EastexHawg

Not during Arkansas' time in the SEC necessarily, but if every school could put its all-time starting five in a time machine and make them 21 years old again LSU might be the best program in the country.

Shaquille O'Neal
Bob Pettit
Pete Maravich
Chris Jackson

I don't care if you plugged in jbcarol to play in the frontcourt with Shaq and Pettit, that would be an almost impossible lineup to beat.

Jerry Tipton: Who would be on UK basketball's Mount Rushmore?

Quote1. Adolph Rupp. The Founding Father of UK basketball. No Rupp, no Big Blue Nation.

2. Cliff Hagan. Like Rupp, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. A five-time NBA all-star, he later was UK's Director of Athletics.

3. Frank Ramsey. Like Rupp and Hagan, a Hall of Famer. He played on seven Boston Celtics teams that won NBA championships. The Celtics retired his No. 23 jersey.

4. Dan Issel. Like Rupp, Hagan and Ramsey, a Hall of Famer. The program's all-time leading scorer.

The Sports Illustrated profile of Rex Chapman is now online http://bit.ly/1IGU2xg

QuoteSeth Davis' profile of Rex Chapman for Sports Illustrated hit the newsstands, and now, it's finally online. Davis profiles Chapman's 15-year addiction to prescription pain killers and how that led him on a shoplifting spree which ended in his arrest in September.

Rex has since entered rehab and is opening up about his struggles...

Chapman admits that a lot of his problems began when people criticized him for dating an African American girl while he was at UK...

Eddie Sutton, the Wildcats' coach then, says, "I don't remember that happening. It was a long time ago, but I just don't remember that."

Fans get selfies, relive memories at @VandyMBB alumni game. http://tnne.ws/1T6AJSG

QuoteMore than 70 former players from a half-century span returned to Memorial Gym for the event, and 21 took the court in the game.

Ryan French, from Manchester, was only 2 when Perdue was named SEC Player of the Year in 1988, but he stood in an autograph line to get a selfie with his grandfather's favorite player.

"I was super super young when he was at Vanderbilt, but he's a legend," French said. "To this day, if basketball is being talked about, my granddad has a story about Will Perdue. So seeing him today was important to me."

Billy McCaffrey, the 1993 SEC Co-Player of the Year, was a big draw at the autograph session...

"I wanted to come to the first one, but I just couldn't make it. But when (Vanderbilt director of basketball operations) Dan Cage called me this time, I jumped at the chance," McCaffrey said. "It feels really good to be back. They still love their hoops here."

"Hawkins is the most deadly piece of basketball machinery we have ever seen.  We have yet to walk in when he couldn't do some entirely unconventional thing with a basketball-something we hadn't seen before.  Shag's style of play is unique.  It's either the most countrified version of Dr. Naismith's brain-child ever to appear in public circles -- or it's so metropolitan that New York isn't big enough for it yet."  ... played professionally with the Birmingham Vulcans in the Southern Professional Basketball League for two seasons in 1947 and 1948 and in the American Basketball League with teams from Moline, Ill., and Wilkes-Barre, Pa... "When we heard our 1928 team had reached the finals in Atlanta we made arrangements with railroad people in Montgomery to stop their fast freight train in Auburn.  It did stop and had 25 or more extra empty box cars courtesy of the railroad and about 400 students (we had only 1500 total in school) got aboard.  We arrived in Atlanta the next AM in time to clean up, storm the town and take the roof off the Tech Gym the next night (literally) when Ole Miss beat us.  However, we won the battle of Atlanta that night."

Rich Valavicius '78-80  transferring following his sophomore season at Indiana University ... was a captain both seasons for the Tigers ... averaged 14.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and an incredible 39 minutes per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the field as a junior in 1978-79 ... was a member of Indiana's undefeated 1976 National Championship team (who is the only former SEC player to play on an undefeated national championship team?) ... only played 17 games in his senior season in 1979-80 as he missed the final 11 games after sustaining his second head injury in a four-week period ...

Louie Dampier's devastating road to Basketball Hall of Fame http://cjky.it/1XEcmeY  via @courierjournal

Indy Star

QuoteThe photo, half a century old, still tells a story of a teenage orphan, a basketball superstar, who by 18 had lost his mother and his father.

And it tells a story of why Dampier may be the only man to ever play the game of basketball who, deep down within his soul, secretly hoped he would never get into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame means being in the spotlight. And Dampier – who will be the first Indianapolis-born player enshrined Friday into a hallowed place every athlete dreams of – despises the spotlight.

Dampier is a self-proclaimed and well-known introvert.

"The happiest that Louie is is when he's out riding his lawnmower and doesn't have to talk to anybody," said Dan Issel, who played on the ABA's Kentucky Colonels with Dampier for five years and was his roommate when the team traveled...

****

It wasn't always that way.

Two years before the photo was taken, Dampier was an outgoing, 16-year-old, happy-go-lucky kid attending Southport High School. He was the hometown hero at a time when basketball stars at Indiana high schools were icons.

He loved socializing with friends, being a jokester.

Then one day, sitting in class – he doesn't remember whether it was math or English or history because everything in life suddenly became a blur – Dampier was called out.

His sister was there. She had unexpected and devastating news. His mother was dead.

"After my mom, of course, I was demoralized," Dampier said from his La Grange, Ky., home this week. "I can't explain exactly, the sadness and loss. I still can't explain it."

Dampier was one of the greatest to play in the ABA. He was one of only a handful of men to play all nine years of the league's existence. He spent his entire ABA career with the Colonels, finishing as the league's all-time leader in points (13,726), assists (4,044), games (728), 3-pointers (794) and minutes (27,770).

And now, Dampier is about to take the good – that Hall of Fame honor – with the bad. All that attention.

Another member of head coach Johnny Dee's "Rocket 8" team, he led the Tide to its first postseason ranking at No. 12 in 1955 before improving to a program-best No. 5 during the 1956 season, when he helped the team compile a 21-3 record and win an SEC title.

Erwin Dudley '99-03  SEC Coaches Player of the Year, AP 3rd Team... Averaged a career-best 15.2 points per game with 8.9 rebounds in 2001-02. Dudley's play that season helped the Tide amass 27 wins, the second-most in school history, to go along with an SEC championship and a No. 8 final ranking in the AP poll. Dudley's 8.9 rebounds led the SEC that season and he also led the SEC in rebounding as a sophomore and senior. He finished his career at Alabama ranked seventh all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding.

Brian Williams '96-99  Bama's ninth all-time leading scorer with 1,759 points. He was AP Hon. Mention All-American.

Ronald Steele '04-09  AP Hon. Mention... . Steele averaged 14.3 points per game with 132 assists and helped the Tide reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Steele was nearly automatic from the free-throw line, converting 89.2 percent of his attempts in 2005-06 and finishing his career shooting 86.7 percent from the stripe, the highest all-time mark in Alabama history. In 2006-07, knee injuries prevented Steele from becoming a multi-time All-American.

Bama's Top One-n-Dones

Collin Sexton '17-18  SEC Co-Freshman of the Year and AP Hon. Mention After his freshman campaign ended with Bama's first NCAA Tournament win since 2006, Sexton was on his way out of Tuscaloosa -- but not before changing the perception of the Crimson Tide on both the hardwood and the recruiting trail.

"He's made Alabama basketball a cool thing to high school kids, in the eyes of McDonald's All-Americans and Jordan Brand-game guys," said ESPN analyst Jimmy Dykes. "It's cool to go there because you're playing for an ex-NBA guy and Collin Sexton played here and you have momentum going now and street credibility now that you didn't have a year ago at Alabama and now you do."

"It gets us in the door with players on Collin's level and the caliber of player he is," Coach Avery Johnson explained. "Not only are we calling recruits, but they're calling us."

That may be more beneficial than the 19.2 points per game Sexton averaged, the honorable mention All-America citation he garnered and the tangible results he produced during his one season on campus.

In the NBA, Dykes predicts, Sexton will spread the gospel of Crimson Tide hoops with every split-second drive and fancy pass he makes.

"The value of a guy like Sexton is hard to put into terms," Dykes said. "But this guy is going to be a legitimate ten-year pro. So what impact he has on Alabama basketball I think will remain the next ten years or so, if not beyond."

Gerald Wallace '00-01 Drafted at age 19 by the Sacramento Kings, making him the youngest player in the franchise's 62-year history. In 2002, his rookie year, Wallace placed second in the NBA Dunk Contest.  He is scheduled to surpass $100,000,000 career earnings in '15-16 making him one of the highest paid former SEC players of all time.

Schea Cotton '99-00 F averaged 15.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg and was 2nd Team All-SEC... Former California High School POY had battled the NCAA and spent one season at Bama as a 21-year-old Soph. ... There is a documentary about his struggles https://scheacottonmanchild.com/pages/documentary.
