Meet Your Maker

When the Rivals.com basketball rankings for the 2020 recruiting class were released last week, no player made a more dramatic move than Makur Maker, who went from unlisted to the No. 15 overall spot in the country.

Those who have seen him play recently expect Maker to rise even higher.

Though the 7-footer has a familiar last name — he's the cousin of NBA player Thon Maker and former top 100 recruit Matur Maker — and began his high school career in California, he's still a bit of a mystery to recruiting analysts.

Makur Maker took a similar path to American basketball as his cousins, leaving his native South Sudan at an early age and spending much of his childhood in Australia before starting his freshman season in the United States. From there, he moved to Canada — staying largely under the college basketball recruiting radar —

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes on Wednesday signed the highest-rated recruiting class in the history of the recruiting ratings era, with five-star shooting guards Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson, along with four-star small forward Corey Walker.

On Saturday, the Vols (2-0) face No. 20 Washington (2-0) in a 5 p.m. Eastern Time tipoff in the James Naismith Classic at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

Here's everything Barnes said before practice Thursday about his star-studded signing class, the matchup with Washington and the progress of his team through two games:

"We are excited. It has been a long time in the process. We were able to identify these guys a couple years ago and develop a relationship with them. Not only watch them grow in basketball, but watch them grow in a lot of different areas. We knew from the beginning that we wanted them to be part of our program. Five-star combo guard Jalen Green has had a change of plans.

Green, the top uncommitted player in the 2020 class, was originally set to make an announcement regarding his future on the court on April 15, but on Friday he let it be known that his decision has been pushed back. Fear not, Auburn fans; Green is waiting out much longer, as his announcement was only pushed back two days and will instead take place Friday, April 17.

6-foot-5, 170-pound guard postponed announcement will take place (sic) at 3 p.m. CT live on his Instagram account. Green is expected to choose between Auburn, Memphis and Oregon -- should he decide to attend college --

For the seventh time in 12 years, John Calipari and Kentucky have reeled in the nation's No. 1 class. UNC (University of No Class) and Duke come in at Nos. 2 and 3.

Calipari's blockbuster 2020 recruiting haul includes two of the top seven players – BJ Boston and Terrence Clarke — plus four other prospects ranked between No. 28 and No. 58.

Kentucky's dynamic and impressive class is accented by a big transfer haul that includes Olivier Sarr from Wake Forest, arguably the nation's top transfer, Davion Mintz and Jacob Toppin, the brother of future lottery pick Obi Toppin.

The Wildcats had finished No. 2 in the rankings each of the past four seasons.

Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, Arizona, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State round out the top 10.

Moussa Cisse's decision will have a direct impact on the 20-21 college basketball season

Five-star big man announced last week that he plans to reclassify from the 2021 class to 2020 and will be eligible to play next season. Cisse is expected to make his college choice in the next few days from a list that includes Florida State, Kentucky, Memphis, Georgetown, LSU, and Georgia.

The 6-11 Cisse has been compared by multiple well embedded moles to former Texas Tech forward Tariq Owens and will have an immediate impact defensively at the front of the rim next season.

If he opts for Kentucky or LSU, either team could instantly become the favorite to win the SEC in 20-21 ahead of Tennessee.

Four-star recruit Frank Anselem recently narrowed his list of schools to four and is set to make a college announcement on Wednesday.

Anselem, an athletic center that finished his high school career at Napa (Calif.) Prolific Prep, will choose between Georgia, New Mexico, San Diego State and Syracuse.

Early Tuesday morning, I logged a Crystal Ball pick for Syracuse.

Anselem was previously a member of the 2021 class, but opted to reclassify to 2020 shortly after the high school season. Anselem ranks No. 182

In terms of where Kuminga might end up, I logged a Crystal Ball prediction for Kuminga to land in the professional ranks. If Kuminga opts for that route and for the NBA G League, he would be the fifth prospect to do it this year.

While it hasn't been determined where Kuminga would rank in the 2020 class if he makes that move nor will it.

Tigers are viewed as the favorite, but from which program?

Wildcats are among Cisse's finalists, the favorite going into his decision are the Memphis Tigers. The LSU Tigers were previously seen as the favorites, but Memphis has picked up steam in recent weeks.

Coincidentally or not, Cisse was set to commit on June 5th, but he ended up postponing it on the same day Oklahoma State was hit with a postseason ban next season for their involvement in the college basketball corruption scandal. LSU is another school tied up in that and could get hit even harder than the Cowboys, so perhaps that's why Memphis has surged into the lead...
