  • How about Nome or Barrow, AK?

Never made it further west or north than Anchorage but from the footage I've seen, Nome and Barrow would be great spots for jump starting a good case of hypothermia. :D

  • Have not and not really sure where those places are.  We took an Alaskan cruise last year and left out of Vancouver but got there a day early to look around.   Hit it during the Stanley Cup and that city was wild.  Became a Canuck fan on the spot.

Next year we'll allow a couple days in Vancouver and Anchorage to just mess around.  Rent a car and go where the spirit moves us to go.

Sorry. Whistler\Blackcomb is the largest ski area in North America straight up the coast from Vancouver about two hours drive and a beautiful drive with mountains on one side and ocean on the other. The resort is the best there is for mountains. If you ski the skiing is fantastic. As they say "It's worth the drive".

  • Man I wish I could go! It's been a while since I've been there. Have you been up the coast to Whistler\Blackcomb?
was in Whistler 4/19 - 4/21.  Good time, very laid back.

Congrats.  You are indeed in the coolest city in the U.S., with all due respect to those other fun places folks have suggested.

  • And will be in need of some good BBQ. Any suggestions? I'm not looking so much for ribs as I am pulled pork. Love me some BBQ nachos!

I've also heard of this underground italian family-style place. Cant remember the name of it, anyone know what I'm talking about? Is it any good?

  • I lived there for over 4 years and tried them all.

My favorite is Jack Stack.  They have locations at the Plaza, off Metcalf in Overland Park, and in Martin City, MO.

My second favorite is Oklahoma Joes.

That is the other one I couldn't think of.  I've not had it yet but a friend spoke very highly of it the last time he was there.

I have been to all of them also, and there are a ton of places.  I would have to agree if you are going to pick one your best bet is Jack Stack.

And Yes Gas station BBQ ain't bad.. ;)

  • I had a friend who lived there for a while and we went to these two places. I STRONGLY recommend both. Not barbecue but incredible meals.

  • I love Jack Stack. Haven't been to Oklahoma Joe's but everyone says it's great. Can't go wrong with Gates.

Just make sure you get the beans when you go to Jack Stack. They are unreal.

And if your going to KC, their/our claim to fame is brisket and ribs. I'd get some ribs and burnt ends if I were you.

Mmmm beans... I'll have to hop on that. And brisket sounds fantastic right about now. Is it lunch time yet?

The pork and beef burnt ends at Jack Stack are the best BBQ I've ever eaten.

Do they have meat in them, or are they just beans? It should be a sin to not have meat in your beans if you own a BBQ restaurant

No reason not to go there if that's what you want, but I don't like their sauce. Some people would bathe in it, though. To each their own.

Yep, and they cook the beans under the briskets, catching drippings.

    Giggity.

I actually think Oklahoma Joe's has the best sauce in KC, but the quality of meat and the atmosphere at Jack Stack are second to none.

You know, for me, the atmosphere at Jack Stack is a let down. It's uh...too clean. I like my BBQ places to greasy and old.

No biggie though, the food is incredible.

Have you tried the one in Martin City?  It is the original location and my personal favorite.  It's in an old building that has seen add-on after add-on.  Lot's of character.

  • The ORIGINAL Arthur Bryants.  I did not care for the Arthur Bryants out by the outdoor mall on 435.

Buca de Bepos italian place?  Not too bad.

Blanc and Bottles?  Get the blue cheese stuffed burger and Onion Rings.

It's the only one I've ever been to. I mean, it's not like KC Masterpiece, but it's not LC's or Arthur Bryant's, either. I guess it's in the middle.

  • Dude - if you want a chain-like BBQ experience, by all means go with Jack Stack or Gates.  The food is fine, and the restaurants are clean.

But if you want an experience with the best BBQ in KC by a long way, you have to go with Bryant's.  Seriously, it isn't even close.  I moved to KC 15 yrs ago.  I have tried them all.

Bryant's is #1 (slab of ribs or beef and a half with fries)
Oklahoma Joe's #2 (jumbo pulled pork or Z-Man)
Gates - #3 (meat plate, double beef no ham)

Forgot about LC's!  I ate so many LC's burnt ends tailgating before a Chiefs game that I had to slow down my beverage intake during the game!  Good stuff in a parking lot for sure.

I agree, I like Doc Davis's BBQ sauce but the restuarant is terrible and I think calling it the Applebee's of BBQ is very accurate. Once was enough it was like going to McDonalds if you like fish..

I hear the Z-man is great.

I like the meat at AB's, just don't like the sauce. And chain shmain, Jack Stack is awesome. I like Gates a lot, but not my favorite. They make a good brisket sammich.

I don't like Gates at all, and AB's would probably be 3 or 4 on my list.
