.

He later coached at Millsaps (Miss.) and enjoyed two stints as head coach at tiny Luverne High in southeast Alabama, going to the state title game in 2003 and advancing to the quarterfinals in 2013. He now serves as a volunteer assistant at Opp, his alma mater.

Now, 15 years after leaving Alabama, he said being fired from Alabama turned out to be a blessing.

"I've said this before: I was angry for a long time after getting fired," he said. "I was given a great opportunity, and I'll forever be truly grateful for it. I'm the one who messed it up."

In 2008, Tennessee forced out longtime coach Philip Fulmer and, thanks to a special clause, was able to dump Fulmer's staff, too.

Former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis believed a similar clause would lead to Les Miles' eventual firing in Baton Rouge.

QuoteChavis, who left after the 2014 season and is now the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M, has been in an ongoing legal battle with his former employer over a $400,000 buyout, which LSU claims Chavis needs to pony up. The coach is denying that responsibility because his lawyers claim a reworded contract supersedes the official contract Chavis originally signed in 2011.

One of the coordinator's primary reasons for leaving was a "Les Miles clause," which — similar to the Fulmer situation at Tennessee — directly tied the fate of assistant coaches to Miles. If the head coach were to be fired, the assistants' contracts would not be "fully honored," according to Dellenger.

Chavis balked when LSU brought the stipulation to him in renegotiations.

"This kind of reminds me of Phillip Fulmer," Chavis told Miles in November 2014.

Miles was reportedly on the chopping block near the end of last season, but his monstrous $15 million buyout helped him keep his job.
