Also likes Ulis over Andrew Harrison.

You know what happens if Ulis played 35 minutes a game on last year's team. I don't need to tell you.

#LSU committee approves Maravich statue  http://bit.ly/23TEYUE

QuoteAn LSU committee that approves statues and other honorifics for former athletes has unanimously agreed to erect a statue of basketball legend Pete Maravich on campus after years of debate over the proposal.

The LSU Athletic Hall of Fame Committee was expected to take up the Maravich statue plan after the university's Board of Supervisors recently expressed support and re-tooled the campus policy on student athlete statues.

Maravich, who died in 1988 at the age of 40, left college a few credits short of obtaining his degree to play professional ball. LSU's old policy required that anyone honored with a statue have earned a degree.

From today's Tribune: Former MU commit Punter thriving in senior season at Tennessee and will face Tigers at 2 p.m. http://www.columbiatribune.com/sports/mu_basketball/former-mu-commit-punter-thriving-in-senior-season-at-tennessee/article_cb201840-c63a-5bb5-9d4a-0b17b39def89.html ...

Quote

Surely Missouri basketball fans have wondered over the past two years what might have been if Frank Haith didn't leave the Tigers for Tulsa in April 2014.

Tennessee's Kevin Punter hasn't spent much time considering the alternative, even though he committed to play at Missouri less than two weeks before Haith's departure. The 6-foot-2 senior guard from the Bronx, N.Y., has been too preoccupied with his job as the Volunteers' go-to player and one of the SEC's leading scorers.

But Punter does acknowledge that in a parallel universe, he would be wearing a Missouri uniform when the Tigers and Volunteers tip off at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mizzou Arena.

"The only reason I wanted to go there was to play with and for Frank Haith," Punter said in a phone interview this week. "Obviously, if he stayed, I would have been a Mizzou Tiger."

Punter, who had just wrapped up a high-scoring sophomore season at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, was as surprised as everyone else by Haith's decision...

Missouri fans could torture themselves imagining Punter playing in the Tigers' backcourt. They could pull their hair out wondering what a guard averaging 22.4 points — 10th nationally and second only to Mississippi's Stefan Moody in the SEC — might have done to improve an anemic MU offense that ranks last in the league in scoring, second-to-last in field-goal percentage and last in 3-point field-goal percentage.

But too many variables have changed to arrive at a certain answer.

Punter isn't even playing for the same coach he signed with at Tennessee.

The school fired Tyndall after last season.

From @Strangemike44: A game I'd love to see — all-time Tennessee, LSU stars http://www.knoxnews.com/sports/vols/columnists/mike-strange/mike-strange-a-game-id-love-to-see--all-time-tennessee-lsu-stars-2c175ffd-85b8-1834-e053-0100007f1a6-369477842.html ...

QuoteBen Simmons makes his first and likely only appearance at Thompson-Boling Arena on Saturday.

...I wonder how Simmons would fare against LSU's all-time stars.

While we're imagining, how much fun it would be to watch the all-time LSU team take on the all-time Tennessee team?

Did you know Tennessee has produced six of the SEC's top 20 career scorers? No other school has more than three.

Here's a lineup, with a sixth man to spare:

Allan Houston ranks No. 2 (2,801 points); Ernie Grunfeld is fifth (2,249); Tony White sixth (2,219); Chris Lofton 10th (2,131); Reggie Johnson 14th (2,103) and Dale Ellis 20th (2,065).

Missing anyone? Only Bernard King, the greatest Vol of them all.

King, unlike the others, played only three years, in which he scored 1,962 points. He averaged 25.8 points and 13.2 rebounds for his career. So King is the go-to guy on the all-time Tennessee team.

Lofton is the SEC's all-time 3-point shooting king. Houston ranks fourth. Each hit a healthy 42 percent of his attempts.

Houston is also the SEC's No. 2 career free-throw shooter (minimum 500 attempts) at 84.9 percent. White is third.

Ellis, like King, was a two-time SEC player of the year and a consensus All-American.

That's a strong group. But get a load of LSU's crew.

Pete Maravich, in three years (1968-70), put up numbers that will never be approached. He scored 3,667 points, averaging a mind-blowing 44.2 points per game.

Chris Jackson (1989-90) averaged 29 points a game over his two seasons. He had four 50-point games. In three games against UT, Jackson averaged a Maravichian 44 points.

Shaquille O'Neal was the 1991 national college player of the year. As a sophomore he averaged 27.6 points and 14.7 rebounds. As a junior, 24.1 points, 14.0 rebounds. In SEC annals, he ranks second in blocked shots and first with six triple-doubles.

Modern fans are less familiar with Bob Pettit. Pettit was arguably the SEC's best player pre-1960. In the era when freshmen were ineligible, Pettit averaged 27.4 points over three years (1952-54). He played 11 more years in the NBA, averaging 26.4 points.

Pettit, like Maravich, is enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. O'Neal is a rim-shattering slam dunk for the 2016 class that will be announced this spring. King is UT's only rep in the hall.

Then there's Rudy Macklin (1977-81), LSU's forward who ranks 16th in the SEC with 2,080 points.

What a game it would be. I never saw Maravich in person, only on TV. King and Jackson are probably the two best SEC players I watched live.

Simmons will never show up on career charts, at least not as a collegian. He's of the one-and-done era...
