QuoteAlabama's Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division and the U.S. Attorney's Office in Birmingham have proven they are dead serious about protecting the state's whitetail deer from chronic wasting disease (CWD) this week, laying on a total of $750,000 in fines and restitution charges to two Northport, Ala., men who knowingly transported and received live white-tailed deer into the state - a violation of state law and the federal Lacey Act, which prohibits trade in wildlife, fish and plants that have been illegally taken, possessed, transported, or sold. The case has been working through the court for nearly a year.

In November 2016, Conservation Enforcement Officers with the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) arrested deer breeder Lewis H. "Sonny" Skinner and his associate Franklin Banks Loden for knowingly importing six live white-tailed deer into Alabama from a farm in Indiana. Federal and state charges against the men were announced in Birmingham on Monday, October 2, 2017.

Deer from the Midwest are highly valued in other parts of the nation because of genetics which cause them to produce exceptionally large racks, but concern for the spread of CWD has made interstate sales illegal in most jurisdictions.

If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.
