Love the description of the MAryland/BC game. " Being sent to Detroit in mid december feels like more of a punishment than a reward for 6 win.

it will be a good game....Bielema has likely realized that the honeymoon is over and several games in the rear-view mirror....so look for the Porkers to be sharper than a feral hog's tusks and come out of the shoot taking the game directly to the Gobblers....Hogs win easier than the 28-17 score will look

You know there's one too many bowls, when your team gets invited to play in the Dollar General Bowl.

Ours should be the best of the 40 bowls!  WPS

80 out of 128 teams in FBS gets invited. Only 48 teams left out.

Personally I don't feel they should take more than 30-50 teams

Good for the Hogs I printed off the ESPN Bowl TV schedule and I will watch 90% of them this year.

Of course you do.  It's called being a fan.

It has to be at least top half because I won't be able to convince myself to watch at least 50% of them unless I have absolutely nothing else to do.

Let me rephrase...  Despite my Razorback fandom, I think the Belk Bowl is one of the more compelling matchups.

My point is that our fandom colors our judgement.  I doubt people around the rest of the country find it as interesting and intriguing.  Good matchup, probably, but not one of the five or six best.

As with most bowls it will appeal to the 2 teams fan bases, college football fans with nothing else to do on the 29th at 5:30, gamblers, maybe some casual fans who are stuck inside during a blizzard, and those who had the batteries go out in their remote and the tv is stuck on espn.

It MIGHT be a good game, if the Hogs can contain the VT Qb. I am interested in it because I am a Hog fan and because the Hogs have never played VT before.

Agreed. I think there are too many bowls, but I will watch part or all of most of them simply because there is no more for 8 months ( yea the nfl but I dont really watch that until the playoffs ).

Yeah I never understood people complaining about too many Bowl games. It's the last college football for months, and you can tell people really miss it by the number of asinine threads that get made starting in January. I'll watch every game I can. I just love football.

They could get away with about 15 fewer bowls. With how many have overlapping times, you can't watch them all even if you wanted to. 17th, 26th, 28th, 30th, 31st, and Jan 2nd all have overlapping games.

This game pits VT's offensive strength against our defensive weakness. We also have an offense that despite being generally capable, has under-performed. I think AA probably feels the need to play up to his abilities in this final game of the season, and I hope our defensive squad carries similar motivation. It will be interesting to see how the back story plays out in the pre-game broadcast. Both teams have had recent tough losses, and will come in with a chip on their shoulder, and something to prove. Even if one isn't a fan of either team, this game does indeed offer some compelling interest.

What the heck is the Belk bowl? I am really surprised that Arkansas has even accepted an invitation to a bowl game. Their record is "balooned" (LOL) to seven wins, by the payoffs to four "cupcakes" leaving 3 earned wins and not to mention the loss to "cupcake" number 5 Missouri who the Razorbacks were supposed to beat easily. So, why do they deserve to even play in a bowl game? Here we have a coach who is paid over 4 mill per and we are getting Notre Dame results, is there no end to throwing money away. True the program is self sustaining but how long do you think that will last if we continue the way we are going now. Warning, don't put too much stock in the basketball record right now, the Razorbacks haven't started playing any colleges yet.

zuko

You can judge a bowl game by the attendance and the payoff. Virginia Tech is always a big draw because they have had a great program for years.

If we don't go we forfeit the millions in payouts.  Every SEC school will go to a bowl when available.

Win third down on both sides of the ball and we will have a solid chance at a good win.

As one of 40 bowl games and as one of 38 that do not matter, I have no interest in taking 3 1/2 hours of my time in late afternoon on a weekday to watch this game.

Season is over at 7-5 as far as I am concerned. Moving on to other stuff now.

Personally I don't feel they should take more than 30-50 teams

People constantly complain about the number of bowls.  If you don't like the games, then don't watch.  If enough people agree with you then the bowls will go away.  The market will control it, not arbitrarily setting a number on it.

I personally love bowl season and will watch as many as I can.

I miss the days when there were only a few bowl games and the biggies were all Jan. 1. Nowadays I find my interest near zero except for an Arkansas game and the playoffs.......and of course the Holiday bowl, traditionally entertaining.

If there weren't 40 bowls think of all the fascinating statistics we would miss out on, such as how many consecutive years Team X or Coach Y has made a bowl game.

Of the 40 current bowl games, ten of them existed before 1970.  There have been quite a few years in which not every Top 25 team was invited to a bowl.  Then again, the polls used to only rate the Top 10...then the Top 20.

Participation trophies all around...
