Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan made another statement that seems to contradict his early-summer retirement that was scheduled to follow the 2015-16 season.

"There isn't any wishy washiness," Ryan said. "People can interpret it any way they want, but in the state of Wisconsin you have to file papers to retire. There have been no papers filed. I'm going to decide after the season exactly what I'm going to do."

UNLV alum Dave Rice out as Rebels coach amid winless league start

Rice, 47, went to the NCAA tournament in his first two seasons but did not make the postseason the past two. The move comes after the Rebels (9-7) lost five of six and started 0-3 in Mountain West play.

"Earlier today, I met with Dave Rice, and after discussing the direction of our season, we mutually agreed that it was time for a change," athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy said in a statement. "He will always be a cherished member of the Runnin' Rebel family, and we are grateful for all he has done for this program. However, being winless in conference play and losing five of the last six games is simply not good enough for Runnin' Rebel basketball."

UNLV assistant coach Todd Simon, in his third year on staff, will replace Rice on an interim basis.

One name already in the mix for the permanent job, per multiple sources, is former NBA coach Mike Brown...

It was money that got Dave Rice forced out late Sunday as head basketball coach at UNLV. Some of the program's most powerful donors had enough of the Rebels' apparent underachievement as a basketball program, and they wanted him gone. Not in March, after the season, when it is traditional to make a permanent decision about removing a head coach.

Now.

So it happened. Now.

It's a terrible decision because it accomplishes nothing, it solves no problems and it leads us all to wonder whether this particular athletic department — or this particular university, in the arena of intercollegiate athletics — is capable of making cogent decisions.

It's over.

For all practical purposes, the Josh Pastner era at the University of Memphis ended Sunday at FedExForum with a loss to an East Carolina team that hadn't won a road game or a conference game all year.

The end hasn't been officially confirmed or anything. Pastner hasn't been let go. The University of Memphis hasn't held a press conference. Athletic director Tom Bowen hasn't thanked Pastner for his service or proclaimed he's going to embark on a nationwide search for a new coach.

But all that is coming. It has to be, right?

It doesn't matter that Pastner is a rare and admirable human being.

It doesn't matter that Memphis will have to pay him $10.6 million to go away.

Memphis cannot continue to employ a basketball coach who has no credibility in the community and is driving away ticket-holders in droves. You know it, I know it, and I believe the university now knows it, too.

Indeed, I believe the university has known it for a good long time, well before Pastner lost his 10th home game in the last 14 months.

All you have to do is look around FedExForum to understand the state of things. All you have to do is see the empty seats...

Greg Gard isn't making this decision easy for Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez.

After Bo Ryan stepped down in December, Gard took over on an interim basis. Although the expectations were low after Wisconsin's lackluster start to the season, Gard's coaching task wasn't easy. Remember, this group lost the National Player of the Year in Frank Kaminsky, another first-rounder in Sam Dekker -- in addition to current NBA player Duje Dukan, and veterans Josh Gasser and Traevon Jackson.

Gard's first six games? He was 2-4, and there was no shot for him to get the permanent gig.

But it just took some time for the longtime Ryan assistant to figure things out. Since that six-game stretch, the Badgers have reeled off seven straight wins -- including victories against the top three teams in the Big Ten: Michigan State, Indiana and a huge road win in College Park against No. 2 Maryland on Saturday...

Pat Forde, college sports writer for Yahoo!, lists Louisville as the top job in college basketball on his "Potential Job Openings" list.

Rick Pitino's future has been the subject of great conjecture ever since October, when the escort scandal engulfed his program in scrutiny, controversy and an NCAA investigation. He's coaching as well as ever and still has the support of many in the community, but this situation could be difficult to endure for him and the administration. Pitino may well face a suspension for multiple games next season, and a coaching change may further mitigate further NCAA punishment – in addition to the self-imposed postseason ban, which blindsided Pitino earlier this month. After 15 seasons it might be time for a reset. How good is the job: Among the best in the country. No expenses spared, no better facilities. Who might get the call: Athletic director Tom Jurich's fall-back guy if Pitino did not come in 2001 was a little-known guy at Hofstra named Jay Wright. He's turned out OK. But that was before he became an institution in Philadelphia.

If you listen and read a lot of what's being said about Mark Fox and his program, one is left to think that every game Georgia plays these days is a referendum on whether he should be allowed to continue as the team's coach.

I heard a man shout loud enough for everyone around him to hear: "Greg McGarity's gonna have to fire Fox just like he did Mark Richt!"

I didn't engage the man, but I wanted to say back, "no, he's not!"

Because he's not.

But barring a wheels-off-the-wagon finish to the season — and maybe not even then — I suspect Fox's employment as Georgia's head coach will continue. As it should.

If you've observed Georgia basketball as long as I have — and I started watching closely when Hugh Durham was the coach — you realize that everything is relative when it comes to this program. And it's probably important about now to provide a little context.

The Bulldogs (14-10, 7-6 SEC) are in the midst of a pretty impressive run in their history. Did you realize that with two more conference wins this season, Georgia will have finished with a .500 or better record in SEC play for the fourth season in a row? Big deal, you say?

That, my friends, has never before been done in school history.

We're getting to the end of another season in the Mountain West and just like the last few, UNLV's only relevancy is that the conference tournament is played in their arena.

Once the offseason starts, Rebels' administrators have the taxing job of finding a new men's basketball coach after they (UNLV boosters, rather) fired Dave Rice in the middle of the season after starting 9-7 (0-3 MW).

There's no question Rice was a fantastic recruiter. The problem was he couldn't produce any results on the court. He was never a good on-court, situational coach despite being a former player.

And that's what UNLV needs in its next coach:

1. Rick Pitino, Louisville

Oddly enough, there's a reasonable chance this happens. Louisville is still reeling from Katina Powell's book Breaking Cardinal Rules, in which she alleges that she brought multiple prostitutes to Louisville's campus to entertain recruits at the direction of former assistant coach Andre McGee.

The big obstacle is his salary demands. Unless Pitino would be willing to take a substantial pay cut from his $4 million per year he makes from Louisville. For comparison, Dave Rice's base salary was $300,000 at UNLV...

2. Marvin Menzies, New Mexico State...

Martin, whose team opens the NCAA Tournament on Friday as the highest seed in school history, fired Hufnagel after receiving the report from the Office for the Prevention of Harassment. The investigation surrounding Hufnagel is part of the reason Martin — near the end of his second season in Berkeley — is still working under his original offer sheet and has yet to sign a formal contract with Cal, the source said.

Western Men's basketball coach Ray Harper has resigned from his position following the suspension of three Hilltopper guards after the outcome of a University Disciplinary Committee hearing on Wednesday night.

"Earlier today, I informed Todd Stewart that I was resigning as WKU head men's basketball coach," Harper said in a statement. "I feel this is in the best interests of the program; a program I care deeply about. It has been a true honor being a part of this historic program, as both a head coach and assistant coach. I want to thank my assistant coaches, our support staff and certainly our players for their efforts, dedication and sacrifices on behalf of me and our program. I also want to thank Gary Ransdell, Todd Stewart and our administrative staff for their support and dedication. WKU Athletics has an outstanding group of people, and there is no better place to work.

"Finally, I want to thank the Bowling Green community and the Hilltopper Nation for the tremendous support they provided my wife Shannon and I. We were proud to call WKU home, and I wish everyone all the best."

Harper did not respond to a request from the Daily News for further comment.

The players' suspension was not because of anything academic or NCAA-related in nature, a source told the Daily News on Thursday night.

Could Travis Ford be headed to Western Kentucky?

Could OSU be waiting for Ford to find a soft landing spot and let him resign on his own? And is that landing spot Western Kentucky?

Western Kentucky is a good job. A long-time mid-major hotbed. The Hilltoppers have good tradition. They had won at least 20 games three straight years, before an 18-16 record this season.

Western Kentucky is located in Bowling Green, Ky., 86 miles from Ford's hometown of Madisonville, Ky. And Ford remains a bluegrass icon, as the point guard on Rick Pitino's 1993 Final Four team.

It seems Ford would be a natural fit as Western Kentucky's coach. Ford is a good coach who worked hard. It just didn't work out at OSU. NCAA Tournament success was minimal, the crowd support dwindled and it was time to cut the cord. But there is no rancor from the Cowboy brass about Ford. They like him. They wish him well. They will work with him.

Plus, Ford getting a good job will help OSU's budget. OSU owes Ford $2.4 million for each of the next three years, minus whatever he makes coaching elsewhere. So if Western Kentucky can pay Ford $600,000, ...
