QuoteEverybody knows Jimmy Sexton on the college football side of things.

And he has some basketball clients, too.

But coaching searches in this sport that annually delivers March Madness typically feature a handful of less-famous agents -- most notably Bret Just and Jordan Bazant. There's also Will Reece and Jason Charney, Dennis Coleman and Jason Belzer, Mark Carmony and Spencer Breecker, Rick Giles and a handful of others. And when I asked Bazant for the biggest change he's noticed over the past decade, his response was a predictable one.

"It's the amount of people who want to get into the business," answered Bazant, a Vanderbilt graduate who signed his first college basketball coach in 2003. Bazant joined WME earlier this year and now has a list of clients that includes Mississippi State's Ben Howland, North Carolina State's Mark Gottfried, Notre Dame's Mike Brey, Iowa's Fran McCaffery, Rutger's Steve Pikiell, Iowa State's Steve Prohm, Arizona State's Bobby Hurley, Rhode Island's Dan Hurley, Georgia's Mark Fox, Cincinnati's Mick Cronin, Creighton's Greg McDermott and Ben Jacobson.

According to Bazant, his profession is more crowded than ever. But, everybody agrees, he and the Bret Just are at the top of it in terms of the quality of the clients they represent.

QuoteFormer Alabama basketball player and coach Mark Gottfried has been fired at North Carolina State, but will finish out the season, the school announced Thursday.

Gottfried's dismissal comes a day after the Wolfpack was routed 97-73 at home by arch-rival North Carolina to fall to 3-11 in ACC play. N.C. State is 14-13 overall, and likely to miss the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.

"Mark and I met today to discuss the future direction of our program," N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow said. "While it has long been my practice to evaluate the body of work at season's end, in reviewing the overall direction of our program, we believe a change in leadership is necessary moving forward. Our focus now remains on supporting our student-athletes and staff over the final weeks of our season."

QuoteThere's also some competition for NC State here, as LSU, Missouri, Washington, Illinois and Arkansas (considered 50–50 to open) could also make a run at [Gregg Marshall].

QuoteIt's pronounced: "KAHN-zo"

Rhymes with Gonzo.

Mentions of the name seem to be occurring more often as the area's depressing college basketball season nears its final stage, March Sadness. Missouri and Illinois fans should be wishing the whispers of their team potentially making a run at the man turn out to be more than empty chatter. Two once-proud programs in need of an overhaul, and the same coach belongs at the top of both hot boards: Cuonzo Martin.

If the Tigers and Illini can find a better realistic candidate than California's coach, I'll listen. But my guy checks plenty of boxes.

He's young yet still improving —

"Recently, Thad and I had a great discussion regarding the future of our Men's Basketball Program," Smith said. "Thad's record at Ohio State is an outstanding 337-122; a winning percentage of .734. He is the all-time wins leader and owns the record for most games coached at Ohio State. His teams have won five Big Ten titles, and made nine NCAA postseason appearances.  What Thad's teams at Ohio State have accomplished – both on and off the court – is highly commendable.

"While we are not currently where we aspire to be with our performance on the court, Thad understands better than anyone that component has to improve.  I am confident in his leadership to return the program to the winning ways that we have all enjoyed during his 13 year tenure.

"We have had tremendous success with Thad as our basketball coach. His commitment to developing young men in a holistic way and running our program with the highest of integrity continue to be hallmarks of his leadership."

Sean Woods Pleads Guilty to Misdemeanor Assault charge http://kentuckysportsradio.com/main/sean-woods-pleads-guilty/ ...

QuoteThe battery charges stem from an incident while coaching Morehead State at the University of Evansville.  Two players accused Woods of abusing them in the locker room at halftime.  Woods was suspended, then resigned a month later.

The guilty plea will enter Woods into a six-month diversion program.  The charges will be dropped once the program is completed.

Who would be in line to replace Crean...and actually be an improvement?

Hope for Free Hoiberg, or maybe Billy Donovon? Just not seeing good names out there at the level Indiana wants.

Indiana athletics needs to say something about Tom Crean, one way or the other

Whatever the decision may be, it's time to make it

QuoteThe season is over. There are no more games left to be played. There is nothing left to be distracted from. Indiana basketball has to say something about Tom Crean's future in Bloomington. Soon. Today. Five minutes ago. Right now.

That hasn't happened yet. So it might be time to say something.

These are things you know, it needn't be written into any lede, or anything of the like: Speculation around Tom Crean has been ramping up since February, reaching its fever pitch as the team stumbled through the end of the regular season with a 10th-place finish to show for it. There was a semi-quick Big Ten Tournament exit. There was an NIT something-of-a-beatdown, with condition that they don't have to show their faces in Bloomington to compete. Such speculation, vitriol, anger is showing no signs of quieting down any time soon. The situation at-hand is not one that can be sat through quietly until next year. With three years left on his contract, Indiana University must decide to either commit to Tom Crean with some sort of extension or move on.

And that decision needs to happen soon. I'm not talking "back of the Bible" soon, but practicably soon. "What are you up to this afternoon?" soon. In a different, far more preferable universe, it would have already happened.

To do neither sends its own message...

Not Jerry Tipton‏ @NotJerryTipton 17h17 hours ago

Waaay too early to be jumping to any conclusions about whether Crean can get the job done at Indiana.  Needs another 10 or 15 years, IMO.

Indiana never recovered from firing Knight and never will be back to that level.   Arkansas did the same thing with Nolan.   Only a few legends.   Coaches now more interested in pr and fundraising.   too many bosses.

This is so dumb. Cuonzo couldn't recruit and was in the NCAA play-in game with three NBA players.

IU has a good history in basketball. They've won 5 titles spread out over many decades. They are like everyone and have to have a good coach but they are the type of program that can attract a good one. I thought Crean would get the job done there to their expectations but so far he's been behind that level. I still think he's a good coach but might need to go elsewhere. IU can get back to the elite level easier than some with the right coach.
If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.
