Who wins?

I don't think it would be a question if Alabama wasn't breaking in a new QB.  But since they are and it's the first game of the year, it will probably be a very close game.

If nothing else, it should be a defensive juggernaut.

As said above, bammer in a low scoring defensive struggle.

This will be interesting.  VaTech returns 8 starters on offense, but losing Darren Evans will hurt, especially for a team as run-oriented as Virginia Tech is.  Tyrod Taylor is very talented, but he is pretty inconsistent.  I think he is the X-factor.  If he has a monster game against Alabama's defense, then Va-Tech will win.

Another interesting situation is Greg McElroy.  It's going to be no picnic playing in the Georgia Dome (though Alabama will benefit from having played there twice last season).  If he struggles, I could see Saban give RS Freshman Star Jackson some PT.

Virginia Tech is breaking in a whole new linebacking corps this year.  Their sole returning starter from last season was demoted to the second team.  How they handle Alabama's run game will be important as well.

Both teams will probably try to pound the ball, so I do agree that it will be a defensive struggle.

Tech will win, but it won't be pretty.  17-13 or thereabouts.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

i need tech to lose....i'm thinkin its very possible for the sec to win every game this weekned then the story will be about how good the sec is instead of how boise should be able to play for the nc

I think it will be a replay of last year's Alabama-Clemson game, with Bama punching them in the mouth early with the passing game and playing ball control offense in the second half.  Some of you on here continue to underestimate Greg McElroy, as well as the fact that Alabama pretty much returns everyone 2-deep at receiver.  Also, they return arguably the most talented front seven in college football.

Alabama lost the most key player in any Saban defense, and will have a big step back early, in terms of defensive efficiency, particularly against the pass.

McElroy is less a problem to me, than the guys who are responsible for keeping his jersey clean.  The guy has talent, arguably more than JPW ever did-- but a lot of talent is hard to display when you are running for your life.

Rashad Johnson's graduation won't hurt the Tide defense as much as you may believe, as they return secondary personnel in Kareem Jackson, BJ Scott, Javier Arenas, Justin Woodall, and Phelon Jones.

The most key piece of a Saban defense is a talented Linebacker corps, and that is one area where they are filled with talent and experience with Hightower, McClain, and Reamer.

It's not.   Saban himself has said as much in the past about what makes his defense-- Rashad Johnson had the *sole* responsibility for calling and vocalizing both coverage and adjustments for Alabama.  Saban's defenses have an extensive track record at LSU on this count-- when he loses a starting FS, defensive efficiency plummets.    No one else played more than 5 downs with that responsibility for them last season.  It will be crushing, particularly early, but will improve as the season goes onward.

They will be better in the front 7, and even deeper in the DL than they were last year,  but it will not be close to the same Tide defense.

We'll just agree to disagree.  Like I say to all of my fellow Hog fans who seem to write off Alabama this season, underestimate Alabama at your peril.

Bama is going to be a major force this year.  Their D is big, fast, strong, athletic, etc, etc, etc and don't get me started on their running game.  If they don't have a Utah moment this year Florida is in for a contest.

Their defense had multiple blown coverages; an accurate QB would have given them a very rough time tonight.

Yes.
Va Tech is just a creation of Thursday night games and ESPN.
No match for the SEC.

The excuses will keep coming as Alabama wins.
