Stuck with a three-game losing streak and a 12-point halftime deficit, the Texas Longhorns finally emerged from their inertia Friday night.

Texas defended with more intensity, shot with increased accuracy and scored 51 points in the second half to beat Alabama 77-68.

"The first five minutes of the second half, they came out with a different type of energy and focus," Alabama coach Avery Johnson said. "It seemed like they were a step quicker. Give them credit. This is a team that lost three games in a row. They were desperate."

Dazon Ingram led Alabama (4-3) with 12 points and had Avery Jr. had 10.

Though sick yet sleep-deprived, UK abstains from excuses after annual loss to UCLA

Quote
Calipari insisted that the illness that hit his team earlier in the week was unrelated to Saturday’s 97-92 loss to UCLA.

“No, no, no,” Calipari said. “Had nothing to do with anything. The factor in the game is they played better than us and they played harder in than us.”

Senior Derek Willis said that five or six UK players had not been feeling well since the team returned from the Bahamas. Among those players were Isaac Humphries, Sacha Killeya-Jones and Dominique Hawkins, he said.

“I’ve had nausea and stuff,” Willis said. “Last night I was running from my bed to the toilet like the whole night. Just one of those things.”

But Willis made sure reporters understood he did not mean to suggest illness was the reason Kentucky lost.

“I haven’t been to sleep in, like, 20-some hours,” he said. “I didn’t go to sleep last night. Not to make excuses.”

Perhaps in hopes that a lighter load would help players deal with illness, Calipari canceled the usual pregame shoot-around.

Calipari second-guessed that decision.

Quote
Besides Kentucky’s 96-73 win over Hofstra in Brooklyn on Sunday, more college basketball notes:

▪ Four SEC teams went on the road against tough competition and played well, just not well enough to win.

1. North Carolina had to rally from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat visiting Tennessee 73-71.

2. Florida State held off No. 21 and visiting Florida 83-78.

3. Alabama put up a respectable effort in Eugene before losing to Oregon 65-56.
Any chance Avery Johnson’s club of pulling the upset died behind the three-point line. Bama was 2-of-19 from three.

4. Ole Miss lost 80-75 at Virginia Tech. Sebastian Saiz scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Rebels in a losing cause.

Quote
Originally, the game was planned to open the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum, next door to Hofstra’s campus in Hempstead, on Long Island. Instead, it was played Sunday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. And while Hofstra (6-5) briefly appeared to have the slimmest of chances, trailing sixth-ranked Kentucky by a 3-pointer with just over three minutes remaining in the first half, the Wildcats (9-1) went on a 26-3 run over seven minutes and cruised to a 96-73 victory.

“We played 33 minutes of great basketball,” Gustys said. “Really, we can be proud of it. Seven minutes, we had a bad stretch.”

Unfortunately for Hofstra, those seven minutes were all it took to expose the chasm in talent separating the teams. And for all the excitement of playing highly ranked team, in an N.B.A. arena, in a nationally televised game, the occasion also brought undue stress.

Kentucky routinely draws dozens of pro scouts to its games, and that meant Sunday’s outing provided Gustys with the kind of stage that games against Sacred Heart cannot create. That was why, as Mihalich juggled ticket requests and the difficulty of trying to plan for teams like Columbia and St. Bonaventure with the Wildcats in the back of his players’ minds, Mihalich felt the need to have a talk with Gustys, who entered Sunday leading the nation in rebounding, at 13.5 a game.

“He loves the lights in a good way,” Mihalich had said after the Pride’s win against Columbia in November. “He’s fearless. He can’t wait to play against Kentucky, but I’ve got to make sure he doesn’t get psyched out.”

Gustys had promised not to try to play above his ability, even with the opportunity to elevate his pro prospects. Before he arrived at Hofstra, Gustys, who is Lithuanian, had played at the prep powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, and he has participated in international competitions against some of the United States’ best young players.

“I don’t have nothing else new to add to my game,” Gustys said. “Grab every single rebound, play hard and try to score. Nothing new, just the same old me with more energy and more hard work.”

Eastern Illinois' win at Mizzou was the first win by an OVC team over an SEC team since Murray State beat Auburn on Nov. 15, 2012.
