Vanderbilt basketball has landed strong recruiting classes before, even 46 years ago

QuoteVanderbilt basketball already has put together one of the nation's best recruiting classes, and it could get even better.

But how does this group compare to other talent-rich signing classes in the Commodores' past?

It might be the best in program history, although it's difficult to compare to classes from decades ago when modern recruiting services didn't exist. The current signing class is certainly the Commodores' highest ranked since 247Sports began keeping national team rankings in 2003.

Vanderbilt's 2018 signing class is ranked No. 7 by 247Sports composite ratings. It already includes Brentwood Academy's Darius Garland (No. 2 point guard), Simi Shittu (No. 2 power forward) and Aaron Nesmith (No. 15 small forward).

1972 class: Foundation of F-Troop

In 1972, Vanderbilt landed two of the 10 players on the Sunkist High School All-American, a precursor to the McDonald's All-American team. They later made up two-thirds of the Commodores' famed F-Troop trio.

Jeff Fosnes from Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Joe Ford from Mayfield, Ky., both made that Sunkist "Super Ten" list and signed with Vanderbilt. Two others on the "Super Ten" that year were future Boston Celtics Robert Parrish and Quinn Buckner.

All three members of the F-Troop, including Butch Feher, finished their Vanderbilt careers as 1,000-point scorers.

other starter was Jan Van Breda Kolff .  That was a good team.  I remember when Vandy signed 7'2" Steve Turner back in 1968
