One of the Regiments of the Division (504th) is called the Devils in baggy pants.  The reference was found in a dead German officer's journal during WWII.  It has stuck ever since that time.  I spent 4 years in 1/504.

The Official Reason for the Backwards American Flag
Basically, the idea behind the backwards American flag on Army uniforms is to make it look as though the flag is flying in the breeze as the person wearing it moves forward.

The rule dates back to the Army's early history, when both mounted cavalry and infantry units would designate a standard bearer, who carried the flag into battle.

As this standard bearer charged, his forward momentum caused the flag to stream back. Since the Stars and Stripes are mounted with the canton closest to the pole, that section of the flag stayed to the right, while the stripes flew to the left.

Therefore, the flag is worn on the right shoulder, and wearing it backwards gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward.

I think it's the patch of the 82nd Airborne

It's the patch of the 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division. The Germans called them the "Devils in Baggy Pants" due to their tenacious fighting and loose pants that paratroopers wore.

The US flag isn't backwards. It symbolic of waving as the individual wearing it moves forward. It is worn this way on Army uniforms to this day.

However, the flag on the football uniforms is a replica of what was worn on the D Day jump to identify who was so behind enemy lines.

I understand about the flag flying in the breeze as the person wearing it moves forward.  Not trying to argue, just trying to picture this.  If the flag on the football uniform is flying in the breeze as the player moved, wouldn't he be walking backwards?

Ah, that explains the "All-Americans" logo. At first, I thought that seemed a little presumptuous.

I like the WWII netting on the helmet.

I don't like the Totenkopf symbol. Bad connotation there.

No it's not.  It's the helmet insignia used by the 504th during WWII.  The SS didn't have a monopoly on the skull and crossbones.

Ahh, there's the confusion.  The flag displayed on the football uniform is displayed in a "throwback manner" and not the way it is worn today?

If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

Thank you sir.

No problem.  I was in the 82nd for four years including OIF I and OEF V.  I made several trips the 82nd Airborne Division Museum as knowledge of unit history was required for promotion.
