A look back at the 2011 Statesman's Fab 55 list of recruits. #40 turned out to be the best https://shar.es/1hUsb8

QuoteThe Statesman examines its previous Fab 55 lists every January, giving that class five years to show its worth. In 2011, the state produced an abundance of blue-chip players. They just weren't who you, or we, thought they'd be.

Consider the stars of that class:

Johnny Manziel, who was described by former Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman as a combination of Cam Newton and Doug Flutie, turned out to be the gem of the class. He was No. 40 on the original Fab 55.

Before the recruiting process started, Manziel loved Texas and TCU. But neither school offered the quarterback from Kerrville Tivy a scholarship. So he committed to Oregon. Then Stanford tried to woo him. Finally, A&M offensive coordinator Tom Rossley talked Sherman into giving Manziel, who was thought to be too short and too unorthodox, a second look.

They met with the Manziels and pointed out how far away Oregon was from Texas. (The Ducks signed eventual Heisman winner Marcus Mariota instead.)

Mike Evans was a basketball player and long jumper dabbling in football during his senior year at Galveston Ball. Kevin Sumlin tried to recruit him to Houston. But Sherman enticed him to A&M. Evans became Manziel's favorite receiver. He was an All-American in 2013 and left for the pros the same year as Manziel, giving up his final two years of eligibility.

Tampa Bay selected him with the seventh pick of the 2014 draft.

IF WE COULD DO 2011 ALL OVER ...

In hindsight, these would've been our top 10 players on our 2011 Fab 55 list:

1. Johnny Manziel, Kerrville Tivy QB (Texas A&M)

2. Trevone Boykin, West Mesquite QB (TCU)

3. Josh Doctson, Mansfield Legacy WR (Wyoming, then TCU)

4. Mike Evans, Galveston Ball WR (Texas A&M)

Note: Only five of these 10 were even on our 2011 list — Manziel was No. 40, Amaro was No. 17, Clark was No. 32, Montgomery was 48th, and Diggs was seventh. The 247Sports composite rankings of 2011 listed Drango No. 32, right between Clark (31) and Montgomery (33), while Manziel was No. 63, Evans was No. 124, and Boykin was No. 125.

With a full year to recruit, Franklin landed 22 signees in the 2012 class that ranked 48th nationally by 247 Sports composite rankings

QuoteSome of Vanderbilt's top recruits of the 2012 class were long on talent but short on luck. Five of the top six prospects, according to 247 Sports ratings, had their careers trimmed by injuries or other circumstances.

Quarterback Patton Robinette left with two seasons of eligibility remaining due to concussions and his acceptance to medical school. Linebacker Jake Sealand's career also was cut short by injuries. Offensive tackle Andrew Jelks was an SEC All-Freshman honoree, but he missed the 2015 season with a knee injury and has one year remaining. Running back Brian Kimbrow was a playmaker, but he was dismissed from the team in 2014 and recently transferred to MTSU. Defensive end Caleb Azubike was a play-making freshman in 2012, but he never played a full season again. He missed three games in 2013 due to an injury, the 2014 opener for disciplinary action and three more games with a broken jaw during a frustrating 2015 senior season.

2012 VANDERBILT SIGNING CLASS

DE Torey Agee: Mostly played in 3-4 scheme. Played 23 games in three seasons. First major playing time came in 2015 with 17 tackles. Has one season remaining.

DE Caleb Azubike: McGavock product was a dynamic freshman, but his upside outweighed his consistency. Played 43 games with 120 tackles and 15 sacks.

DB Brandon Banks: Charged with rape of an unconscious female Vanderbilt student in 2013. Awaiting trial. Redshirted in 2012 and never played a game at Vanderbilt.

DT Ladarius Banks: Played 10 games at defensive tackle in 2013 and 11 games at fullback in 2015.

WR Cory Batey: Charged with rape of an unconscious female Vanderbilt student in 2013. Found guilty, but mistrial declared. New trial this spring. Redshirted in 2012 and never played a game at Vanderbilt.

OL Adam Butler: Moved to defensive line. Played 36 games (22 starts) with 78 tackles, 20.5 TFLs. Returns in 2016 as one of Vanderbilt's best players on a strong defense.

K/P Colby Cooke: Primary punter in 2014 with a 42.4-yard average, but has served in mostly backup role in rest of career.

OL Blake Fromang: Moved from tackle to tight end and back to tackle. Made seven starts at right tackle for an injury-plagued offensive line in 2015.

OL Barrett Gouger: 34 career games. Made 10 starts at right guard with 44 pancake blocks as a junior in 2015. Returns for the 2016 season.

LB Harding Harper: Played only four games combined over last two seasons due to injuries.

DB Paris Head: 16 games (three starts) in two seasons with three INTs. Left team at midseason in 2014.

LB Darreon Herring: 50 games (36 starts), 226 tackles. Among Vanderbilt's best defenders under two different coaches. In 2013, he had 84 tackles, second-most on team. In 2015, he had 64 tackles, also second on squad. Voted team captain as a senior.

OL Will Holden: 22 starts in last two seasons. Started 10 games at right tackle in 2014 and moved to left tackle for 12 starts in 2015, filling in for injured Andrew Jelks. Returns in 2016 as a versatile veteran.

OL Andrew Jelks: 2013 SEC All-Freshman. Started 21 straight games at both tackle spots. Missed 2015 with a knee injury. Has one season remaining.

RB Brian Kimbrow: Rushed for 748 yards, 6 TDs in two-plus seasons. Dismissed from team in 2014. Graduated from Vanderbilt and transferred to MTSU, where he will play the 2016 season.

OL Kevin McCoy: Served on scout team in three of four years on campus. Played two games as a redshirt freshman in 2013.

DB Torren McGaster: 37 games (23 starts) in three seasons and has one season remaining. Has 132 career tackles. Will enter senior year as one of SEC's top cover corners.

WR Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie: Charged with rape of an unconscious female Vanderbilt student in 2013. Awaiting trial. Redshirted in 2012 and never played a game at Vanderbilt.

QB Patton Robinette: 16 games (five starts). Passed for 1,096 yards, 7 TDs. Ended career with two years of eligibility remaining due to concussions and acceptance to medical school.

LB Jake Sealand: 28 games (six starts). 78 tackles in three seasons. Career ended prematurely by injuries.

LB Ja'karri Thomas: Played 34 games and recorded 60 tackles in three seasons, mostly as a reserve linebacker and special teams contributor. Has one season remaining.

DE Stephen Weatherly: Defensive end in 4-3 scheme and outside linebacker in 3-4 defense. Had 120 tackles, 27 TFLs, 11.5 sacks, 3 FR, 3 FF in three seasons. Left early to enter 2016 NFL Draft.

National Signing Day revisited:
Auburn's 2012 recruiting class
http://bit.ly/1m7ilKk   (Slide Show)

QuoteZeke Pike, 4-star QB prospect, left the program in June 2012 following an arrest for public intoxication. He transferred to UofL where he played TE in 2013 and did not return to school after another alcohol-related arrest in 2014. Pike transferred to Murray State where he was dismissed in 2015 after a drug-related arrest.

Every coach's first-year recruiting situation is different. Some had a couple months before signing day. Some had a couple weeks. Some inherited dumpster fires. Some were handed strong classes they just had to maintain and perhaps build on.

QuoteBret Bielema, Arkansas

When hired: Early December, 2012

2013 class rank: 23rd nationally, ninth in SEC, per 247Sports Composite.

How it actually turned out: Solid so far. The two highest-ranked recruits (tailback Alex Collins and tight end Hunter Henry) have been about as good as advertised. And a two-star recruit – yes, two-star – turned out to be second-team All-SEC this past season (receiver Drew Morgan). So did OT Dan Skipper, a three-star recruit in this class...

Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss

When hired: Early December, 2011

2012 class rank: 40th nationally, 13th in SEC, per Rivals.

How it actually turned out: Pretty good, considering the rank. During the group's time on campus the Rebels have won seven games, then eight, then nine, then 10 last year. Trae Elston, a three-star recruit, became a four-year starter and was named AP second-team All-American this past season. Mike Hilton, another three-star recruit, was a second-team All-SEC pick last season. Tailback Jaylen Walton was the Rebels' leading rusher in 2015. Quarterback Bo Wallace, a three-star recruit in 2012, was a three-year starter. Channing Ward, the highest-rated member of the class, didn't quite live up to the hype, but did have three sacks this past season. For all the hype that Freeze's next few classes received, his first one supplemented the team's impressive run.

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M

When hired: Early December, 2011

2012 class rank: 16th nationally, sixth in SEC, per 247Sports Composite.

How it actually turned out: Not that great. There are some starter but no members of the class have gone on to make the AP first or second all-SEC teams...

Dan Mullen, Mississippi State

When hired: Early December, 2008

2009 class rank: 25th nationally, 11th in SEC, per Rivals.

How it actually turned out: Excellent. The class was actually fairly well-ranked for Mississippi State, Mulllen benefitting from a relatively early hire, and groundwork done by predecessor Sylvester Croom. Four-star DT Fletcher Cox became a star, Jonathan Banks became one of the best defensive backs in the country, and several others (WR Chad Bumphis, DE Pernell McPhee, ILB Chris White) were key members of a team that went 36-28 over the next five years.

Re-grading the SEC's 2012 recruiting classes

Quote5. Mississippi State Bulldogs

2012 grade: C+ (13th)

Dan Mullen's hit rate was strong here: 13 of the 28 signees started at least 10 games and nine more played at least 20 games and completed their eligibility or are scheduled to do so next season, meaning more than three-quarters of the class has contributed. The foundation for the Bulldogs' 2015 starting defense comes from this class: Beniquez Brown, Richie Brown, Jefferson, Ryan Brown, Redmond, Nick James and Kivon Coman. Evans, the lone ESPN 150 signee in the class, left the team prior to 2014 and was one of only seven who transferred or didn't make it to campus.

13. Tennessee Volunteers

2012 grade: B- (8th)

2016 grade: F

Only five players from the class signed by then-coach Derek Dooley started double-digit games in their Tennessee careers. Two were short-stay junior college products (Patterson and McCullers) and another (Pig Howard) was dismissed from the team before his career ended. McNeil emerged into a four-year starter at safety. Attrition was the theme: 13 of the 23 signees either transferred, were dismissed or left the team, including all three ESPN 150 recruits (Howard, Drae Bowles and Dante Phillips)

How the SEC's top-ranked 2012 recruits panned out http://es.pn/23GKhqt

QuoteLet's take a look at how the top-ranked SEC recruits in the 2012 class panned out. All of the players below were ESPN 150 prospects ranked in the top 50 nationally...

No. 3 -- Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Missouri: The nation's No. 1-ranked receiver recruit was on his way to stardom in Columbia, catching 59 passes for 883 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2013 before running into off-field trouble

No. 5 -- Keith Marshall, RB, Georgia: Marshall, who arrived in the same class as Todd Gurley, showed promise as a true freshman but (759 rushing yards, 8 TDs) but injuries interrupted his 2013 and 2014 seasons

No. 6 -- Landon Collins, S, Alabama: Collins emerged into a first-team All-American in his junior season

No. 7 -- D.J. Humphries, OT, Florida: Ranked the No. 1 tackle in the class, Humphries played 29 games (started 19) in three seasons, one of which was cut short by injury. (First round draft choice)

No. 11 -- Eddie Williams, ATH, Alabama: Never played a down for Alabama. Williams redshirted as a freshman and was dismissed from the team the following offseason after being one of three players charged with second-degree robbery.

No. 17 -- Josh Harvey-Clemons, OLB, Georgia: After moving to defensive back and starting 11 games as a sophomore, Harvey-Clemons was dismissed from the team in February 2014 for a violation of team rules. He transferred to Louisville (see Prayer in Jordan Hare)

No. 20 -- Cyrus Jones, ATH, Alabama: Emerged into an All-SEC cornerback in 2014 and became a dynamic returner (he had four punt returns for touchdowns in 2015, an Alabama single-season record).

No. 21 -- Ricardo Louis, ATH, Auburn: Louis played 50 games and started 20, finishing his Tiger career with 98 career receptions, 1,338 yards and eight touchdowns. He finished 11th in Auburn history in career receptions

No. 22 -- Chris Black, WR, Alabama: Black caught 25 passes for 290 yards in three seasons at Alabama. An ankle injury ended his 2015 season prematurely and he has one season of eligibility remaining, but he'll spend it at Missouri as a graduate transfer.

No. 28 -- John Theus, OT, Georgia: A first-team All-SEC selection in 2015, Theus was a mainstay on the Bulldog offensive line as a four-year starter.

No. 29 -- Kwon Alexander, OLB, LSU: Was an impact player, emerged into a starter in 2013 and 2014 was an All-SEC pick in 2014.

No. 30 -- Brandon Greene, OT, Alabama: Became known in the Crimson Tide's 20-13 overtime win over LSU in November 2014, when he caught a 24-yard pass that led to the eventual game-winning touchdown. He hasn't been a starter but has played in 39 career games

No. 31 -- Geno Matias-Smith, CB, Alabama: Matias-Smith played a multitude of roles in the Crimson Tide secondary over the course of 54 games, 23 of which were starts

No. 33 -- Thomas Johnson, WR, Texas A&M: Johnson appeared in 10 games and was third on the team in receptions during the 2012 season (30 catches, 339 yards) but went temporarily missing two days after the Aggies' landmark win over Alabama. He withdrew from school the next month and didn't return to college football. Things took a horrific turn last year, when he was charged with murder.

No. 34 -- Issac Gross, DT, Ole Miss: Gross missed all but one game in 2015 because of neck surgery, but has been a contributor in his first three seasons

No. 37 -- Jonathan Bullard, DE, Florida: Bullard emerged into one of the SEC's best defensive linemen in 2015 and was a first-team All-SEC selection.

No. 42 -- Evan Boehm, OG, Missouri: Boehm has been a model of consistency and reliability. He started 52 consecutive games (every single Mizzou game during his time there), setting school record. Boehm spent most of his career at center.

No. 45 -- Shaq Roland, WR, South Carolina: In three seasons with the Gamecocks, Roland caught 56 passes for 891 yards and 10 touchdowns but left the program prior to South Carolina's 2014 appearance in the Independence Bowl

No. 46 -- Jessamen Dunker, OG, Florida: Dunker never suited up for the Gators, redshirting in 2012 before transferring out of the program in spring of 2013. [All-OVC]

No. 48 -- Channing Ward, DE, Ole Miss: Ward played in all 52 games of his career, and was long part of the defensive line rotation but didn't start a game on the defensive line until 2015

[Last but not least]
No. 49 -- Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama: Cooper set school records with 228 career receptions, 3,463 yards and 31 touchdowns and was a Heisman Trophy Award finalist in 2014. He was the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft

Signing day 2015: How'd the impact decisions from the SEC turn out?  http://es.pn/1PwPN8Q

QuoteDE Byron Cowart
ESPN 300 rank: No. 1
2015 season: Most of you know probably remember Cowart's name. If not because he was the No. 1 recruit in the ESPN 300, it was because of the drama that ensued his announcement. He put on the Auburn hat in the morning but didn't fax in his letter of intent until later that afternoon. It was a long day for Auburn fans. But for all the headache he caused, he didn't quite live up to the billing as a freshman. Cowart played in 12 games and finished with just six tackles. He also had six quarterback hurries but failed to register a sack or a tackle for loss.

DL Terry Beckner Jr.
ESPN 300 rank: No. 2
2015 season: It has been a roller coaster for Beckner over the past 12 months. Last February, he opted to stay close to home and sign with Missouri much to the delight of the fans. However, he struggled to adapt to the college game early in the season. Then around the middle of October, the switch flipped. In a four-game span -- all in SEC play -- he had 18 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks. But just as he was starting to become a force, his season came to a crashing halt when he tore his ACL. And to add insult to injury, he was arrested last month for possession of marijuana and suspended from the team indefinitely.

OL Martez Ivey
ESPN 300 rank: No. 5
2015 season: When Ivey chose Florida last February, he was immediately penciled in as a starter. [Knee surgery in August.] But the freshman started Florida's last eight games, including the bowl game, and was named to the All-SEC freshman team...

DT Daylon Mack
ESPN 300 rank: No. 6
2015 season: As if Myles Garrett wasn't enough to deal with for opposing SEC teams, Texas A&M added another top-10 defensive lineman in Mack last signing day. Mack chose the Aggies over Texas and TCU... Mack finished with 32 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

DE CeCe Jefferson
ESPN 300 rank: No. 9
2015 season: It's going to be hard for Jim McElwain to top his first signing day at Florida. He landed Ivey (see above), Jefferson, Antonio Callaway and Jordan Cronkrite, among others. All four made significant contributions as freshmen. Jefferson, ranked No. 9 in the ESPN 300, got stronger as the season went on and finished with 29 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He was one of three Gators named to the All-SEC freshman team. Fans love him now, but they were nervous when he waited until the following Monday after signing day to fax in his letter of intent.

Ole Miss's stellar recruiting classes for 2013 and 2016 shall forever be linked — for better or worse http://sec.news/206h83c

QuoteThe 2013 class, ranked eighth nationally by 247Sports.com, featured defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche (the country's top-rated talent at the time), wide receiver Laquon Treadwell (All-SEC performer) and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil (potential All-Pro someday) — all of whom could be top-15 picks in the upcoming NFL draft.

Ole Miss's 2016 class has one distinct advantage over the 2013 group: With quarterback Chad Kelly (4,042 yards passing, 41 total TDs in 2015; the SEC's most prolific passer) returning for his senior campaign, it's possible that QB Shea Patterson — the No. 1-ranked pro-style passer (according to 247Sports) — would redshirt this fall and then presumably run the Rebels offense for the following three years (maybe four).

Review of 2013 Vandy signing class: A record-breaking runner & building blocks of a defense http://tnne.ws/1SUlHyq

QuoteJames Franklin's recruiting peak as Vanderbilt's coach came in 2013, beginning his final year on campus before heading to Penn State.

The Commodores' 2013 signing class ranked 26th nationally in the 247 Sports rankings. A review three years later already shows about as many hits among the 2013 signees as Franklin's other two classes combined, and most reside on defense

The marriage of Franklin's recruits and Derek Mason's defensive mind proved to be productive in 2015, when Vanderbilt touted one of the SEC's best defenses. Nearly one-third of Vanderbilt's starts on defense last season were made by members of the 2013 class. Linebacker Zach Cunningham was an All-SEC first-team selection.

Statistically speaking, running back Ralph Webb already may be Franklin's best signee. Webb's 2,059 rushing yards stand as the most through two seasons of any player in Vanderbilt history.

Franklin's three signing classes included six quarterbacks. Most never took a meaningful snap at Vanderbilt, and none ever held the starting job for long. Johnny McCrary and Chad Kanoff were signed in 2013. McCrary started 12 games over two seasons under Mason, but he plans to transfer before the 2016 season. Kanoff never made it to campus...

2013 VANDERBILT SIGNING CLASS

DB Jalen Banks: Played 18 games, mostly on special teams, and made six tackles. Moved to RB before suffering a season-ending injury in 2015.

DB Tre Bell: 22 games (4 starts, all in 2014). Made 14 tackles last season. Announced transfer to Connecticut in January.

LB Nigel Bowden: 2014 Freshman All-SEC as redshirt freshman. Led team with 78 tackles in 2014. Missed 10 games in 2015 due to concussion symptoms.

LB Oren Burks: Moved to safety, where he's played 20 games with 16 consecutive starts. One of SEC's best underclassman defensive backs. Career-high 58 tackles and team-high two interceptions in 2015.

WR Carlos Burse: Redshirted during 2013 season and never played at Vanderbilt. Initially transferred to Southern Miss, then to Jones County (Miss.) Junior College and finally to West Georgia a month ago.

OL Delando Crooks: Promising young lineman played nine games as a redshirt freshman, but limited by injuries in 2015. Should compete for either starting guard spot in 2016.

WR Jordan Cunningham: 19 receptions, 150 yards in two seasons. Four-star signee took leave of absence in September 2014 and transferred to North Carolina.

LB Zach Cunningham: 2015 All-SEC first-team. 170 tackles, 23 TFLs in two seasons. Already one of best LBs in SEC with two years left.

OL Sean Dowling: Moved from tackle to blocking tight end. Played 10 games (1 start) in 2015, mostly on special teams and as a blocker in heavy tight end sets.

ATH C.J. Duncan: Team's most productive WR as a redshirt freshman, making 28 catches for 441 yards and four TDs. Missed entire 2015 season with an Achilles injury suffered in preseason camp.

DB Taurean Ferguson: 23 games (seven starts) with 43 tackles and two interceptions. A part-time starter in 2014 and served in cornerback rotation in 2015.

QB Chad Kanoff: Signed with Vanderbilt in February 2013, but then changed mind a month later and went to Princeton. Passed for 2,295 yards as starter at Princeton as a junior in 2015.

TE Nathan Marcus: 23 games (five starts) with 10 receptions, 90 yards, two TDs. Red-zone target in 2014, but inconsistent in 2015. Should have expanded role in 2016 after graduation of TE Steven Scheu.

QB Johnny McCrary: Passed for 2,518 yards, 15 TDs, 20 interceptions in 17 career games (12 starts). Scheduled to graduate and plans to transfer before the 2016 season.

K/P Tommy Openshaw: 20-of-30 FGs and 35-of-35 PATs as primary placekicker for two seasons. Averaged 40.9 yards per punt in 2015.

TE Mitch Parsons: Ranked No. 7 tight end nationally. After taking redshirt year, the Colorado native transferred to Colorado State.

WR Gerald Perry: Whitehaven High product redshirted in 2013 and then transferred to D-III school Rhodes College.

WR Latevius Rayford: Possession receiver. Played 29 games (13 starts) with 57 receptions, 530 yards and two TDs in three seasons.

DB Darrius Sims: Has been kick/punt returner, WR, RB and DB. Had two kick return TDs and one interception TD return in 2014. Rushed for 249 yards in 2015.

DE Landon Stokes: 22 games. Promising OLB in 3-4 scheme. Had 24 tackles, 3 TFLs in 2015, starting final five games.

TE Brandon Vandenburg: Charged in 2013 with rape of an unconscious female Vanderbilt student. Found guilty, but mistrial declared. New trial this spring. Three signees from 2012 class also charged. Vandenburg, a junior college transfer, never played a game at Vanderbilt.

DE Mack Weaver: Moved to tight end, but never played in two years. Transferred to Eastern Illinois, where he started three games as a blocking tight end in 2015.

RB Ralph Webb: Rushed for Vanderbilt freshman record 907 yards in 2014 and ran for 1,152 yards in 2015, the second-highest single-season mark in team history.

DB Ryan White: 21 games, 60 tackles. Played in safety rotation, as nickel back, punt returner and key special teams player. Voted special teams captain in 2015.

WR DeAndre Woods: Athletic TE who showed flashes as a play-maker (7 rec., 129 yards) before suffering season-ending injury in third game of 2015.

DT Jay Woods: Versatile DL has started 12 games combined at NT and DE. Made 55 tackles in 24 games.

DE Jonathan Wynn: 24 games (six starts) with 34 tackles. OLB as a freshman and DE as a sophomore. Compete for starting spot in 2016.

Top sleepers from 2012 SEC recruiting classes http://es.pn/1PPQqpR

QuoteJared Collins, CB, Arkansas: A product of nearby Tulsa, Oklahoma, Collins was a two-star recruit who was the 117th-ranked cornerback in the 2012 recruiting class. Since arriving at Arkansas, Collins has started 27 games for the Razorbacks and led the team in pass breakups in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. What's more, he still has a year of eligibility left, so he'll likely wind up being a three-year starter in the SEC.

Markus Golden, OLB, Missouri: A consensus three-star prospect out of Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College...

Mike Hilton, ATH, Ole Miss: A modest two-star recruit from Sandy Creek High in Tyrone, Georgia, Hilton was classified as an athlete and was the 166th ranked athlete in the 2012 class. He played every position in Ole Miss' secondary in his career, which consisted of 49 games and 40 starts. He was a second-team All-SEC pick in 2015

Torren McGaster, CB, Vanderbilt: McGaster emerged as one of the SEC's top cornerbacks in 2015 and hasn't attained All-SEC status yet. A three-star recruit who was ranked as the 77th-best cornerback in 2012

Jalen Mills, CB, LSU: A four-year starter in the SEC at a perennial power program ... that sounds like a four-star recruit, but in this case, it's not. Mills was a two-star recruit, ranked 126th nationally among cornerbacks out of DeSoto

Antonio Morrison, OLB, Florida: Morrison was a three-star recruit in 2012

Julien Obioha, DL, Texas A&M: Kevin Sumlin often joked that on signing day in 2012 "nobody asked me about Julien," which was true. The New Orleans Brother Martin High product was the 51st-ranked defensive end and a three-star prospect, but wound up starting every year he was on campus

Greg Pyke, OL/OT, Georgia: The 85th-ranked offensive tackle in the 2012 class, Pyke, a three-star prospect, emerged into a full-time starter the last two years (23 total starts), manning the right guard position in 2015, and was a second-team All-SEC choice in 2014

Jon Toth, OT, Kentucky: Hard to get more under-the-radar than Toth was in 2012, a two-star recruit and the 164th-ranked offensive tackle. A center, Toth made a team-leading 35 consecutive starts for the Wildcats at the completion of the 2015 season and can extend that streak in his final season on campus in 2016.
