49-30 UTA is leading with just over 11 minutes left.  Watching it on Campus Insiders.

Kinda funny going back and reading the comments during and after our game against them.

We have avoided playing terrible teams and it appears that Fort Wayne and UTA are actually going to help our RPI. I am also convinced that Houston will do pretty well in the AAC this year.

There are a lot of basketball ignorant fans on here. Just look at the names on the jerseys and don't understand how basketball has changed.

Kinda funny going back and reading the comments during and after our game against them.

UT Arlington started the season 1-3, and one factor involved with that was the fact that their star player, power forward Kevin Hervey, was coming off the bench instead of starting. Hervey had an ACL injury last season and was still in the recovery phase. He still might be. But after he played 18 minutes off the bench against Arkansas and had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 4 fouls, Hervey finally reentered the starting lineup.

Hervey has scored in double digits for five straight games. He put up 18 points, 10 rebounds against Texas, when UT Arlington won by 11. At Saint Mary's last night, Hervey had a game-high 15 points, 7 rebounds.

Saint Mary's starts 6-11, 255 and 6-10, 230 up front, while UT Arlington has Hervey (6-9, 230) and Jorge Bilbao (6-9, 245).

You might remember that UT Arlington plays very good defense around the basket. They held Saint Mary's to 8-24 shooting from 2-pt range last night. Outscored them 40-16 inside.

UT Arlington has all juniors and seniors in its top 10 players. How often have you ever seen that? They are going to have a great season. The Sun Belt champ last season, UALR, ended up with a low-40s RPI, and Arlington could do that too. That would give Arkansas a valuable top 50 win.

Right now UT Arlington is ranked No. 20 in RPI, right behind Arkansas, according to TeamRankings, but those numbers get crazy early in the season. UALR's top RPI ranking early last season was No. 1, for example.

This could end up being our best non league win even if we beat Texas and ok state.

Even with its good RPI and great record, UALR was a 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament last March. Oklahoma State has a chance to be better than that. Texas, who knows. They played Michigan well. Their young players are going to get better.

played them close, but both teams couldn't hit the broad side of a barn shooting. Ugly game.

And a 12 seed for a Sun Belt is about as good as you can get for that caliber of a school.  Conference SOS will hurt teams like UT-Arlington/UALR etc.

Look we all know you gotta win games, but it is pretty evident that Arkansas has put together a nice non-conference schedule that avoids playing high RPI opponents and playing several 50-150 RPI opponents.  This is what is really going to help possibly getting into the tournament.  A few of these "no name" teams will probably be in the tournament as well.

I wonder how many are reading this thread and wondering why we are talking about St. Mary's as being a good win for UTA.

A lot of folks in Arkansas, since only football counts in this state. But anyone who follows college basketball knows about St. Mary's.

Hervey came off the bench but he was playing the third most minutes of anyone. So okay he wasn't starting, but he was playing starters minutes. So IMO that's just an excuse to make it seem as though Hervey wasn't playing much. He was, and is.

No, he was working himself into shape and still recovering from his ACL injury. Only started practicing again shortly before fall practices began. He is getting better all the time. I'm amazed how fast players come back from knee surgery anymore. At one time it would knock you out for a full calendar year.

Hervey got into their opening games but wasn't clicking yet. He shot 4-11 in their first game, 1-6 in game two, 5-16 in game three, 3-8 in 18 minutes against us. Next game he reentered the starting lineup against a pushover opponent, made 6-12 shots, and he's been getting better and better since then.

They list him at 6-9, 230. Hervey was guard-sized when he entered high school then grew into being a swing forward. He retained a lot of skills and grew into being a pro-type combo forward.

Hervey tore an ACL when he was in high school, then it happened again last Jan. 21. I don't know whether it was the same injury. The original injury was why he ended up at UT Arlington instead of a bigtime program.

Arlington might have beaten out UALR in the Sun Belt last season, had Hervey not been injured. He scored 20+ points seven times before the injury and topped 10 rebounds numerous times.

Hervey was not starting on Nov. 18 against Arkansas -- but it does not really matter. We got him in foul trouble the second time he came into the game.

He played a five-minute stretch, sat for a bit, came back when Faith Pope got his second foul. Manny Watkins drew his first foul with good rebounding position. Dustin Thomas drew an offensive foul on him a minute later. Then Thomas got his third foul a few seconds later.

When Hervey came back in the second half, Thomas got good position on the offensive boards and drew Hervey's fourth foul just like that, seconds after he came into the game. He came back at 11:57, played off and on for the rest of the game without fouling out. He did not contribute much but did make a three at the 1:30 mark.

Arlington's guards outplayed Arkansas's in that game, but the Hogs offset that by drawing a bunch of fouls on the other end, 14 on their big men.

The nice part is we get the win, and they are going to win a lot more games. They've won seven straight after we beat them. Arlington might be favored in all its remaining games (until the NCAAT).

Arkansas has a good roster.  It's not great.  It does have good depth.  It is versatile.  We will win the majority of our home games against similar rosters.  We are likely to lose road games against similar rosters.  When conference play starts, we could easily start 0-3.  Conference coaches are more familiar with sets and personnel, thus, in game adjustments are vital to the success of college teams.  I don't see the Hogs having the upper hand when that happens.  The SEC will not get more than 5 teams to the NCAA tournament, 4 is much more likely.  We could be that 5th team, but I'm doubtful if we are in the tournament if the SEC only sends 4.

He was playing the same amount of minutes as he is now and was. Again he wasn't working himself into shape. If anything the coach was bringing him off the bench thinking he had rust to knock off. But he was playing the most minutes as about anyone on that team. You wrote a lot to say little, Hervey was playing up to speed against us but got in foul trouble as the kid isn't a huge proponent of defense.
