I am tired of them getting to issue statements or have someone issue them for them and not have to answer questions.  Make them bring their butt to the media room and take questions just like the coaches and players have too.  We know they are protected by their long time buddy the supervisor of officials who give them and allow them to keep these jobs. Its time they have to be held as accountable to the public as anyone else.

jm

Bad idea, but I understand the reason you would want that

What I'd like to see is a website that grades officiating in multiple sports. If you had a service that actually garnered a reputation for independently grading officials... it would change the entire conversation.

Imagine Rivals or 247 sports... but all they did was grade and evaluate officials in college football and college basketball. Then give a grade for each official. That way fans could see who was officiating their games, what their strengths and weaknesses were... and perhaps what their historical trends were officiating your teams games.

It's probably impossible, because how do you turn a revenue on a service that takes countless hours of evolution with much needed manpower? I have no idea. But it'd be amazing.

ShadowHawg

They can't be such a huge part of the game and not have to answer some questions from professional media members. There isn't any harm in that at all.

Not to mention they are being paid not volunteering.

Why is it a bad idea? It's very necessary and it's something we don't currently have. The NBA started the whole last 2 minutes of the game thing, that's essentially what we're talking about here

98hogs

Sounds like someone needs to draw up a business plan and rate the officials like recruits are rated.  Sell ads and pay for the site.  Lanny, need extra revenue,  here's the idea !

I agree refs need to take questions from the media. Won't happen though. They will continue to leave after the game and go back to their bunker in Siberia next to Snowden.

Why, so people that have had the opportunity to see super slow mo 4k hd replays can see that on a shot a guys arm was barely grazed and start asking why no foul was called?

Now, on calls/no calls like the goal tend in the Gonzaga game, or the charge/block/walk no call yesterday, then yea, okay, some explaining might be in order, but no one who thought it was a bad call will be soothed by the answer.

I still suggest everyone join some association and call basketball on some level next year. You can get paid a little to get your horizons broadened on just how hard it is at the level you will be calling, much less at the highest collegiate level.
People ask me what I do in winter when there is no baseball.  I will tell you what I do. I stare out the window, and I wait for spring.

Isn't there a website out there already that tracks officials at least somewhat?

sounds like to me if we are going to the trouble to replay at all, someone needs to be able to see these 4k slomo replays. Why replay at all if you have tools at your disposal to get the call right more often but you don't use them? Replays on a prison TV are a waste of time if that's as good as they can do

Please tell me why?  They make around $2000.00 to $3000.00 a game in power 5 conferences.  If they are the best in the profession then have then stand up and face the music

I agree. There needs to be more accountability.  If coaches and players have to face the media then the refs should also.

There needed to be a press conference after this screw job:

Just let coaches call out refs bad calls in press conference instead of punishing coaches.

That is the problem.

It is absurd that you place a gag orders on coaches whose teams are victims of bad officiating.

Where else in the world is there an occupation that is more protected?

And if the Refs want to make a statement in response to a coach then you allow them to talk to the media as well.

I realize it wouldn't change anything, but I would have liked to hear an answer to this question:

I'd like to see stats on fouls called by game against NC and their opponents for all NCAA tournament games going back to Dean Smith's first year. Same for Duke and Krzyzewski.

It's one thing to see the bias when your team is the victim, but it's another when you've watched the tournament for 40 years and see the same thing year after year.
Life is too short for grudges and feuds.

I will say another thing...."If you decide to go into the kitchen be ready to face the fire.".  If you want to ref games then have the stones to face it like a man.

Because they have to retain the ability to make a strong decision while limiting the input from the home crowd as much as possible. You think calls are bad now just add in personal threats and public humiliation.

And the baseline ref says " my view of his feet were blocked " & everyones just going to accept that and it go, right?

Really no need to have the 3 officials from yesterday to face the media.

1 of the officials yesterday has over 30 years of officiating experience.  Additionally, he officiated in the NBA earlier in his officiating career.  Yesterday, it was the 79th game he has officiated this season.

1 of the officials yesterday, it was the 84th game he has officiated this season.  Last season, he officiated 87 games.

1 of the officials yesterday, it was the 71st game he has officiated this season.

It was a very experienced officiating crew yesterday.  Better than the garbage officiating we see in SEC conference play from officials Doug Shows, Tom Eades, and Doug Sirmons.

Why don't we apply the same logic to players and coaches?  Our coaches and players receive countless death threats and harassment and still have to face the media to answer questions.

Are officials so limp wristed and weak that they can't face the music when the f up?

They are bad enough already, I don't see how having a set of officials out there with whistles but afraid that if they blow them they are going to be grilled by the media on why this was or wasn't called, helps anyone.

Let's put this another way. When it comes to public scrutiny, larger populations can apply more pressure. Schools with smaller populations and press corps would wield far less influence. Any review needs to come from  someone who's only agenda is to create a fair and impartial game.

I was responding to an earlier post where someone was contrasting yesterday's crew to these three.  The poster was saying yesterday's crew was experienced.  I was pointing out the three guys mentioned are experienced as well.  Never said Shows, Eades, and Sirmons were any good.

Besides extensively officiating NCAA Division 1 Men's basketball, Simpson also officiates in the WNBA during the summer.  According to this 2012 article, he had just recently worked his eighth straight WNBA Finals.

While it is true that Shows, Eades, and Sirmons have officiated Final Fours, they shouldn't have got a Final Four assignment.

It will be difficult to find some who are worse than those 3 (Shows, Eades, and Sirmons).  Karl Hess and Roger Ayers are also just as bad as those three.

I have been a HOG fan for 54 years. We have lost at least 3 football titles and more than 1 final 4 appearances since I have been watching, because of officiating. I coached for several years. The refs can dictate whether you win or loose. And they did in the NC game. NC was the home team, and it was officiated like that. When you play on the road, you have to beat the refs to. Because any calls will most likely go against you. Tradition has a lot to do with this. If you come from a winning school, calls will go in your favor.
Only way to win is to over come. The other team and the refs.
We really had a good year. Best I seen the hogs play in years. We started the game tight, to fast. Its good to be quick, but to fast is not good. The first 10 minutes and the last 4 minutes lost us the game. Missed to many shots to start, got behind, then expended to much to recover. The last 3 we was spent. Bad call at the end sealed it for the home team, which is what the refs, wanted, and the POS media wanted. I am proud of the boys, it was a fun year. First time in along time I enjoyed watching them.

Porked Tongue

Professional gamblers and sportsbooks have plenty of data on refs.

Bo Boroski's Avg. Fouls number (37.94) is really no different than Tony Greene's Avg. Fouls number (37.69), and Greene is regarded as being one of the best officials in NCAA Division 1 Men's basketball.

How many games they called is I immaterial to their accountability to the coaches and teams.

They wield too much power to not be publicly accountable.

Pretty sure Officials can make 3 figure incomes when they are at the level of doing NCAA games.  There should be accountability when they make calls which impact the outcome of a game.  I've encountered enough arrogant officials to know that they get a God complex when they are officiating.  They should have to explain why or why not they call or don't call something.  How in hades can they look at a replay and not see the ball coming off the defenders fingers and begin spinning sideways?

I hope they make more than a 3 figure income. Held accountable how? Also, a good call can impact the outcome of a game. It is possible the replay system in use did not have all the camera angles we got to see on tv. If you did not have a view from the shooters right side, you would not see the tip on that shot.

To be fair, they were able to review one in our game and still got it wrong. No excuse with replay to get it wrong. The replays were clear on who touched it.

the replays shown on tv from one angle were clear, but no one is sure the refs get the same views we do. I know they use a separate viewing system, and it looks like the provider of that system provides different video feeds than what is on tv.

Then they need to see what the people watching  TV saw! Seriously put the best damn view on there! Use both systems! IDC but if millions of people around the country can see the ball was tipped and those 3 can't something needs to change. We don't live in the times of fuzzy TV reception and antennas. We have dozens of cameras at the biggest sporting events that can catch anything in HD from different angles.
