Lots of match ups between the top 15 teams.

Auburn plays both UGA and Bama.

Miami plays VT and ND.

OU and OSU play
its like that very first playoff poll with three sec teams in it. They all played each other so you knew the poll wasn't going to stay that way.
This is fun, isn't it.

How two of the top three teams losing shakes up the playoff race.

QuoteNo. 1 Georgia and No.3 Notre Dame lost on Saturday, which will obviously cause a shakeup in the College Football Playoff Rankings this coming week. That is a problem for another day. Today's problem is the CFP bowl projections and the New Year's Six games.

As it turns out, that is not much of a problem at all.  The only teams that lost unexpectedly this week among the 12 projected to be in the New Year's Six were Washington and Virginia Tech.  They have been replaced by Penn State and Auburn. The top four College Football Playoff semifinalists remain the same from my projections a week ago.

One thing this week's results did accomplish was clearing out the race for the four spots in the College Football Playoff.  For the three remaining undefeated major-conference teams -- Alabama, Miami and Wisconsin -- it is as simple as win and get in.  That is not going to be easy.

Alabama not quite done yet.

Scott McCrary‏ @ScottyMc71
Replying to @jppalmCBS

If Bama plays in the playoff 98% of the teams in college football should strike. The big 12 was forced to add a conference playoff game, even though they play everyone in the season. If you don't win your conference you shouldn't be in the CFP

Nobody forced the Big 12 to add a championship game.  This is not a tournament of conference champs.  It's the 4 best teams

QuoteStrength of schedule still figures to hold down Wisconsin, but as I have said before, I do not believe an undefeated, major-conference champion will ever get left out of the playoff.  Note that if Auburn beats Georgia, you can also expect the Tigers to be in the No. 3 slot [replacing Georgia].

Alabama still has a chance at the playoff, though.  The Crimson Tide will be the top one-loss team out of the playoff projection above.  It will be interesting to see what the committee does with the Tide this week.  However, being the top one-loss team does not mean that Alabama could not be jumped by a two-loss team.

Kirby Hocutt of the College Football Playoff committee explains why Alabama got in over Ohio State http://sec.news/2iG8dgq   #RollTide

Quote"We went with a one-loss Alabama team, losing in the final game to the No. 7 team in Auburn," Hocutt said. "More damaging was the 31-point loss to Iowa. The selection committee just favored the full body of work from Alabama."

Hocutt added that Alabama was clearly the No. 4 team in the country. Alabama lost 26-14 to Auburn, while Ohio State lost twice, 31-16 to No. 2 Oklahoma and 55-24 to Iowa, who went 7-5.

This is a statement by the committee in that it does matter how and who you lose to. This is the second year in a row that the Big Ten Champion has been left out of the playoff.

Alabama will take on Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.

The two worst losses any playoff team suffered during the regular season to date:

2014: Ohio State lost 35-21 to Virginia Tech in Week 2 (won CFP title as No. 4 seed)

2016: Washington lost 26-13 to USC in Week 11 (lost by 17 in CFP semifinals)

Kirk Herbstreit still passionately defends choice to walk off set after Alabama made College Football Playoff

QuoteKirk Herbstreit still is defending his choice to walk off the set after the College Football Playoff selection committee chose Alabama to make the Sugar Bowl.

We've known the Crimson Tide's place among the country's top four teams for weeks, but fans remain critical of Herbstreit walking off camera in the moments after he learned Alabama made the College Football Playoff instead of Big Ten champion Ohio State. Some have viewed the move as Herbstreit, a former Buckeyes quarterback, displaying his displeasure with the committee's decision to include the Crimson Tide in the top four.

Earlier this morning, Coach Saban was asked again about expanding the playoffs, and he still thinks it's a bad idea. https://trib.al/j1vbDt6

Quote-- On the likelihood of another high scoring game between Alabama and Clemson: Both teams can score points but the two defenses are first and second in scoring defense. They've had high scoring games the last few years but he said he's not good at predicting how much offense to expect.

-- There are usually six or seven plays that determine the outcome and you never really know when they are coming.

-- Asked again about expanding playoffs, Saban still thinks it's a bad idea.

-- Saban said his teams get criticized for being too "businesslike" because they take on his personality. "Quite frankly, I'm not always that way."

Did UCF deserve a spot in the College Football Playoff?

QuoteUniversity of Central Florida finished its season on a high note, defeating the Auburn Tigers in the Peach Bowl to finish the year undefeated. However, UCF will not be competing for a national championship -- despite being the only team to finish with a perfect record. Many believe the Knights should have been in the College Football Playoff on the strength of their record. Still, pundits argue UCF played a weaker schedule and is too untested to be included in the CFP.

8-team playoff 'not in the cards,' according to CFP director Bill Hancock

Quote"It would take a unanimous vote from all the conferences for that kind of movement to start," Hancock said, per The Sporting News. "Right now, that's not in the cards."

The four-team playoff will stay in place until 2025, which is when the original 12-year agreement expires.

Hancock also discussed the CFP committee's decision to include Alabama in this year's playoff, instead of Ohio State, which had a puzzling loss to Iowa during the regular season.

"Alabama lost its margin for error when it lost. They needed help, as we all would say, and they got that help," Hancock said. "The committee felt strongly that they were the better team."

Hancock also confirmed that Monday's National Championship Game between Alabama and Georgia will have Big 10 officials.

Brando on Alabama's privilege, why College Football Playoff should expand, how BCS was better

QuoteBrando -- who now does college football and basketball play-by-play for Fox Sports -- said that three "blue blood" programs are virtually "automatic" to make this year's four-team College Football Playoff. That's not good for the game, he said.

"I submit to you right now that Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson are almost automatic for this year," Brando said. "So that leaves only one other spot. It could be another team from the SEC, particularly as weak as these conference schedules or non-conference schedules are in the Southeastern Conference."

As he did in an appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show on the SEC Network last week, Brando cited weak 2018 non-conference schedules for SEC powers Alabama and Georgia. He also noted that with perennial opponent Tennessee currently struggling as a program, Alabama's SEC crossover games were not exactly worthy tests either.

But the biggest issue, he said, was the College Football Playoff selection committee's habit of giving the benefit of the doubt to so-called "blue blood" programs after they lose. As an example, he cited Alabama falling only to No. 5 overall (from No. 1) after losing by 12 points in its regular-season finale at Auburn last year.

"If you have a body of work over a long time, and a tremendous history, you're considered one of the blue bloods of the game, you're not going to fall as precipitously as others when you lose a game," Brando said...

Brando even argued that the BCS system -- which was in place from 1998-2013 and was charged with pairing only the top two teams in a national championship game -- was preferable to the current set-up. He cited the CFP's "nebulous" criteria, which requires only that the committee choose the four best teams in college football without being too specific as to how they might be identified.

Brando argued that the current system was "exclusionary" rather than "inclusionary." Teams without the historical pedigree of an Alabama or an Ohio State are at a disadvantage, he said.

"That's not what the College Football Playoff was put together to do," Brando said.

Bama is scheduled to play six games against SEC West opponents in 2018.

The Tide defeated Clemson in the National Semi-Final last season validating the committee's choice.

Lopsided games, schedule drag down CFP television ratings

QuoteESPN said Sunday that Alabama's 45-34 victory against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Saturday night drew a 10.4 overnight rating and 19 million viewers, peaking at 11.8 and 20.7 million early in the first quarter when the Crimson Tide jumped out to a 14-point lead. Alabama eventually led 28-0.

Clemson's 30-3 victory against Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl earlier Saturday drew a 10.3 rating and 16.8 million viewers, peaking at 11.2 and 18.1 million when the Tigers scored with 2 second left in the first half to make it 23-3.

Last season, when the semifinals were played on New Year's Day and Georgia and Oklahoma went to overtime in the Rose Bowl, the games averaged a 13.9 rating and 24 million viewers.

The best television ratings for the College Football Playoff came in the first year, when Florida State and Oregon played in the Rose Bowl and Alabama and Ohio State played in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 2015, and both games were competitive into the second half. ESPN drew record audiences of more than 28 million viewers and an average rating of about 15.

This year's semifinals topped only the second year of the playoffs, when the semifinals were held in the Cotton and Orange bowls on Dec. 31, 2015, a Thursday.
