UK, A&M tied for first at 12-5. LSU, Vandy next at 11-6. USC third at 10-6, plays UGa Thursday. UK plays LSU, A&M plays Vandy Saturday.

In terms of finishing top-four, USC controls its own destiny. Win, and it has the tiebreakers to beat LSU, Vandy and A&M for a tourney seed.

It's crazy to think a team that could potentially win the conference outright on Saturday could also fall to the fifth seed in the tournament

Here's how it can happen:

— Texas A&M loses to Vanderbilt

— Kentucky loses to LSU

— South Carolina beats Georgia tonight and Arkansas on Saturday

That would create a five-way tie in the conference with a 12-6 record for all teams. In that case, the SEC would seed based on the winning percentage among the tied teams. Kentucky would hold a 2-4 record in the group, putting it in a tie with A&M behind the other three. A&M would then hold that tiebreaker by way of head-to-head record.

The top five seeds would look like this:

1. South Carolina
2. LSU
3. Vanderbilt
4. Texas A&M
5. Kentucky

No great team emerged from the SEC men's basketball season. Five league losses qualified for a co-championship for the first time since 1991.

What that translates to, however, is a compelling, wide-open SEC tournament in Nashville starting Wednesday night.

Missing will be Missouri and Tennessee's injured Kevin Punter Jr. Present will be thousands of Kentucky fans inside and outside Bridgestone Arena.

Make no mistake, this is a Kentucky party. The Wildcats own 28 SEC tournament titles. Alabama is next at 13 (but hasn't won since 1991).

That said, legions of Big Blue fans in the arena and bars does not guarantee a trophy. Kentucky has won only three of the past 11 tournaments. Florida has won four in that span...

Arkansas: Considering the talent drain from last year, the Razorbacks mildly overachieved at 16-15. Dusty Hannahs is the SEC transfer of the year. He is ninth in scoring (16.0), third in 3-point shooting (44.1 percent) and first in free throws (86.1 percent).

2016 regular season was parity-filled and rigorous. The 2016 SEC Tournament shouldn't be much different.

The tournament is already unorthodox because only 13 teams will be participating after Missouri slapped a postseason ban on itself following a slew of NCAA violations.

Will Kentucky earn its second consecutive automatic bid? Can Texas A&M break its 29-year conference tournament drought one week after snapping its 30-year regular-season championship rut? Can LSU, Florida or Alabama put together a run to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, or even win the SEC [tournament] title outright?

Second Round

(Eight) Florida vs. (9) Arkansas (Thursday, 1 p.m. ET, SEC Network)
2016 head-to-head results: Florida, 87-83 (Feb. 3)

Gators coach Mike White said his team will take this process one game at a time and can't think about making the NCAA Tournament without beating the Razorbacks for a second time this year. The problem is the Gators have struggled offensively down the stretch, and Arkansas finished the season with three players ranked in the top 10 in scoring in the SEC. The Razorbacks are 4-1 in their last five contests, while Florida is 1-4.

Prediction: Arkansas 77, Florida 72

Aggies: Probably can't do a whole lot to improve or decrease their seed line.

Wildcats: Their ceiling is probably a three seed if they win the whole thing.

Gamecocks: Got the win they needed Saturday at Arkansas. They'd like to see Georgia in their first game because that would be another quality victory. Beat Kentucky and A&M to win the tourney and Frank Martin's team could be a six seed.

Tigers: Can forget all that talk about the committee sneaking LSU into the field because of Ben Simmons. Wins over Vanderbilt and Texas A&M would put them back into the conversation, but they likely have to win the tournament to make it.

Commodores: Are boasting a win over Kentucky and two over Florida as part of their resume. A first-game loss would drop their seed line but wouldn't knock them out of the tournament.

Bulldogs: Have an outside chance if they reach the final with three wins because two would be over South Carolina and likely Kentucky.

Rebels: Could get to 22 wins and would boast a win over Kentucky if they reach the semifinal. That still probably wouldn't be enough because of their soft non-conference schedule. Reach the finals

Gators: Could be in with two wins, but not if things keep going the way they did Monday with the wrong mid-major teams winning this week. Win three games and you're in, Florida. Win two and you have a decent chance. Win one, prepare to go to North Florida for the NIT.

Razorbacks: Would have to win four games in four days. It has been done by Arkansas before, but Nolan Richardson isn't walking through that door.

Tide: Has a chance. It would have to beat Ole Miss and then Kentucky to get into the conversation. A win over South Carolina in the semis might be enough.

Bulldogs: Have to win four games in four days.

SEC tournament got off to a rough start, at least technologically

One of the shot clocks wasn't working, leading the public address announcer to issue periodic updates as Auburn shot at Tennessee's basket:

"20 (seconds) ... 10 ...."

In the second half a giant shot clock was placed near the basket.

There were also some brief glitches on the scoreboard overhanging the court. Some of the lights at Bridgestone Arena in the upper sections were also out. A bank of them came on a couple minutes into the game, shining a light on press row.

A rough schedule — teams must win at least three days in a row to take the title — has Calipari worried about his Kentucky squad's health before next week's national tournament.

"One of the reasons I don't like conference tournaments: It hasn't seemed to improve our seed if we do well, and there are games Friday, Saturday, Sunday," Calipari said at Belmont's Curb Center on Thursday afternoon. "There's nothing we do all year that's Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The NCAA Tournament is a game, a day off, a game."

Thursday, Calipari cut short a mandatory team appearance at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena because he felt it "wasn't needed." But the coach declined to propose any big changes to the current tournament structure.

"It's all good stuff," he said. "The SEC has done a good job. I love this venue. I love Atlanta. They're great venues. (Future host city) St. Louis is fine. I like St. Louis."

Georgia is into the SEC semifinals for the third straight year, beating South Carolina 65-64 on Friday night. Now the Bulldogs move on to face Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia trailed most of the game, and was behind by two with 50.5 seconds left.

Georgia (19-12) beat South Carolina (23-8) for the third time this season. That's the first time since 1984 that the Bulldogs have defeated any team three times in one season.
