Rob Evans coached the '97 and '98 teams that finished 1st in the SEC-W after a tough first four seasons.

Rod Barnes coached from '99 to '06 including the stretch of three NCAA tournament appearances in four seasons capped by the only Ole Miss Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2001.  Ole Miss entered the tournament as a 3 seed.

A coach who reaches his seventh season at a given school is, almost by definition, a coach who has passed the audition.

I note that his Bulldogs have reached the NCAA tournament twice, both times as a No. 10 seed, the trips coming four years apart. Georgia lost its first game both times. Georgia's only postseason victory under Fox was against Vermont in the NIT.

Over six full seasons and 24 games, Georgia is 57-56 in SEC play. It has been ranked in the Associated Press poll once – at No. 24 the week of Jan. 10, 2011. Fox has signed one McDonald's All-American. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope stayed two years and was the 2013-14 SEC player of the year. The Bulldogs had losing records in both seasons with KCP, an NBA lottery pick.

Georgia is 7-6 in SEC play but 1-5 against teams above .500 in the league standings. It lost by 34 points to Texas A&M and Kentucky. It managed 48 points (making 11 baskets) last week in Rupp Arena. In losing to Florida at Stegeman Coliseum on Tuesday, the Bulldogs mustered 53 points.

Fox's team defends well, usually a sign of coaching. Per Ken Pomeroy's analytics, Georgia ranks 16th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency. It is, however, 203rd in adjusted offense. This with two senior guards who've started since they were sophomores. This with Fox having had six years to install his system and stock players to fit.

And there's the rub. According 247 Sports' composite ratings, Fox's full signing classes have ranked 71st, 32nd, 56th, 67th, 96th and 57th nationally. (Rated 46th, the 2016 class includes two 4-star signees.) If we go by those tepid numbers, Georgia has won at a higher rate that its talent might suggest. But why should the flagship university of a state that produces bountiful basketball talent make do with tepid talent?

It's sometimes said that Fox doesn't like recruiting AAU players. Well, Kenny Gaines and Marcus Thornton played for the Georgia Stars, Charles Mann for Southern Select, J.J. Frazier for the South Georgia Kings, Caldwell-Pope for the Georgia Blazers. Assistant coach Jonas Hayes found Yante Maten playing AAU ball in Michigan. The point being: Almost every player on scholarship at a mid-major or above played AAU ball.

The last time it happened, Ronald Steele and Squeaky Johnson were the point guards, Mark Gottfried and Mike Anderson the head coaches.

The last time Alabama and UAB both made the NCAA Tournament in the same year, little did we know March of 2006 would be the last time in a number of ways.

Ten years later, it remains the last time the Crimson Tide won an NCAA Tournament game, beating Marquette in the first round. It was the last time Gottfried led the Tide into the tournament, ending the program's streak of five straight appearances.

It also was the last time Anderson coached the Blazers, losing to Kentucky in the first round, then leaving for Missouri.

Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum will honor the best team in Mississippi State basketball history next month.

On March 31, while college basketball prepares to crown this season's champion, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame will honor the 1995-96 MSU team that advanced to the Final Four. The squad remains the only Magnolia State program to advance to the Final Four.

"It really doesn't seem like it's been 20 years because somebody brings it up almost every day," former head coach Richard Williams said in a statement. "I see a lot of the guys often, but I'm really looking forward to getting back together as a team."

Mississippi State began its run to the Final Four by defeating eventual national champion Kentucky in the SEC Tournament Championship at the Louisiana Superdome. The No. 5-seeded Bulldogs then defeated Virginia Commonwealth, Princeton, No. 1 seed Connecticut and No. 2 seed Cincinnati to secure a spot in the Final Four.

A&M's Woodward: new deal for Billy Kennedy could be forthcoming

New Texas A&M athletic director Scott Woodward said Tuesday during a wide-ranging interview with The Dallas Morning News that a new deal could be on the way for men's basketball coach Billy Kennedy.

Kennedy has two  years remaining on his contract, but they were essentially added to his original five-year deal for cosmetic reasons. Neither party has any financial obligation to the other after this season. No. 21 A&M (20-7) is expected to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in Kennedy's five seasons.

"We will be," Woodward said when asked if negotiations are underway. "And I've assured coach Kennedy that we want him here and we have strong feelings to keep him here. And I think there will be something forthcoming in the near future."

In the 1950s, Eddie Sutton was one of 18 graduates in his senior class at Bucklin (Kansas) High School. After having played basketball for and been heavily influenced by coach Henry P. Iba at Oklahoma State, Sutton became a coach, an athletic director and a U.S. history teacher in the '60s at Tulsa's Central High School. He was paid $4,500 a year.

In 40 years after leaving Central, Sutton became one of the more accomplished coaches in college basketball history.

On Saturday, as his 80th birthday is celebrated with sons Stephen, Sean and Scott and other family members at his south Tulsa home, Sutton undoubtedly will reminisce about his lifetime of basketball...
