How each SEC team got its nickname (not to be confused necessarily with mascot)

QuoteA&M's official website states that "an Aggie is a student at Texas A&M."

"A&M" no longer stands for anything.

During the Civil War, Cornelius Vanderbilt gave some of his ships for use by the Union, which earned him the nickname "The Commodore."

Rebels, the nickname at Ole Miss, came about through a contest in 1936. The student newspaper at Ole Miss, the Mississippian, held a promotion to try and name the athletic program. Out of a list of 200 nicknames, the top 5 were sent to news personalities to vote. Out of 21 respondents, 18 picked "Rebels."
