The short-term effects of the win are limited. Neither team is likely to flip a committed player from the other with a victory. But both schools stand to potentially gain long-term with an Egg Bowl win.

"In rivalry games, I've seen it plant seeds for younger players," said JC Shurburtt, the national recruiting director for 247Sports. "It could give you an early edge because the kid goes, 'I like the way they played the game.' When kids are seniors it comes down to more about relationships, but for younger kids it could make a difference."

With a win Thanksgiving night, Mississippi State gains bowl eligibility and limits the effectiveness of other schools' negative recruiting efforts. Dan Mullen can tell recruits Mississippi State is going to bowl games in four out of his five years at the helm. A win also quiets the critics that say Mullen's tenure in Starkville should be over soon.

For Ole Miss, it shows steady improvement from last year's 6-6 regular season record and likely locks in a quality bowl game. Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze can tell recruits that the Rebels are only a year or two away from competing for an SEC championship. The Rebels could continue to build on their recruiting momentum.

However, the game won't dramatically alter the recruiting landscape in Mississippi. Those that follow recruiting know that neither school could ever dominate in-state recruiting. There are too many geographical ties and long-standing relationships for either university to get totally shut out.

But there are ebbs and flows that might give one an advantage over the other.

Last season Ole Miss hit home runs with out-of-state recruits while State took some top in-state recruits.

247Sports national recruiting director JC Shurburtt on Ole Miss and State commits

For Mississippi State, Shurburtt really likes West Point running back Aeris Williams, who is ranked No. 3 in The Clarion-Ledger's Targeted 22.

"For Mississippi State my vision has always been a big downhill running back and a punishing run game," Shurburtt said. "(Aeris) is a big, powerful back like that with good feet and a wealth of offers. That's a key guy.

"I also love the way Mississippi State recruits versatility guys like Jamoral Graham, who can help out on either side."

Callaway offensive lineman Rod Taylor is one of the top offensive guards in the country and a freak athlete, according to Shurburtt.

"He could come in and play left tackle if he wanted to," he said. "As Freeze continues to solidify the offensive line, that's a heck of a haul to go along with the guys they got last year."

The Ole Miss commit is the top-ranked player in Mississippi, according to 247Composite.

Says Ole Miss has a slight edge overall.

Sometimes hard to get those Jersey boys to head too far south and west.


Yesterday on "Stoney and Bill", Hoke clarified that in recruiting every situation is different without commenting on the specific player.

Four-star quarterback prospect and Alabama commitment David Cornwell is done for the season after suffering a knee injury during a game two weeks ago, he confirmed Wednesday to AL.com.

Cornwell had surgery on his right knee, and the elite quarterback from Norman, Oklahoma won't play again this season.

"I will be ready and practicing in spring ball as well," Cornwell said.

Bama received two commitments this week from safety Laurence "Hootie" Jones from Neville High School in Monroe, La., and defensive lineman Jarren Reed from East Mississippi Community College in Scooba

"(Saban) told me he is too old to build another program," Jones, who chose Alabama over LSU, told TideSports.com. "He would rather keep what he has now. He wants to retire at a place where he loves. He doesn't want to go somewhere and try to rebuild. He may not be able to rebuild by the time he is ready to retire."

On Friday 6-2, 185 Jr. WR Cam Myers helped Oak Grove win its first football state championship. On Sunday Myers went public with a commitment to Mississippi State.

Myers had long been considered a Mississippi State lean because of his relationship with safeties coach Tony Hughes.

Williams, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound prospect, committed to Arizona State back in August, but then decommitted earlier this month.

"Everywhere," he said.

John Clay: Jamal Adams, son of former UK star George Adams, and godson of former UK head coach Joker Phillips, picked LSU over Florida, where Phillips is an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Out of Lewisville, Texas, Adams is ranked as the No. 3 safety prospect in the nation and made is announcement today at the Under Armour Bowl.

The Gators did turn around and get four-star defensive lineman Gerald Willis III out of New Orleans, though his mom said that "LSU is still No. 1."

The news even stunned Les Miles.

About two weeks ago, George Adams dialed the LSU coach to tell him this: Adams' son, Jamal, would be committing to the Tigers over Florida, where Jamal's godfather, Joker Phillips, is recruiting coordinator.

"Les Miles was so shocked and surprised I was coming," Jamal Adams said.

Adams made his commitment public Thursday during the second quarter of the Under Armour All-America Game at Tropicana Field.

Adams, a five-star safety from Hebron High in Carrollton, Texas, was one of seven players who committed on national television...
