Are we too undersized in this Texas matchup?

Texas has Connor Atchley(6-10 225) and Dexter Pittman(6-10 300) as their starting 4 and 5 men down low. We obviously have Sanchez and Washington playing our tough minutes down low, but when we look to sub with, Brandon Moore, and Marcus Monk we may find problems. Matt Hill the F-C sub for Texas is also 6-10 250. As well their starting 3 G-F, Damion James is 6-7 and a real athlete. I hope Pelphrey changes the lineup around, or stephan welsh is going to have a tough night defensively. I  really wish we still had Jason Henry(6-6), or even heaven forbid, Montrell McDonald(6-6).

Matchups could potentially look like this:

PG-Courtney Fortson(5'11'')                G-A.J. Abrams(5'11'')
                                                      sub: Dogus Balbay(6'0'')
SG-Rotnei Clarke(6'0'')                      G-Justin Mason(6'2'')
                                                      sub: Varez Ward(6'2'')
SG-Stephan Welsh(6'3'')                    SF-Damion James(6'7'')
sub: Marcus Britt(6'2'')                  sub: Gary Johnson(6'6'')* impact sub
PF-Michael Sanchez(6'8'')                  PF-Connor Atchley(6'10'')
sub: Marcus Monk(6'6'')*impct sub sub: Clint Champman(6'10'')
C-Michael Washington(6'10'')             C-Dexter Pittman(6'10'')
sub: Brandon Moore(6'9'')             sub: Matt Hill(6'10'')
            Andre Clark(6'8'')

Even with Abrams and James scoring 19 and 14 ppg, look for them to go low and pound the ball in the paint early and often. They are a deeper team than us as well, as shown. This we be the toughest matchup yet, and if we can win tomorrow, we will certainly have a much easier road to the NCAA tourney.

Go Hogs.

Mr Burns

The place where we're undersized is on the perimeter. We basically start 3 point guard size guys. You saw against Oklahoma we couldn't get out and cover the 3's that well, our guys are just too slow(Clark) and small(Welsh) to get out on bigger guards. Fortson will always have the other teams PG so i'm just looking at the other perimeter guys. It will be interesting to see how well Fortson does having to play defense and offense. He was worn out at the end of the OU game. I'm sure that's part of Texas plan against him. Wear him out making him play defense.
Inside it's all about Washington staying out of foul trouble. He's too valuable on offense. I'd put Sanchez on their scorer, just to keep Washington away from him. Bring Monk in to bang when needed. He's strong and plays bigger than his size because of it. Moore and Andre Clark are going to have to contribute, especially on defense.

The thing that makes me worry less about this is how we handled Blake Griffin. Maybe the kid had an off night but everyone thought he was going to muscle our bigs out of the gym and he didn't. Perusing some stats here:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/teams/tal/stats

They start a 6-10 225 PF (Atchley) and a 6-10 298 C (Pittman) and a 6-7 wing. The 300 lb kid only averages 13 mins but he's started every game but one. He only averages 9 pts and 4.5 boards but again only 13 mins.

Bottom Line: they rotate their bigs. Only one of those 6'10" guys averages over 20 mins per game. They don't have a dominant go-to F/C. I worry more about AJ Abrams, Damion James, and the pg Mason.

We were undersized at almost every position against OU but it seemed our quickness leveled it out.  I think the toughest match up is gonna be our 2 and 3 guards against their small forwards if we go to man. It could be a long night for Welsh Britt and Clarke.

Texas has weak transition d. I hope we can really take advantadge of that. If we just ourscore them maybe we won't have to worry about their 2and3 guards. But we are undersized especially at the 3 like u reiterated.

gimpyrzbk

I must add that pittman had19 pts I believe against app st. And a considerable increase in minutes. But take that with a grain of salt.

Hogimus Prime

if Fortson/Britt gives Abrams trouble bringing the ball up and we make Texas play are game then their size will not give us trouble.   the key is to disrupt their halfcourt offense and make it hard for the Texas guards to get the ball inside to Atchley, Pittman, and Hill.

we may see Monk at the 3 going against Damion James.  James is the kind of 3 that overpowers smaller 3's and takes bigger 3/4's off the dribble.  Monk matches up with him size wise and in quickness.

dotnet

Their bigs are not the most athletic bigs we have or will play this year.  I think we are definitely more athletic than they are and can use that to our advantage.

I agree with a few others, I'm really worried about the size on the wing.  It could be a little scary having welsh or Britt guard James.  The guys arms are bigger than my thighs. When you see his highlights, you would think he would dominate every game, but he definitely doesn't.

I saw the Michigan St. game.  You could tell they really focused on Abrams.  It even looked like they were running a box and 1 (which was used against Brewer for a while) to try to slow him down.  After he cooled off, they just had someone play tight man and deny the ball.  It looked like the key was having someone quick enough to stay with him.

The true mismatch is Fortson's defense against Abram's ability to score...

Its going to be a tough game. I don't worry about Clark defense for us his 3 point shooting that's counts. Keeping Washington out of foul trouble is the key. Look for the Hogs to press most of the night to create turnovers. If we shoot well from the 3 point line will off set their height.

The size difference is a major concern, particulary with James and Johnson.  We may end up having to put Monk on those guys.

The biggest concern is foul trouble, particularly MW and our ability to matchup with and contain James.

Despite the Texas size, road experience, schedule strength and depth advantages, I think we have a decent chance of winning is we can keep all the guys in the game.

Rayzback

I don't think Pittman is conditioned enough if the Hogs set the pace, I don't care how much better shape he is in. Hope he wears down early and/or gets into foul trouble.

I hope Fortson gives Abrams a hard time with his ball handling skills. Texas has been known to turn it over.

Depth will be a factor... someone has to step up... I pray Washington can handle all those minutes.

I hope DJ has another off night.

I also hope Clarke and/or Welsh can drain many 3's. Open up Texas D a bit...

Go Hogs... everyone say your prayers tonight :}

We ran a 2-3 zone against Okie and it slowed their inside game and kept us somewhat out of major foul trouble early.

Maybe Pel will try the same thing about the Shorthorns and make them beat us outside. Running a box with a man on Abrams could be another alternative....I think Britt could give him trouble in that scheme.

Go Hogs.

I think James will be the key.  If he can play like a true wing player, then he can really use his height advantage over Britt and Welsh.  However, James is more of an inside player from what I've seen of Texas, and we've beaten teams that are bigger than us.  Also, they've (Texas) have managed to get out-rebounded this year every once in a while.  Despite our lack of size, we're top in the SEC in rebounding differential (+6.5) while Texas is about 4th in the Big 12 at (+3.5).  Texas likes to slow it down a bit and clamp down defensively.  If we can get them to try and start running with us, I don't think they have the scorers or stamina to keep up with us.

our zone against OU is what allowed them to get back in it. Crocker was out the majority of the game "because he was mad about his long sleeved shirt"-(blake eddins). Once he came back in he shot over our zone and pulled them closer.  I believe we are going to have to be more creative against those guards than a 2-3 zone. Dont pray to stop, just to contain.

I agree.  Abrams is deadly from 3 point range.  If we play a 2-3 zone against them, he'll score 30.  I guess this is okay if our interior defense is amazing, but I think we're going to have to come up with something better than that.

I'm not sure we'd be ok even if we had Henry.  Henry's good on offense (he's still raw), but his defense needs a lot of improvement.  If we keep Abrams and James from going off we win the game.

We have to run our arses off in this game!  We need to keep Pittman running like a mad man so he will get tired.  Also, there is a good chance Connor Atchley will probably be missing the game due to getting 30 stitches in his tongue! (OUCH!).  If we can execute running our arses off then I say advantage AR.  The matchup between Fortson and Clarke on A.J. Abrams will be huge!  The guy is an amazing player... but so was Taylor Griffin.

HawgnCorona

Blake was hugh, and the CJP had a good game plan to stop (limit) him for most of the game...I dont think a game plan to limit Abrams and Jamison will mean any less.

Some of some say we have on the rose colored glasses,ok fair enough...that could be true. But I also say you could argue take off the Burnt Orange glasses if you think Tejas is " a beast" I have watched them play a couple of games and I dont think they are all that great. Well coached? absolutely! Beatable you had better believe it!!

I cant wait to play this game...

We will no doubt be outsized by Texas that is why I think you will see Coach Pel have our guys push the ball more than ever tommorow night, we will try to wear them down by running the ball, if that does not work we better be very precise with our offense.

I think you are correct...what some of us soon forget is we have great coaching staff with alot more experience perhaps the Tejas. Thats why I'm not giving Tejas anything in this matchup...and its a home too!!!

Atchley isn't a pure post player.  Half his shots come from the arc.  Our little guys may, however, have a difficult time contesting his shots on the perimeter.  The smaller Gary Johnson actually takes more shots inside the arc.  Texas is really a jump-shooting team.  Oklahoma shoots 55% inside the arc for the season, Texas only 48%.  Thay don't have the power on the box that OU has.  However, James is a major matchup concern. Damion meet Marcus Monk.  He will be your escort for the duration of your BWA visit. Texas probably defends better than OU.  They also block a lot more shots than OU.

010HogFan

If we really want a shot in this game, the pace will need to be lightning fast.

If Fortson can run it down the floor alot and tire out Texas' bigs, along with scrappy defense in the paint, then we have a great chance.

Niels Boar

Texas actually has modest numbers on offense.  They have been winning with very good defense.  If we come out of the gate scoring, I like our chances.  If they frustrate us on O, we will have to see how this young team reacts.

threeNout

Just get BWA cranked up, that's what matters the most.

Sure, Texas is an experienced road team but how many atmospheres have they played in that can compare to BWA at full tilt? few is my guess.

Drain the 3's early and get BWA rockin, just like against OK, and all these other things won't matter as much and we'll have our shot at winning.

They play physical and foul a ton.  They shoot free throws as poorly as we do.  They live off the offensive glass, because their pure post scoring is crude.  Hogs have their work cut out, but it's obvious what they need to do.

When it comes to size, as long as your player has the quickness and toughness like someone said before, it all evens out.  We have talented guards for sure, and with the style Pel plays defense will not be a problem.  Nova played with 4 guards the year they did really well, they were almost outsized game in and out but they played hard and were very talented. I believe the same will be true here.  I'm not calling a win or anything, but I dont think size will be the deciding factor in this one.

:razorback: GO HOGS, BEAT THE HORNS!  :razorback:

We won't go man much in this game.  We will play our amoeba zone (2-3) and try to deny their bigs the ball and when they do get it drop a small guard back and try to strip it.   That will make Abrams and Mason beat us from the perimeter if they can.

It will be a tough test to see how we stack up with a more traditionally balanced team.  It's going to be a tough one to win, but like I said before Okie, we can do it.

On a serious note we cannot let Abrams pull a Willie Warren and go off for 20+ in the first half....the guy is 43/96 from the 3 and gets to the line off penetration and shoots around 85%. With our perimeter defense having been so poor it is imperative someone stays in that guys face.If they keep him from going off and do a decent job on James they will be in it til the end.
