NotJerryTipton is a spoof of the dean of beat writers covering SEC sports. Definitely not a homer, the real Jerry Tipton does have one of the better columns summarizing what is happening in college basketball (published on Sundays).

QuoteEarlier this week, the mother of prep star Trey Lyles said that she and her family were "attacked" by Indiana fans when the youngster decommitted from IU. This just goes to show the passion and love that Indiana fans have for their beloved Hoosiers. While UK likes to bill itself as the "Greatest Tradition in the History of College Basketball," one would be hard-pressed to find a group of fans as dedicated and intense as Hoosier fans...

On Tuesday, Trey Lyles committed to UK over Louisville. This does not bode well for Kentucky. The fact that UofL was right there in Lyles' recruitment, and that he almost picked the Cards over the Cats is surely a harbinger of things to come...

On this date in (pick a year), Tom Crean was creepy.

Though the season has just begun, UK fans have to be disappointed with head coach John Calipari. Last Spring, Coach Cal opted to kick point guard Ryan off the team, and banished him to Georgia State. Calipari then decided to cast his lot with the unproven Andrew Harrison. So far, so not good. In his opening game, Harrow went for 20 points, 6 assists and 1 turnover. Then, against SEC Vanderbilt (the same Vanderbilt who broke Kentucky's heart in the 2012 SEC Tournament), Harrow had 27 points, 4 assists and a single turnover. Compare this to Harrison, who managed a mere 8 points (vs. UNC-Asheville), 2 assists (vs. Northern Kentucky) and 1 rebound (vs. Michigan State). Bet most Cat fans would love a do over.

QuoteIn UK's first 3 games of the season, Julius Randle has been absolutely dominant, averaging 24 points and 14 rebounds per game. This does not bode well for Kentucky. No UK team has ever won a national championship while having a true freshman putting up those kinds of numbers. For example: The Cats' most celebrated freshman ever, Anthony Davis, was only able to manage 14 points and 10 boards a game...

On this date in 1947, Louisville was on its way to its first of the 5 national championships they claim, which the Cards would punctuate by beating Indiana State in the NAIA Tournament finals.

Tuesday's game against Texas-Arlington saw the lowest attendance for a UK home game at Rupp Arena in the John Calipari era. While it's clear that Kentucky fans are fed up with this team, it is not clear exactly why. Is it the closer than expected exhibition games? Is it the poor free throw shooting against UNC-Asheville? Is it the loss to Michigan State? Is it the fact that UK isn't even the highest rated team in the state? All of the above. In speaking with a few of the several million Kentuckians who chose not to go to the game Tuesday...

QuoteLast Sunday, Belmont shocked 10th ranked North Carolina. This was the last thing Kentucky fans wanted to see. UK, of course, plays Belmont on December 21...

Against Robert Morris, Aaron Harrison scored a season high 28 points on 4 of 7 shooting from three point range, and 10 of 10 shooting from the foul line. Against Texas-Arlington, James Young scored a personal best 26 points while going 5 of 10 from deep, and 5 of 7 from the charity stripe. This does not bode well for Kentucky. In relying on perimeter players to have career nights to beat inferior opponents...

On this date in 1992, had you told an Indiana fan that the Hoosiers would only go to one Final Four in the next 20+ years, while winning no titles, he probably would have laughed at you. Then cussed at you. Then...

During its furious comeback against Cleveland State, several UK players (namely the Harrison twins, James Young and Julius Randle) could be seen and heard calling for the ball. To hear some Kentucky fans tell it, this is a good thing, as it evidences the fact that these players, though less than a month into their college careers, are already showing the leadership and fearlessness it takes to be champions. However, there is also a contrasting view. A more accurate view. The correct view. This view is that this UK team is populated by selfish, me-first players who want nothing other than to shoot, to score, and to end up on SportsCenter. It may be different if players were calling for the ball so that they could get an assist. Or if they were demanding to set a back screen. Or that they were asking to come out of the game so that one of their teammates may get an opportunity to shine...

QuoteAfter losing to Kentucky, Cleveland State assistant coach Jermaine Kimbrough pointed out on Twitter that the Vikings got "cheated" in Rupp Arena. Not surprisingly, he wasn't the only one who felt that way. Notoriously objective Doug Gottlieb also voiced his displeasure at the officiating, by sarcastically mentioning that "it is now illegal to post up against Kentucky." He also accused UK's guards of "hooking... gross" and even went so far as to call Kimbrough "a hero" for pointing out Kentucky's rule-breaking. Gottlieb wasn't alone, either. Professional journalist and handsome man-about-town Pat Forde said that Kentucky's "win" was tainted, and said it was "not a good look" for the Cats or college basketball as a whole. Forde was so outraged over the whole affair that he tweeted about the UK game 4 times on Monday, while remaining completely silent about Louisville's loss the day before...

On Monday, UK rallied from a 10 point deficit in the final 8 minutes to beat Cleveland State, 68-61. This does not bode well for Kentucky. The Cats played awful for the first 32 minutes of the game, so by winning, they will assume they can do this every time out. Had they lost, however, they would have learned a valuable lesson: Play better.

On this date in 1957, Kentucky was on its way to the school's 4th national championship but it didn't really count because it was before basketball was fully integrated.

The 2013-14 season is here, and Kentucky will spend the entirety of it trying to atone for the disaster was the 2012-13 season.

QuoteOn Monday, John Calipari announced on Twitter that he had a long telephone conversation with former president Bill Clinton. Bad move, coach. The conservative sector of Big Blue Nation was incensed, confused and betrayed, wondering why Coach Cal would want to consort with a Democrat like Clinton. Then, apparently not content with angering just half the UK fanbase, he alienated the other half later that day by announcing that the Kentucky team would be visiting the George W. Bush Presidential Library...

Last week, UK sophomore Willie Cauley-Stein averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds and 8 blocks per game. However, he failed to win SEC Player of the Week. Instead, the honor was shared by Florida's Casey Prather (23 points and 5 rebounds per game) and Mississippi State's Craig Sword (18 points and 1 assist per game). Obviously, in order for UK to reach its goals, WCS has to play to his full potential. However, as long as his career best efforts (such as the 15 points, 8 rebounds and 9 blocks he posted vs. Providence) don't even garner consideration as the SEC's best, this team is a long way from realizing its dreams. When Cauley-Stein is overshadowed by a little-known guard who scored 12 points in one game and had 0 assists in the other game, things must change for the Cats. Quite simply, if he can't post better numbers than 15/8/9, then title #9 will remain a pipe dream.

Last week, Aaron Harrison was named SEC Freshman of the Week. This does not bode well for Kentucky. Basketball, of course, is a team game...

On this date in 2011, Kentucky had just come off a last second win over North Carolina and was preparing to travel to Bloomington to face Indiana. It was IU's biggest game in a decade and UK's biggest game in a week.

If anything has been made clear so far this season, it's that John Calipari could learn a thing or two from Rick Pitino. Specifically, he could learn to schedule better. To date, Louisville has played one team ranked in the top 83...

Quote*Blue Christmas: In 2009, John Calipari replaced Billy Gillispie as UK's head coach. This does not bode well for Kentucky. Since then, Kentucky has a record of 102-14 with players recruited by Gillispie on the roster. However, the Cats have struggled to a 29-15 record without any such players on the roster. Yes, you read that right. UK has lost more games in the past 44 contests than they lost in the preceding 116. Did Kentucky move too quickly in ditching Gillispie?

On this date in 2008, Kentucky was 8-3, just like this year. They lost at North Carolina that year too, just like this year. In other words, get ready for another trip to the NIT...

Going into the Belmont game Saturday, Dakari Johnson had only played 7 minutes in the prior 11 days. In fact, if you exclude the UNC game, he hadn't played even one second since logging 11 minutes against Boise State on December 10. Predictable whispers about disgruntlement and a transfer elsewhere ensued. "That's kind of baffling because he's loved Kentucky from Day One," said every person interviewed for this article. Of course, UK fans are known to be impatient, unreasonable, mean and not all that intelligent, so you can hardly blame Johnson for looking to get out. He undoubtedly came to Kentucky with hopes of being Calipari's next one and done, but Coach Cal's refusal to give Johnson a chance to showcase his skills has caused the freshman to put his champagne wishes and caviar dreams on hold for the time being. For now, he'll just have to remind himself of the lyrics to that old Jimmie Rodgers ditty from the 1920's: "I'm a thousand miles away from home just waiting for a train."

On this date in 1991, Kentucky earned its 16th all time win over Louisville. The Cards hope to return the favor [this afternoon].

The 2013-14 season is here, and Kentucky will spend the entirety of it trying to atone for the disaster was the 2012-13 season.

QuoteOn Monday, Louisville coach Rick Pitino announced that junior Chane Behanan was dismissed from the team. Pitino refused to say exactly what it was that Behanan did to warrant losing his place on the team, but if one reads between the lines, it's simple: Pitino was so disgusted by Behanan's failure to score a point against Kentucky's overhyped freshmen that he told the youngster to get the hell out...

After UK's lackluster win over undermanned Louisville (Kevin Ware was out with an injury and Akoy Agou would have played more had he not been indefinitely suspended), UofL fans took to the internet to cordially make the same observation that millions of basketball fans were making during the game, probably: The refs cheated for Kentucky. Bear in mind that this was not just some random fan crying foul, either. It was a well respected web log (also referred to as a "blog") doing so...

On Saturday, UK beat Louisville 73-66. This does not bode well for Kentucky. In 28 previous seasons, Kentucky beat Louisville. In 24 of those seasons, the Cats failed to win the national title. Statistically, then, this means that UK now officially has just a 14.3% chance...

On this date in 1977, Kentucky beat Georgia in overtime, 64-59. However, the celebration following that win was short lived, as the Cats would go on to find themselves on probation twelve years later.

On Wednesday, North Carolina lost to Miami, bringing the Heels' record to 10-5, and 0-2 in the ACC. Kentucky fans must absolutely hate to see that. For UK to get into the NCAA Tournament, the Cats will need to end up with an impressive "strength of schedule." (This is a metric that measures a team's schedule strength.) Earlier in the season, Kentucky played North Carolina. So every time the Heels lose, Kentucky loses too. Also, with UNC's profile continuing to plummet, the UK/UNC rivalry doesn't look as good as it once did. For that reason, I suspect Big Blue Nation will be putting its collective weight behind North Carolina the rest of the year. The same reasoning applies to Louisville. For that win to mean anything, Louisville will need to get back in the top 10. As such, there are probably Kentucky fans all over the Commonwealth saying "Go Heels!" and "L1C4!" at this very moment.

Despite the fact that they have been playing together for almost 4 months now (practice began in late September), Kentucky has only won one true road game all year. By my calculation, this means that this UK team is only averaging one road win every almost 4 months. This is an astounding feat, given the fact that the Wildcats entered the season ranked #1 in the country.

While it's true that UK has only lost two home games in the past 5 seasons, the fact of the matter is that the Cats won't be playing any NCAA Tournament games at home. To get ready for the Big Dance, these Kiddie Cats need to learn how to play in opposing arenas full of hostile fans...

When Arkansas hosted UK Tuesday, the Razorbacks had a "white out," whereby they handed out white t-shirts to all the fans, and had coach Mike Anderson donning a white tie. This does not bode well for Kentucky. John Calipari likes to crack that everywhere the Cats play, the opposing team has "a red out, a white out, a blue out, an orange out," etc. In other words, the only way UK's opponents can coerce any fans to attend games featuring Kentucky is to bribe them with swag (this is shorthand for "stuff we all get").

Apparently, Kentucky's tire fire of a season last year, which culminated in a humiliating loss to Robert Morris in the National Invitation Tournament, has resulted in people not wanting to see them play. in previous years, opposing arenas sold out whenever the Cats came to town. Nowadays, the only way fans will come see Kentucky is if they are bribed with clothing. It's sad, really.

On this date in 2020, that Arkansas fan who confronted Aaron Harrison should be up for a promotion at Dairy Queen.

After Kentucky edged Tennessee on Saturday, UT big man Jarnell Stokes said what most people around the county were probably thinking during the game: Tennessee is better than Kentucky...

166 games into his career at UK, Adolph Rupp had a record of 136-30. 166 games into his career at UK, John Calipari has a record of 136-30. This does not bode well for Kentucky. If the similarities between Rupp and Calipari are to continue, and there's no indication they won't, the Kentucky fanbase has an incredibly long title drought to look forward to. In his last 14 years at UK, Adolph Rupp failed to win a national championship. Not even Billy Gillispie can say he went 14 years at UK without winning a title. It's easy to say that the careers of Rupp and Calipari have little in common, but that simply isn't true. Consider: Adolph Rupp was a white male. John Calipari is a white male. Adolph Rupp was married. John Calipari is married. Adolph Rupp had children. John Calipari has children. It's almost eerie, to be honest. But that's not the worst part...

When UK played at LSU Tuesday, only about 6,000 fans showed up. This isn't the first time this year that the Cats have been greeted by a less than full house on the road. When they played in Dallas in December, only a fraction of Cowboys Stadium was filled. What gives? Are opposing fans less than impressed by this latest group of Kiddie Cats? It sure seems that way. Some Big Blue Defenders would argue that winter storms had an impact on the small crowds referenced above, but that excuse simply doesn't pan out. For one thing, basketball has always been played in the winter, and winter has always had snow storms. So why is this just now becoming a factor? For another thing, look at the 2008 SEC Tournament. Hardly any people showed up to watch Kentucky play Georgia in the quarterfinals in Atlanta that year, and there wasn't a snow storm in sight. In fact, it was relatively warm outside...

On Tuesday, Kentucky lost to LSU. Two days later, reports surfaced that the Harrison twins would not be entering the NBA Draft. Presumably, this means they are transferring. Though this hasn't been confirmed by the Harrisons themselves...

Yesterday, 5 star defensive tackle Matt Elam picked UK over Alabama. This was on the heels of the big announcement that UK is spending $45 million to build a new football training center and practice fields. This does not bode well for Kentucky. Clearly it shows that the school is emphasizing football at the expense of basketball. Could this be why the basketball Cats have underachieved this year, and have already racked up 5 more losses than Calipari guaranteed they would?
