Archie Manning honored by National Football Foundation

OXFORD - Former Ole Miss quarterback Archie Manning will receive the National Football Foundation's gold medal to honor his leadership and reputation, the NFF announced Tuesday.

"Archie Manning became an icon as one of the greatest players to ever set foot on the gridiron, and he subsequently used his standing to become one of the game's greatest ambassadors," NFF president and CEO Steve Hatchell and in a statement.

"The entire football community has been blessed by his enormous contributions, and we take great pride in having him as our chairman. He has earned this honor many times over, and we are extremely proud to add his name to the esteemed list of past NFF gold medal recipients."

He capped his junior season with a Sugar Bowl victory in which the Rebels upset Arkansas 27-22 in 1970.

No date was set on Thursday for Los Angeles Rams running back Tre Mason's trial on the charges stemming from a traffic stop and his subsequent arrest in March.

California-Irvine. The Los Angeles Daily News and the Orange County Register reported this week that Mason's status for training camp still was "to be determined," according to an unnamed team official.

The former Auburn standout was arrested on March 5 after a traffic stop in Hollywood, Fla. According to the police report, Mason would not identify himself after being pulled over for going 75 mph in a 35-mph zone, and he would not get out his car when asked to do so. A Taser was used to remove Mason from his car, and he was tased again before being taken to a hospital.

Mason was charged with four misdemeanors -- resisting an officer/obstruction without violence, reckless driving, failure to register a motor vehicle and possession of marijuana in an amount less than 20 grams. Mason also was cited for failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle.

Mason did not participate in Los Angeles' offseason program. Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the running back had been excused from attending for "personal reasons."
