Les Miles says he'll visit w/other staffs in off-season and study their spread systems. But will #LSU really change? http://bit.ly/1PtN3JD

QuoteFor more than a month, Les Miles has indicated that LSU's offense will change.

Miles said he would "tinker" with the unit during practice ahead of the Texas Bowl, and the coach said he'd "tweak" things to make the offense more productive.

Athletic director Joe Alleva said he and Miles have agreed that offensive changes need to be made...

So, can LSU fans expect to see a different offense when No. 22 LSU (8-3) plays Texas Tech (7-5) at 8 p.m. Tuesday at NRG Stadium?

No.

Coach Miles mentioned that LSU will stay with what has made them successful in 2015 especially with limited bowl practices.  They will visit staffs running spread offenses during the off-season.

I doubt they really change. Running the ball and great defense has been LSU's identity for years. All they are lacking is a competent quarterback to run the system and they will be back in contention.

Grading #LSU @TexasBowl victory against @TexasTech @lsufball, @tigerdroppings http://s.nola.com/ev6a2hl  via @nolanews

QuoteCOACHING: A

LSU got it done and there really weren't any coaching gaffes to dissect, although drop the notion that the offense was tweaked. It was pretty much the same old thing against a really bad defense. That's where the 638 yards came. One good coaching move, apparently, was having Cam Cameron on the sideline at the suggestion of Brandon Harris, who appeared far more calm than usual. This was a move talked about before the season before Cameron was diagnosed with, and treated for, prostate cancer. Look for it in the future if Cameron is still at LSU next year.

The best coaching was done prior to the game. LSU was certainly prepared and excited about playing in this lower-tier bowl game. In the last three seasons ,the disappointment at not being in the playoffs or BCS Championship Game was palpable. This team was excited about playing, especially the defense, and went hard from the first snap to the last.

Texas Tech looked shocked at the overall speed LSU displayed and Red Raiders' coach Kliff Kingsbury acknowledged as much after the game. Although there weren't any major scheme tweaks, Les Miles finally let D.J. Chark play after singing his praises throughout the offseason. Was this an example of Les Miles coach with nothing to lose? Stay tuned.

Torqued pork

Les has coached against and watched enough spread offenses to know a thing or two about them. I suspect this is just to muffle the critics of his old school offense. Until they put a decent QB on the field they will continue to struggle against quality defenses.

LSU coach Les Miles says school is working on new contract for OC Cam Cameron http://sec.news/1OKy7Sw

QuoteOn the day LSU introduced new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, Tigers coach Les Miles also dropped some news regarding his top-ranking offensive assistant.

AM | As #LSU's defense goes modern under Dave Aranda, it's up to Les Miles to modernize Tigers' offense - http://bit.ly/1SyQxvq

QuoteAranda is widely viewed as a rising star, an aggressive, risk-taking, new-age kind of defensive coordinator who has the chops and the tactics to take on and neutralize the new-age offenses that have made their way into the playbooks of virtually every Southeastern Conference school.

The operative word is "virtually," because LSU has shown little tendency or ability to date to embrace this new world order in college football. The Tigers and coach Les Miles have maintained their devotion to a traditional power running game with a missionary zeal. The book on LSU has been that if, it passes the ball, it's much more by necessity than design.

But perhaps Aranda's arrival signals a thaw in the Cold War-era offensive politics of the way LSU tries to move the ball.

At his final pre-Texas Bowl news conference while seated next to the living embodiment of modern offense — pass-happy Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury — Miles said his staff would go out this offseason and study the schemes of spread-offense teams. Certainly a visit to Texas Tech's campus wouldn't be a bad place to start.

Miles has talked of balanced offense before. This year's team finished 106th nationally in passing offense, averaging 179.8 yards per game, thanks in large part to a 261-yard passing "bonanza" against the defensively stunted Red Raiders.

But if he's willing to go out of his comfort zone and hire Aranda, an out-of-the-box defensive thinker for sure, then maybe Miles is ready to unleash the kind of offensive plays that will help take opposing teams out of the box when they line up to defend the Tigers.

Miles said he expects the rest of his staff to remain intact. Athletic director Joe Alleva told The Advocate on Tuesday that the school is working on a new contract for offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, now about to embark on his fourth season in Tigertown.

That news is no doubt going to send some Tigers fans into a funk. But remember, Cameron is the guy who called the plays in 2013 that helped LSU become the first school in SEC history to have two 1,000-yard receivers (Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Jeremy Hill) in the same season, plus a 3,000-yard passer in Zach Mettenberger to boot.

Cameron was head coach at Indiana when Antwaan Randle El was one of the college game's brightest offensive stars. Cameron can call the plays to diversify LSU's offense — even without shearing away completely from its power running roots — just as Alabama and Arkansas did last season. It's a matter of the man under the white hat having the will to do so.

Our @RabalaisAdv is in Phoenix at the CFP title game. Notes: Spears says Miles must improve O or he won't last http://bit.ly/22TUZJP

QuotePHOENIX — Former LSU All-American Marcus Spears likes Les Miles' bold hire of Dave Aranda as the Tigers' new defensive coordinator, but he says LSU's long-time coach has to be just as bold in modernizing the offense.

"I don't think he'll last the year if he doesn't change," said Spears, who is here covering the CFP National Championship Game between Alabama and Clemson for the SEC Network. "I don't see the administration and fan base with all what went on at the end of the year not letting that carry over to when the season starts."

Miles and athletic director Joe Alleva said LSU is working to renew the contract for offensive coordinator Cam Cameron to bring him back for a fourth season. Miles also said LSU coaches will visit other programs to glean information on how they run the spread offense.

Update: Potential Wilson replacements may include Larry Porter, Josh Henson, Jabbar Juluke, Burton Burns - http://bit.ly/1mZaGhN  #LSU

QuoteLSU is losing its hotshot recruiting coordinator three weeks before National Signing Day.

Frank Wilson informed coach Les Miles on Thursday evening that he's leaving the Tigers to be the head coach at University of Texas at San Antonio...

Wilson, a 42-year-old from New Orleans, just completed his sixth season with the Tigers as recruiting coordinator and running backs coach. He's helped bring in some of the nation's best recruits while in Baton Rouge, including the Tigers' No. 2-ranked signing group in 2014.

That class' main star: running back Leonard Fournette.

Potential candidates could include current North Carolina running backs coach Larry Porter, who spent 2005-09 coaching running backs at LSU and had a brief stint as the head coach at Memphis; Alabama running backs coach Burton Burns, a New Orleans native; Texas Tech running backs coach Jabbar Juluke, a Southern University graduate and former Louisiana Tech assistant; and Josh Henson, the former Missouri offensive coordinator who worked with Miles at Oklahoma State and LSU.

LSU's Ethan Pocic and John Battle have surgery, likely out for the spring  http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2016/01/lsus_ethan_pocic_and_john_batt.html ...

QuoteA battered LSU team is taking steps in becoming healthier for the 2016 season, as starting junior center Ethan Pocic and sophomore safety John Battle undergo successful surgeries, according to multiple sources.

Pocic declined to enter the NFL Draft, and it may be safe to assume that his injury certainly aided in his decision to return for his senior season. Pocic suffered an undisclosed hip injury, which required surgery, and his rehabilitation is said to be 4-6 months, making his return in time for spring football "highly unlikely," a source said.

As for Battle, he suffered from a torn labrum in his hip as well as a sports hernia. Battle's rehab will also take 4-6 months, and he, too, is expected to miss the entire spring football period, leaving the Tigers shorthanded at the safety position.

LSU recruiting mailbag: Can the Tigers add a QB to its 2016 class? http://sec.news/1noecmV

QuoteLSU's top priority, Dwayne Haskins, flipped his commitment from Maryland to Ohio State on Monday, meaning the Tigers' Plan A was ruined. Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron flew to Maryland to visit with the four-star prospect, who agreed to take an official visit to LSU this weekend, but in the end LSU's push came too late.

In the past few days, LSU has begun to put together a Plan B, which has been to offer 2015 Mr. Louisiana quarterback Lindsey Scott of Zachary High School (Baton Rouge, La.). Scott, a three-star prospect, was previously committed to Syracuse before reopening his recruitment and fielding offerings from LSU, Tulane, Rutgers and Maryland, among others.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder churned out more than 5,000 yards of total offense his senior campaign in Zachary's spread offense, which as we know is far different than what Cameron is running up in Baton Rouge, La. However, LSU seems resolute on adding one quarterback to its 2016 class.

The question now is whether Scott bites.

LSU loses WRs coach http://sec.news/20uyWVY

QuoteLSU wide receivers coach Tony Ball is leaving the team to pursue other opportunities, the team announced on Saturday.

LSU hired Dameyune Craig as wide receivers, head coach Les Miles announced Sunday. He's the second assistant football coach hired by LSU in two days, joining running backs coach Jabbar Juluke on the staff.

Quote"Dameyune is a quarterback by nature so he's going to be a tremendous asset to us in all phases of the passing game," Miles said in a release. He will take the place of Tony Ball, who was LSU's wide receiver coach for one season.

Craig joins LSU after serving three seasons on the Auburn staff as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for three years.

"My decision to make this career move is in no way a reflection of Auburn or the Auburn family," Craig said in a release. "It is strictly a professional decision. It's about growing as a coach and, hopefully, one day becoming a head coach."

Craig played quarterback at Auburn from 1994-97, where he still holds numerous Auburn passing records, including completions (216) and passing yards (3,227) in a season as well as a single-game record for most net yards gained (445 vs. Army in 1996; 75 rush, 370 pass).

QuoteTigers reached a three-year contract extension with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

Cameron's current contract was set to expire on March 31 and the offensive coordinator's status was in flux after LSU's offense hit a wall during the second half of the regular season. The Tigers finished the season ranked 44th in scoring offense with 32.8 points per game and 39th in total offense with 437.3 yards per game.

Tigers passing more; Jennings, Guice absent

QuoteLSU coaches broke down videotape of other teams' offenses during the off-season, and they'll spend more time than ever before on the passing game this spring than ever before, Miles said Monday.

"We're taking an inordinate amount of time at the beginning of practices to set up, technically, our throwing game," the coach said. "Let's just say we're starting practice throwing the football. Some of our meeting time is donated to (throwing the) football."

Miles said last month that LSU would visit other schools to study their offenses, and that the team would change how it approaches the passing game during spring drills.

"We had some schools visit us," Miles said. "We did some off-season - very little time - studies. Brought in film, cut it up and really did some good work on some opponents and some guys who throw the football really well."

Quarterback Anthony Jennings and running back Derrius Guice were not at Monday's first practice, and Miles said he's unsure if Jennings will join the team this spring. The coach said he's "hoping" Guice will begin practicing this spring at some point.

They were two of about "10-12" players, Miles said, who missed the opening day of drills. Miles attributed the absences to injuries or academic issues.

Miles seems excited about the direction his team's aerial attack is taking during spring practice.

Quote"I think Brandon (Harris) is probably the starter and I think Danny (Etling) is coming like heck," Miles said, according to The Advocate's Ross Dellenger.

Etling, a Purdue transfer, seems to be pushing Harris during spring ball and could create a competition for the starting quarterback job. Harris completed 53.6 percent of his passes for 2,158 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions last season.

Overall, Miles seems pleased with how the passing game is progressing.

"More consistent throwing the football than we've been," Miles said, per Dellenger. "Real talented young receivers that will be fun to watch play."

Cam Cameron's three-year extension will pay the LSU offensive coordinator $300,000 less than he made in 2015...

QuoteCameron, 55, made $1.5 million last year, but will make $1.2 million in 2016 after his contract extension was approved by the LSU Board of Supervisors on Friday. His salary will rise to $1.25 million in 2017 and $1.3 million in 2018, although there is an additional $125,000 available to Cameron per year in incentive-based pay.

In 2015, LSU finished sixth in scoring in the SEC with 32.8 points per game, a significant improvement from the 27.6 points per game in 2014 that was second-worst in the conference.

Much of the focus this spring has been on LSU's alleged passing game.

Quote"I think we went back and looked at what we did with Jarvis (Landry), Odell (Beckham), Zach (Mettenberger)," Cameron said, via Dellenger. "Now, Zach was just a pocket passer. It was a little bit easier to practice the passing game when you weren't working on zone read, out-of-pocket, mobility throws. With Zach, you had no boots and nakeds, basically no sprint-outs, no zone read. We were able to hone in on a very specific part.

"What's a little bit different now is our guys aren't 6-5. The pocket passing game is not our strength. Now, we've kind of tweaked it. The practice schedules are very similar now to what they were then. We still do some of the zone-read stuff. Brandon's obviously good at it."

Miles: Brandon Harris is 'ready to be the quarterback'

QuoteBrandon Harris seems to have established himself as the clear leader in LSU's quarterback competition.

Harris passed for 227 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions Saturday in LSU's full scrimmage, handling the lion's share of the snaps with the starting offense...

"Brandon probably had a sharper scrimmage the scrimmage before, but he still threw for [227] and threw for a good percentage," Miles said. "I just felt like he's kind of ready to be the quarterback."

Miles said Purdue transfer Danny Etling completed 10-of-15 passes for 66 yards in the scrimmage, while redshirt freshman Justin McMillan was 5-for-8 for 34 yards.

LSU's offense totaled 649 yards of offense in the scrimmage (406 passing, 243 rushing), but Miles had good things to say about his defense...

Is LSU's revamped offensive philosophy just a passing springtime phase? @TigerDroppings  http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2016/04/is_lsus_revamped_offensive_phi.html ...

QuoteMost spring games are mundane affairs with coaches revealing very little to opposing eyes, especially now that the SEC Network televises the spring games of all 14 league members.

Next Saturday when LSU stages its spring game at 3 p.m. in Tiger Stadium, there's several sneak peaks on the agenda of all Tigers' fans, like new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda's 3-4 scheme, incoming freshmen debuts from linebackers Devin White and Michael Divinity, offensive line chemistry and finding a kicker who can consistently boom kickoffs that force touchbacks.

But the question with a decade of hang time – "Can LSU ever commit year-to-year to pass consistently enough from a myriad of formations to create diverse playcalling?" – is still up in the air.

With 18 returning starters, the most in the SEC and probably among FBS schools, possessing a passing game to make plays when needed so defenses can't stack the line to stop returning Heisman Trophy running back Leonard Fournette is the glaring roadblock between the Tigers and a College Football Playoff berth.

Dating back 13 years to LSU's 2003 national championship, seven of the nine SEC teams that won national titles averaged 200 or more yards passing per game. LSU's 2003 Nick Saban-coached Tigers averaged 201.8 yards passing (193.8 rushing) and Les Miles' 2007 champs averaged 225.3 passing (214.1 rushing).

Five of the last seven seasons under Miles, LSU has averaged fewer than 200 yards passing, including 180 last season and 162.9 two years ago.

2007 team started a run of five of the last seven SEC national championship teams averaging more than 200 yards passing and 200 running.

QuoteIt may have just been a spring fling, but the passing game beat the running game, 43-39, in the LSU spring game at Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Tigers attempted 43 overall passes to 39 rushing attempts as the Purple team beat the White team, 17-7, in front of about 18,000.

Starting sophomore quarterback Brandon Harris completed 11 of 15 for 106 yards without an interception or touchdown and showed better touch and accuracy on his short game. He was 8 of 11 for 56 yards against the first team defense. Backup quarterback Danny Etling, a junior transfer from Purdue, hit 6 of 12 also for 106 yards with two interceptions and a 70-yard bomb for a touchdown to freshman wide receiver Dee Anderson that traveled more than 50 yards in the air.

In all, LSU, which used six quarterbacks, completed 22 of the 43 passes with two interceptions for 282 yards as Harris and Etling played for both teams as did much of the overall roster.

Meanwhile, the Tigers, who focused much more on the passing game than the running attack during spring drills after their second straight poor passing season, rushed for a mere 105 net yards. Sophomore Heisman Trophy candidate Leonard Fournette gained 49 yards on eight carries in the first half with a 2-yard touchdown run and took the second half off. His brother, freshman Lanard Fournette, added 31 yards on six rushes, and freshman Derrius Guice gained 17 yards on three carries.

QuoteThe addition of more spread principles, a prominent short passing game and a heavier dose of overall passing is exactly what three-star wide receiver Al'dontre Davis is looking for in his college.

"I have heard that they started spreading it," Davis told SEC Country. "It opened my eyes to the idea of staying in The Boot a little and staying a Louisiana boy."

Much of Davis' interest in LSU stems from his strong relationship with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and first-year receivers coach Dameyune Craig.

QuoteFans are calling for change after LSU's middling offensive performance in a season-opening 16-14 loss at Wisconsin, but all they will get for now is a tweak.

Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron is heading back up to the press box for games after Les Miles' decision to bring all assistant coaches down to the sidelines this season proved to be a short-lived one.

"We did not get as much information from the box as we would have liked, and Cam is pretty good, has a good view of offense and defense and can really tell what's going on very quickly from there as opposed to having it relayed, especially in between calls," Miles said. "So, we look to reverse that, and we feel like there's two young quarterbacks that can really help Brandon off the field as well as (receivers coach) Dameyune Craig who played it. We feel like we would reverse that step there and put him back in the box."

The reason cited for bringing Cameron downstairs was to give him a chance to be more hands-on with quarterback Brandon Harris after a successful trial in a 56-27 Texas Bowl win over Texas Tech. However, it appears at this point that success had more to do with the utter ineptitude of the Red Raiders defense than anything that may have occurred on LSU's sidelines.

The Hat thinks the offensive line is fine.  His only change is to start Maea Teuhema at right guard for Josh Boutte, who is suspended for the Jacksonville State game.

IMO Les Miles is probably done at Lsu. The only way he can save his job is to win out and go to the playoff. That's a tall order considering Alabama is still Alabama and who knows how good the Hogs will be by November. Then, if by some miracle they win out, they would have to win the Sec championship game. With Brandon Harris at the helm they are seriously one dimensional. One dimensional won't cut it especially when that dimension is 3 yds and a cloud of dust.
