I think this thread is needed to keep people's understanding  of the parity of college hoops in perspective. Gone are the  days of  expecting a victory because of the name on the front of the jersey.

I am always ready for Hog Ball!

The football season has no bearing on my excitement for basketball season to begin.

I know I'm in the minority, but I rank Hog basketball above Hog football every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Has a lot to do with the era in which I grew up, but for me personally there is just nothing better than watching the Hogs run up and down the court!
Woo Pig Sooiee!  Can't wait for the season to tip off.  I'm hoping for a much more competitive team this season.

You'll see a lot of garbage posted here, though-- people who look at a school like Albany beating Penn State as an upset.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

In the non-con season I don't look upon any game result as an upset.  There are always new players trying to fit into their roles, coaches trying to nail down rotations, and teams trying to establish chemistry.  I do think it's important to pay attention to the progress or lack of progress of your team's players.  Our new guys are trying to get their games going, Anton is trying to fine-tune his game and Dusty's 3's are coming back.  HOWEVER, I am concerned about Moses.  Our pre-season POTY seems to be having the same issues as last year.  Early fouls which means he sits until 2nd half; then he has to be extra cautious in the paint to avoid the other two or three fouls.  Which means there will be more drives and 2nd chance points by the other team.  If it doesn't change I fear it will be even more of a problem in conference games.  If this be the case who do we have that can pick up that slack? (Sorry if I went off on a tangent)

Two huge ones thwere, especially Washington.

And today it looks like Georgetown may take down preseason top 5 Oregon.

Ugly basketball, but this would be as big an upset as either of those.

Has Penn St. done anything since the John Amaechi days?

They've had a couple of decent NIT runs, and two NCAA appearances in that 20 year period, while Albany for contrast has been to the NCAA tournament 5 times in the last 10 years.

Again, though, people will look at the university names and assume 'upset'.

Wow..Washington's PG is supposed to be the best guard in the country. Projected #1 in some mocks.

Fultz played superbly;  his team simply got crushed on the glass, and at the FT line.  He put up 30, 7 boards,6 assists, a block, and only 3 turnovers despite playing 36 grueling minutes-- and he did it efficiently, shooting about 65% from the floor, 40% from 3.

The rest of his team lost that game.

St. John's lost at home 79-72 to Delaware State of the MEAC, which came into the game with an 0-5 record against Division I opponents.

Delaware State had some ugly losses against mediocre to bad teams.

St. John's was 2-4 against a tough schedule. Chris Mullin must be a joke of a coach, though. You don't lose to Delaware State, even if you are starting five walk-ons. St. John's played no defense whatsoever.

At home, Ohio State lost 79-77 in overtime last night to Florida Atlantic. FAU came in with a 2-5 record, while the Buckeyes were 7-1 having lost only by 2- points at Virginia.

This qualifies as one of the most surprising upsets in a while. FAU had shown nothing season to date, but they made 10 threes while the Buckeyes were 4-20.

This doesn't even remotely qualify as an upset.

UT Arlington 65, Saint Mary's (a top 20 team) 51, that is an upset.

RPIs mean more than rankings do at this point, but it's early for either

Losing gracefully isn't taught in second-tier programs. See Arkansas, Cincinnati, et al.

RPIs mean nothing at this point. This early, rankings are much closer to reality than RPI.

BTW in Ken Pomeroy's site, MTSU was favored against Vandy, while Saint Mary's was a 13-point favorite over Texas-Arlington.

Good morning buddy

RPIs are based on what have happened, rankings are based on what people think will happen, but keep pumping that fist brother

And that's exactly why RPIs are meaningless this early in the season. Not enough has happened.

Middle Tennessee State is the fourth-ranked team in the country according to RPI. Do you believe MTSU is better than Gonzaga, Louisville, Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA, Kentucky, Virginia, Duke?

According to RPI, UCF is better than almost all of those teams. UT Arlington (6-3) is rated higher than UCLA, Virginia, Kentucky and Duke. Notre Dame is 9-0 but ranked 31st, well below Arkansas and MTSU, UT Arlington, whatnot.

The RPI math never works well this early. It has been true forever. This isn't news. Good lord.

You're smarter than that. RPI isn't a measure of who is the best team, it's who has been challenged by their schedule and who has been most successful playing that schedule. You're and regiment is ridiculous that people picking a preseason top 25 is more accurate than what has happened on the court to this point

Holy crap. I never look at polls. I use systems that adjust rankings in real time according to outcomes but are far more sophisticated than the crude RPI formula - which is crap until it gets a lot of data + still is pretty noisy even in March.
