Spurrier said he did not call a good game, that North Carolina's defense stopped them for the most part.

Spurrier is stunned to learn the Gamecocks had 390 yards of offense. "Felt like we had about 200 the way they stymied us."

Spurrier said the taunting call didn't matter because "we probably would have found a way to go backwards anyway."

On taunting play: Spurrier said Mitch told him he said something to a buddy on the UNC team and they flagged him.

Gamecocks prevail in Battle of the Carolinas http://scne.ws/C3HT1S

QuoteStar of the game: Senior Shon Carson was the third-string tailback entering the game but may be the starter now. Carson rushed four times for 75 yards in the second half, including a 48-yard touchdown run that put South Carolina up 17-13 with 12:45 left in the game.

Stat of the game: Five players took the snap from center for South Carolina (Starting quarterback Connor Mitch, backup quarterback Perry Orth, wide receiver Pharoh Cooper in addition to tailbacks Brandon Wilds and David Williams). If you count punter Sean Kelly, who rushed for 17 yards to convert a fake punt in the first quarter, it was six players...

Were there lessons to be learned?

AL.com sports ‏@aldotcomSports 10h10 hours ago

What can we learn from South Carolina 17, North Carolina 13? http://ow.ly/RM473

QuoteSouth Carolina appears unsettled at quarterback. Starter Connor Mitch ran for 44 yards on 10 carries, but completed just 9 of 22 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game after a hard hit in the fourth quarter. Kyle Orth ran the offense reasonably well after entering the game, but did not put any points on the board.

NEXT UP: South Carolina hosts Kentucky on Sept. 12 (6:30 p.m., SEC Network).

USC-UNC: Thumbs up, thumbs down http://scne.ws/C3KLSl

QuoteThumbs up

Shon Carson

Where did THAT come from? He had 16 percent of his career yardage on Thursday, and scored the go-ahead touchdown. As he put it, "The other guys were banged up. They needed me."

Thumbs down

Play-calling

Steve Spurrier admitted it. He had no business going for a fourth-and-1 with his backup quarterback when a field goal would have meant, at worst, a tie game on the next possession. Everything turned out OK, but that call ended a puzzling second half where the Gamecocks stayed away from the zone read that had gotten them back in the ballgame...

If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

woodrow hog call

I thought NC got way too cute with the play calling, if they put the bigger back in and just punch it in late, while draining the clock I don't see SC winning. Pretty ugly game for the most part.

Is NC using the Gus offense? Looked a lot like his stuff, to me.

Skai Moore's 'knack' for big plays saved USC http://www.thestate.com/sports/college/university-of-south-carolina/usc-football/article34102317.html ...

QuoteCarolina's first and last drives against South Carolina Thursday night ended in identical fashion — with USC linebacker Skai Moore picking off Tar Heels quarterback Marquise Williams in the end zone.

Moore's first pick came after UNC took seven plays to go from its own 36-yard line to the South Carolina 6-yard line. His second came with the Gamecocks clinging to a four-point lead, and it all but sealed the win for USC.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said afterward he wasn't surprised to see his MIKE linebacker come up with big plays in big situations.

"Skai can pick the ball off. He does it in practice all the time," Spurrier said. "As everybody knows, if you play cover two, that middle linebacker down the middle, he's got to cover a lot of range and (Moore) has a knack of watching the quarterback. Those were the plays that won the game. Skai Moore did it."
