My dad has recently moved to south Arkansas to help my grandfather out. Being the avid hunter/fisherman he is he has put up one of those night camera things in the back yard. When I see him next weekend I will post some unbelievable pictures from about 20 feet our his back porch.

My oldest son got his Christmas presents early... a .270 and a fine buck.  I heard a shot at 7a.m. but he didn't follow instructions and contact me via walkie-talkie.  When I headed towards his stand at the agreed time of 9a.m. he was jumping up and down wanting to know where I'd been so long.

MB is that his first buck?

Boy, i can't wait till the day our son, then daughters, kill their first, i'll be one proud papa those days.....

that's a pretty good one tho..i bet you were proud.

8 point from this year. Had to get him quartered and on ice in a hurry cause if you'll look at the date, you'll notice something.....LSU tailgaitin in " :razorback:The Rock :razorback:" Luckily I got him real early. I was walking to my stand in the dark and all of a sudden I hear crashing through the woods coming straight at me. It was a deer that I had jumped but I obviously couldn't see it due to the dark so I sat down in the trail and I could hear another deer out in front of me. I waited about 15 minutes to the point where it was still dark but I could see to walk to my stand and I decided that's what I would do. I got in the stand about 10 minutes before the sun came up and put out an Tink's scent bomb and started grunting as soon as the sun came up. We set the stand up two years ago and I've killed 4 deer off it. Only one problem my dad shoots left handed and I'm a righty and HE set up the stand and every single deer has come up on my right. Both 8 points came from behind me on my right. I grunted this nice 8 point up and he came strolling by my stand at no more than 10 yards but I had no shot because I couldn't swing my gun around to that side so I had to wait for him to get out in front of me. I waited for him to turn his head and raised my gun and he must have sensed it because he started acting skiddish and stomping and took about 5 steps down the hill away from me. i didn't have a very good shot but I decided to take him anyway and shot him right in the back of the neck. Needless to say he didn't go far. Dropped right there. It was pretty exciting!

8 point from last year. This 8 was chasing the doe in the picture. I had stood up on my ladder stand because my butt was getting sore and tired and it was like 9:45 and I was about to call it a morning (I'm not very patient) and I hear something running through the woods and saw the doe. I immediately put the scope on her and was about to take the shot but I looked up and saw why she was running. I took a shot at him on the run and MISSED! Lucky for me they were stupid enough to stop to figure out what the hell that loud noise was and as soon as he did I dropped him. The doe never moved after the second shot so I shot her too. All 4 deer I have shot off that particular stand have dropped where I hit them. No tracking for me!

Dad's 10 point killed in Camden Arkansas with a .300 Mag. He got lucky. He came out to the trail to wait for my uncle to come pick him up on the 4 wheeler but my uncle was watching some deer so was late to pick dad up. Dad fell asleep on one side of the log. A doe came up and started to step over that very log and woke him up and they scared each other half to death. So dad sat up and had two more does come in on him and he put the biggest one in the scope and was about to harvest her when he saw this big boy come strolling in. I guess sometimes you just get lucky!

A good one don't anyway. They don't run dillos, opposoms, or bobcats either, or well they aren't supposed to. I have heard of coondogs being shot for running the three I listed.

Now my dad has told me of a dog that my Great Grandpa had. He said it was one of the best dogs in the area but that if it ever got on a trail of a Mountain Lion that it was over for the night. He said that they was hunting one night and the dog took off on a couger trail. My Grandpa told my dad that they might as well leave because they wouldn't ever catch up to him, so they put out some dogfood and went to the house. My Grandpa went back a couple of days later, the dog is usually back within 2 days, but the dog was still gone. He got to listening and could barely hear the dog off in the distance. Him and my dad followed his bark and finally found him halfway up a old dead hollowed out tree that was leaning at about a 30 degree angle. Turns out that the dog got after a couger and had chased it into this hollowed out tree. They smoked it out but between trying to hold onto the dog and the brush they couldn't get a shot at it. The dog was a few miles from where they lost it and was very weak, they don't think it had even had a drink since it got after the cat. I always found this as a interesting story about a coondog so I thought I would share it with you.

Congrat to Mrs Seahawk. My brother in law killed his first deer and he is in his 30's. None of his family hunted but he always wanted to, so he didn't hunt much til him and my sister got together. His was a nice 11 point, I will try and get my sister to email me some pics of it.

Sorry, just had to correct this for those who may be interested.  Fallow deer are native to Europe.  They were introduced to New Zealand just like every other big game species there.  The only land mammals native to New Zealand are bats.

Sorry, just had to correct this for those who may be interested.  Fallow deer are native to Europe.  They were introduced to New Zealand just like every other big game species there.  The only land mammals native to New Zealand are bats.

How do they taste?

Bats are like ringnecks and shovelers, put 'em in your gumbo and add lots of garlic... ;)

Here's the buck I got with my bow on opening morning of rifle season on Wedington WMA near Fayetteville. He is offically a 10 point, but could be called an 11 point if you count the forked brow tine. He green scores approx. 150 B&C and should easily make Pope & Young. The unique thing about him was he only had 1 toe on the right rear leg.

Every one seems suprised I took this big guy on public land. Guess I got lucky. I saw this deer 2 days before when I was looking for a place to put my stand on opening morning, jumping him from his bed. I was suprised to see him return to that same area.

I've had that reaction quite a bit. My cousin claims to have hunted that very ridge just a few days earlier and several times the last month without even seeing a deer. That morning a hot doe came through within 10 yards of my stand followed by this bruiser a few minutes later. Once this guy hit the ground, I had enough time to nock another arrow and sit back down, realizing another buck was following the same doe. I could have taken the small 6 point, but I let him walk on by and follow the doe, as both were headed toward my buddy. He ended up taking the doe when the buck wouldn't present him with a shot, despite repeated passes through his kill zone.
I wish I had brought something to capture Miss from both animals in, because she was hot to trot and he was in full rut. Ow well.

Fun story:
I bought a Montana Decoy.  I was disappointed with it out of the box, but decided to give it a whirl.

I put it out in a field upwind of a thicket.  Sprinkled some Tink's Doe in Heat on it.  Grunted.

A few minutes later a spike appeared staring at the decoy, then I heard a grunt.  Got the gun ready, and out walked a nice (for Arkansas) 8 point. He had his eyes glued on the decoy. I took aim and pulled the trigger.  It snapped.  I didn't have one in the chamber.

I pulled the gun back and hit the side of the metal deer stand with the gun, CLANG, then worked the lever action, CHINK CHINK.  Well, I had his attention.  I got the chest in my sites quickly, and let off a round.

We found very little blood, but he only made it about 50 yards.  I had shot a little low, but his heart was destroyed.

13.5" spread. G3's measured 7". 3.5" base.  The deer was about 180 lbs.  I am going to european mount him.

Well here we go.  I had one day to hunt this season and it was this past Tuesday.  The Air Force moved me to Oklahoma this year so this is my first ever hunt outside of Arkansas.  I met a man in town who said he'd take me whenever I wanted to go so I jumped on the opportunity.  All I have to say is... wow.  I saw more deer in one day than I have in multiple seasons combined in my Fordyce woods.  I saw 50+ deer with several 8 points a ton of spikes and a funky 7 point that I let walk because I was having so much fun I didn't want to end the day.  My friend saw 142 from atop a hill.

I sat on a 1000 acre lease up in far Northwest Oklahoma in a tripod overlooking a large wheat field.  It was a new experience because I had 900 yards straight ahead, and 200 yards each to the cuts on either side of me.  I showed up with my .30-30 and my friend suggested I take one of his rifles, I'm glad I did.  I was lined up on a very nice 8 point in the morning but he was sitting out at 220 yards (thanks to a laser range finder I was sent out with).  I wasn't used to taking those kinds of shots so I had to let him go.  I was hating myself as dusk came because I wished I had taken a shot on him.  Then at about 5 PM I had 7 doe in the field and a 4 pointer came out.  I decided to mess with him some before I left and use a grunt on him to try and see if I could get him to walk in for practice.  I grunted a few times and he stopped and actually took a step or two forward while staring right at me.  A nice doe in the middle of the field started dancing and prancing around every time I grunted so I did it a few more times.  Just then out of the corner of my eye I saw a streak moving in from the hills next to me.  I pulled up my binoculars and saw this 8 point come charging in straight at that doe.  He pulled up and stopped with his tail and ears straight up and staring at me.  I grunted again and he started running and hopped the fence into my field.  I got him in the scope and started making decisions.  He was 160 yards out and I said "I'm doing it."  I got myself ready and then the doe jumped and I saw his muscles clinch to move so I rushed myself and pulled the trigger.

I missed.

All the deer went sprinting and he went at a 30 degree angle away from me longways across the field.  I immediately ran the bolt and cycled a new round in and reacquired him.  I didn't think I hit him but wanted to get him again in case I just wounded him.  Right before he entered the cut he stopped one more time.  I calmed myself, lined the horizontal bar directly with his spine and squeezed.  He dropped immediately, made one kick, and laid to rest.  I lased him to see the distance and he was right at 230 yards.  Not bad for an offhand shot on my first long range kill (Go Air Force).  I gathered everything, kept an eye on him, and moved in.  He never made another move.  When I got to him I found a brow tine I hadn't seen making him a 9 point.  He weighed in at a hair under 140.  I know not impressive to many on here, but it's the largest deer I have ever harvested so I'm proud.  I pulled my light out and signaled my friend and he drove out to meet me.  I had never successfully grunted in a deer and didn't think it was possible.  It may never work again.  I also had never shot at a deer beyond 80 yards but have taken 100-200 yard shots on the range.  I had a blast and looks like I'll be laying my money down and campaigning with my friends for my shot at a lease next year.

Please excuse the blood, I don't know where it all came from because the meat was fine.  I know it's not classy/respectful but I wanted pictures.  He was shot straight through the spine on the middle of his back so I must have pulled back a little and the bullet didn't drop much.  I was told the rifle was sighted for 200 yards dead on.  I thought he was gutshot as I approached but he wasn't, must have just been the entry the bullet made.  I'm also glad I made the shot because he was clipped on his front elbow when I shot low, and I would have hated to leave a wounded deer.

Shakedown, were you on your own up there or on a guided hunt? I'm already saving up for next year, I want to go and see those kind of deer for myself, not that I don't believe you thats good proof youv'e got. I just want to know what it feels like to have a monster like that coming toward me on a stand, and bowhunting would the best way to harvest a trophy like that.
Good idea taking your camera to the stand with you also.

i am origanlly from kansas... moved in the 6th grade. my uncle has a ranch and row crop farm out there, (in pawnee county-one of the 3 best Units to hunt in Kansas) its about 5000 acres split by the arkansas river and a few creeks. all i do is bow hunt. it was awesome, the whole experience was. i have about 200 pictures. i took a friend with me and between the two of us we saw 5-6 P&Y deer and basically all but 2 of them were in range... i saw that real tall 8 3 days in a row and he walked right under my stand, 12 steps....it was amazing, i would post more pics but even one pic is too large to post and its a pain to shrink them...

I killed this one during Thanksgiving break.  It was the first big trophy I had taken in a few years.  It scored a 157 on the B&C scale before deductions and weighed 230 pounds.  Killed it early enough during the day to make it back and catch the entire LSU game.

I'm getting a European mount for the rack.

Also, I'm blurring my face for anonymity.

Thanks.  I took him in south Texas.  Probably around 50-75 miles from Mexico.

Also, a little more info on the deer.  They aged it at approximately 6 1/2 years old and it is a 7x5 12 point.  I can't remember the specifics, but the spread was hovering around the 20 inch range, maybe a slight bit lower.  The mass helped the score quite a bit.

i didnt score it myself... there is a guy that does it pretty regualrly that did it for me. it was 16 7/8 wide and the G2's were 9 7/8... i was pretty disappointed in the score myself... but not for long... i think the spread and main beam length is what caused the low score...

im getting flamed on another board for passing a 150" deer (in Kansas) so obviously i am not a very good judge!!!

You should just tell them you are hunting for a wall hanger. 150" just won't do anything for your trophy room. You need at least a 170". Your a hunter, gotta lie a little lol.

I'm not sure that's a decal!  I fear for the lad in the picture,  it seems that popcorn hog is about to launch an assault on him.  Slacker may still be involved in a death match with the evil villain!

Thank you SOS. BTW, that is on my 1997 Dodge pickup. It's dated, as are the decals on it. I've been thinking about scraping that thing off... It was given to me anyway.

Shot this boy at 6 this evening here in central Indiana.  Beautiful 8 point, weighed 186 field dressed which I estimate around 225 to 230 live weight.  I wasn't even gonna go out but decided to at the last minute.  Not bad for 45 minutes on the stand.

First deer with my 50 lb. Horsebow recurve I bought last fall.  Shot him with a 29" 3 Rivers cedar hunter arrow tipped with a 125 grain Magnus 2 blade.  I'm stoked!

This year I started hunting again with the first rifle I ever got.  It had been at least 20 years since I had hunted with this 30/30.  It felt good to use it again.

Congrats to that young lady!  And the 30-30 is the classic deer rifle.  Do you use the leverevolution ammo?

I like remington core-lokts for the 30/30.  I might be interested in the leverevolution ammo if I was using a scope.  I prefer a receiver or tang sight on a lever action and don't plan on shooting past 100 yards anyway.

Years ago I killed 13 consecutive whitetails with one shot using core lokts.  Then once took 15 shots to kill two of them.  It was all on me too, not sure what happened.

The processor charges by carcass weight, when I asked what carcass weight was he said those exact words, kinda funny at the time.

well, my 12 year old missed a very good deer right after daylight this morning, I would guess it was around a 130, but he stayed focused and got this one right before dark this afternoon. It helped ease some of the disappointment from this morning.

Got this one this morning.  I probably wouldn't have shot it but it was limping.  One of our youth hunters had shot at a buck last weekend and not found any blood.  I figured the limp was from that shot, so I shot it.  Turned out it wasn't.  It had a hoof that was split midways all the way to the bone.  The toes were pretty long, so it hadn't been using that foot for some time.  It was young and should be good eating.

Shot it with a ruger 77 RSI in .250-3000.  80gr TTSX caused massive damage, even on the entry side.

Broke protocol this morning and carried my muzzleloader. He came in behind me 5 minutes til 8 and I shot him on a trot as he was hoofin' across a narrow soybean patch (it doesn't qualify as a field, maybe 10 acres total, maybe.) Anyway, open sights at about 50-60 yards, just far enough out that I couldn't see that his right main beam tip and G-3 were broken off. Still, will provide good eats!

Step by step here it is
1. saw off head 2-3 inches behind the horn
2. use a razor utility knife cut down center of the face and start working the edges (I use pliers pull and cut) around the horns is the hardest part
3. get the hide down to the bottom jaw and pull the jaw off ( it has two bones that hook onto the top)
4. Boil the head for an hour, do not submerge the horns(discolors them) I do this out side in a turkey fryer it has a punget aroma
5. use a high pressure pressure washer and clean the skull (it gets messy) make sure you wash all the brain out it seems to be the hardest part.

Okay, you're just a lot faster than me with the skinning and I don't use a pressure washer.  Here's a tip my taxidermist buddy gave me: take a coathanger, cut a piece of it, bend a little pick tool on the end and dig the brain out before boiling, it comes out easier uncooked.  Also, here's a tip from me, put some dawn dishwashing liquid in your boil pot. Helps clean out brain remnants and cuts any other fat.

Here's the big 8 I did year before last. Went to Lowes and bought a red oak plank, traced the state of Indiana on it and cut it out with a jig saw and used the plank remnants to make a base so that it can sit on a shelf or end table.

I wouldn't recommend boiling any skull.  It will force fat into the bone even with the dawn in the water.  Most taxidermist will use either beetles or warm water maceration. Followed by a long degreasing time, a couple weeks on something like a deer. It may look fine now but in a couple of years you can deal with the bone yellowing as the fat leaches to the surface.

Mine is pretty yellow, probably partly due to that and the fact that I smoked heavily in the same room with the mount for 2 years. I don't mind though, it just gives it character to me.

If you ever have one you don't want to yellow, give me a shout. I can walk you through the practice. More time but less work.  Also a couple of taxidermist I've talked to will apply a couple layers of clearcoat.  I've done it with good results on some of my smaller skulls.  Will be trying it on a 7 and an 8 in the next couple of weeks.

I kind of like a little more natural color so I don't use the bleaching agent as long, I like a little more character as well. just gives it a little more of a bone color that I like.

I brushed this one down with some 40 volume salon peroxide and sprayed it with polyurethane. I imagine I'd be able to get some of the nicotine yellow off of it if I tried.

Hey, got another tip for you that I tried myself on this last buck I killed. Went and bought an air gun that has the slender long metal nozzle on it, cut a small slit just above the nose in the short hair along one side of the snout, inserted the nozzle and shot 150 psi air in there.  Blew the skin on his head up like a basketball and separated everything. Cut straight up the bridge of the nose and peeled him like an orange. Just used a Gerber EZ skinner (kind of a modified Ulu) to do what little cutting was necessary. Had him peeled out in about 5 minutes.

I'll post pics later if I can figure it out, but I did something I've never done before this weekend.

I sat in my customary opening morning stand.  And when I say stand, I mean a pink Academy lawn chair tucked into a bush.  It watches a road between to pine plantations on our place and when the bucks are moving, it is the best stand on the place as that they are almost guaranteed to move through there at some point during the day.  The shots are from about 80 out to about 225 and the deer don't stop.  They walk across so you have to decide quickly if you are going to shoot and then you have to do it.  You don't get much time to check them out.

Anyway, it was just light enough to see and I saw a buck slip across at about 90 yards.  I saw a rack and even in the dim light, you could tell it was legal.  It was a nice sized deer as well.  There wasn't very much light and he was almost across before I got on him.  I said "Hut" in a loud voice and stopped him.  His head was already in the plantation when he stopped to see what made that noise.  I shot him instantly and he laid down right there.  I went out to see him and I was a little disappointed.  He was an 8 point with about a 15 inch spread.  Nice, but no monster.

I walked back to my chair, looked at my watch and it was 6:30.  I decided to sit there a bit longer as that I wasn't ready to go in just to see what else might come along.  A bit later, a buck stepped out at about 175 yards. I could definitely see a nice rack on this one and I shot him as he stepped into the plantation and he dropped right there.  Once again, I was a bit disappointed.  He was an 8 point with a nice high rack at about 16 inches on the inside.  Not a monster.  I went back to my chair and it was 6:47.

Two deer in fifteen minutes.  I have to say, I actually felt a little guilty.  I probably wouldn't have shot the second one if I had realized he wasn't bigger than that but by the same token, if I had let him go, I would have sworn he was a monster.

Deer hunting is getting as bad as bass fishing.  Just like you feel guilty for keeping fish, I feel guilty now for shooting a buck that isn't six years old and maxed out on his antler growth.

My son-in-law and I bought 405 acres over in Mena with a Cabin on it this past year.  We turned it into a hunting lodge and then started building inroads throughout the property and erecting stands.  We didn't quite have it ready for this years hunt, but its good enough, but anyway, I was unable to go over there this weekend and spent time around my house.  I see deer in my yard everyday, as do all my neighbors, sometimes upwards of 12 or more during the middle of the day, does mostly, toward the evening, I've seen a few smaller bucks and had a 10 pointer with about a 16" spread that's been coming to my feeder but he's usually through around 3:00 A.M.  This morning at 7:45 I had this nice buck come for a visit to mess with the does around the feeder, never seen him before.  Now I'll see him permanently, he'll be mounted for sure.

By the way, this one is an 11 pointer, measures 20 1/2" inside, and weighed in at 203 pounds.

That's a great looking deer there, that's bigger than the one I killed I believe.

I shoot woodsman elite 3 blade broad heads in 125 gr. with 29" carbon arrows along with my bow being a 48 year old Browning recurve that my Dad passed on to me.

I still have a bit of work to do b4 ill head to the woods with a recurve.  But I do love my Compound.  BTW that buck you shot was awesome.  I wish the deer on are land had some funky antlers, but in 25 years every deer has been a main frame 8.

Anyone want to take a guess at where this deer was shot just by looking at the surroundings?  And yes, its in Arkansas.  I've only hunted deer in Arkansas.

Good blades. I shoot STOS 160 grain 2 blades on full length cedar shafts shield fletched. That combo has been absolutely lethal for me. The only deer I didn't eyewitness the tip over and death drop on was only because I couldn't see it through the foliage on the ditch bank. They usually don't make it 30 yards before they're done.

Probably the biggest deer I've killed. Wish it had more of a spread and longer tine length. Although the mass is just crazy, wish I would've looked at the teeth to figure out how old ole boy was

The bad thing on this one, instead of using my weatherby, I had bought a new browning 300 mag so used it. The deer came out opening evening, i did nothing fancy, just shot him. He donkey kicked and left. No blood. No hair. Its dark. Cant find anything. Left him overnight. Couldnt sleep. Got up at daylight and started walking the thicket. No blood. No hair no nothing. Im sick. Just walkin deer trails in thicket. Finally give up and find a trail to get back to my shooting lane and found him curled up under a bush with head tucked. Perfect shot but no blood. I only use my weatherby now. That would have never happened.

I had one like that; shot with my 270 and a ballistic tip.  Got to the spot, no blood, no hair and I knew that I had not missed.  It took me a while but eventually I walked right by him and he happened to move and it caught my attention.  He was buried in a brush pile

Also got this one.  First archery buck.  7 point with 16-1/2" inside spread.  He give me two tries.  First time was a 35 yard shot that my arrow hit a limb and shot right over him.  About 5 minutes later he showed back up at 17 yards and I smoked him.  Ran about 75 yards.  I was pretty excited since it was my first buck with my crossbow.  Shot my share of doe but never got the opportunity to take a buck when bow hunting.

I haven't been able to hunt the past 3 years because of a combination of health and other issues. I hope to do some bowhunting in the St. Francis river bottoms through the end of the season after I get moved back and settled in in NEA. I've got my physical health back to the point I can go.

I had a hard physical deterioration in the fall of 2014 that culminated in me waking up on December 1st of '14 barely able to move. I rebounded a little bit, but then over the ensuing 4 months began to suffer a worsening numbness and partial paralysis in my arms and legs. Had to have cervical spinal surgery and have been on the uptick ever since. But I have extreme osteoarthritis in my right knee and will have to have it replaced at some point. It's a bit rough at times, but it won't keep me from hunting.

Closest wild game to beef in my opinion.  Problem is it can be tough as mature bulls are at least 7yrs old, although the tenderloins were very good.  Some places have spike/fork hunts for 2yr olds that provides the best meat.
